Ch May 18, 1968 the U. S. Mission reported that drought conditions during<br />
the preceding 12 months had seriously affected ~iculturisl product ion.<br />
Rainfall records indicated the drought to be the worst in 25 years. The<br />
livestock industry was the hardest hit with pastures and grass lands almost<br />
bare, cattle dying and production of milk and animal protein substantially<br />
reduced. The drought created unprecedented demands for feed grains. Many<br />
families lost their source of food throw the after-affects of the prolonged<br />
drowt. Following contributions of f& to assist these families<br />
f'ran the World Food Program in August 1968, heavy rains occurred which<br />
washed away newly planted cmps so that the stricken fanm?rs faced another<br />
crop failure.<br />
ACTION TAKEN BY THE GOVE-<br />
OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLLC<br />
The GODR requested assistance from the World Food Program in a drought<br />
emerpncy program in July of 1968 and expansion of this enlergency assistance<br />
in February of 1969. The GODR agreed to take appropriate measures<br />
for adequate distribution procedures and to avoid duplicatiion with other<br />

?he World Food Program asked the U. S. Government to ~rovlde 1,950 tons of<br />
cornmeal following the first approval of WFP assistance in August of 1968<br />
and 4,320 tons of cornmeal following decision to expand thSs program in<br />
February of 1969. USAID/Santo lhmlngo concurred in proposed projects and<br />
approval was obtained fYvm AID/W for following P. L. 480 food contributions<br />
to the Dcsninican Republic through the World Food Program.
