Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 25, 2013
Jesus doesn't answer the question put to Him in
this Sunday’s Gospel. It profits us nothing to
speculate on how many will be saved. What we
need to know is what He tells us today - how to
enter into salvation and how urgent it is to strive
now, before the Master closes the door.
Jesus is "the narrow gate," the only way of
salvation, the path by which all must travel to enter
the kingdom of the Father.
In Jesus, God has come - as He promises in this
week’s First Reading - to gather nations of every
language, to reveal to them His glory.
Eating and drinking with them, teaching in their
streets, Jesus in the Gospel is slowly making His
way to Jerusalem. There, Isaiah's vision will be
fulfilled: On the holy mountain He will be lifted up,
will draw to Himself brethren from among all the
nations - to worship in the heavenly Jerusalem, to
glorify Him for His kindness, as we sing in
Sunday’s Psalm.
In God's plan, the kingdom was proclaimed first to
the Israelites and last to the Gentiles, who in the
Church have come from the earth's four corners to
make up the new people of God.
Many however will lose their place at the heavenly
table, Jesus warns. Refusing to accept His narrow
way they will weaken, render themselves unknown
to the Father.
We don't want to be numbered among those of
drooping hands and weak knees. So we must
strive for that narrow gate, a way of hardship and
suffering - the way of the beloved Son.
As this week’s Epistle reminds us, by our trials we
know we are truly God's sons and daughters. We
are being disciplined by our afflictions,
strengthened to walk that straight and narrow path
- that we may enter the gate, take our place at the
banquet of the righteous.

FROM THE PASTOR
College students are often
told by their professors that
just showing up for class is
not enough to pass a class.
It takes more than just
being around good teaching
and educated people to
learn well. Students must
read, study, understand
and discuss the material of
the course. It has to
become part of them if they
are to really get a good
education as well as good
grades.
Faith has the same kind of requirements. Many
people, including non-believers can tell you what
the Church teaches and what you must do to
practice faith. They can recite prayers and explain
sacraments, morality and the Bible. But that does
not make them Catholic. The words of the Gospel,
the effects of grace and the practice of faith must
sink in, transform and conform our lives to Christ.
It is the daily process of conversion, turning away
from sin and to the Lord.
If God gave grades for faith, what would your
grade be? To pass, you must not take faith for
granted, but work at it every day. We cannot just
hang around Church; we must be the Church, a
visible sign of the love of God present in the world.
We are given the tools, the knowledge and the
power to transform the world. Jesus is the teacher.
Let’s be His best students!

USHERS AND GREETERS

to get to know people at our church and grow together as
the Body of Christ. We need ushers and greeters. For

LECTORS
Lectors proclaim the Word of God through the first two
readings. They also make announcements before the
liturgy. We are in need of lectors. Please contact the
Parish office or Fr. Mirek.
EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist assist in sharing
the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ with the congregation
as well as in our local hospitals and nursing homes.

MUSIC MINISTRY
Music ministry provides support for the liturgy. Through
thoughtful musical choices and preparation, the music
ministry helps the congregation enter into fuller
participation in the liturgy. For more information please

director.
ALTAR SERVERS
The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest
in the celebration of the Mass. This is done through
specific actions and by setting an example to the
congregation by active participation in the liturgy. We are
blessed to have ten altar servers at St. Joseph - St.
Lazarus. Any child that has received First Holy
Communion can be an Altar Server. Please contact the
Parish office or Fr. Mirek for more information.
WHY CATHOLIC?
This program is a wonderful way to renew and expand
our understanding of our Catholic faith. Many of us are
Catholics, without really knowing why, except that we
were raised that way. Others are Catholics who have
fallen out of practice and are looking for a way to fill that
’empty’ space. In either way, “Why Catholic?” is an easy
path to begin the journey to explore and understand our

FUNDRISING COMMITTEE
The Committee plans and carries out many interesting
and enjoyable activities for the Parish. These activities
support the various ministries and deepen our sense of
