Page Four SENIORS The Seniors Picnic will be held on Monday, July 8, beginning at 12 noon in Lourdes Center. Tickets are $10 for members and $20 for non-members. The last date to purchase tickets will be on Tuesday, July 2. No tickets will be sold at the door. PARISH OFFICE The Parish Office will be closed on Thursday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS All are invited to attend our Knights of Columbus’ Installation of Officers on Sunday, July 7, immediately following the 11:30 a.m. Mass. Light refreshments will be served. Come out and support our Knights who are always ready and willing to serve our parish. HOLY NAME SOCIETY The next meeting of our Holy Name Society will take place next Saturday, July 6, at 9:15 a.m. in the Meeting Room of Lourdes Center. BAPTISMAL PREPARATION CLASS The next Baptismal Preparation Class will take place this Monday, July 1, at 8 p.m. in Lourdes Center. Baptismal donations and Godparent Eligibility Certificates may be presented at that time. A Godparent must have received the sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, must have been married in a Catholic Church or in a ceremony recognized by the Catholic Church. THE CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE: ADVANCE DIRECTIVES FOR HEALTH CARE FORM Documents which provide guidance when a person is no longer able to make health care decisions are called “advance directives”. It is recommended that those completing an advance directive also appoint a health care representative who is someone who is trusted and authorized to evaluate what the patient would want and to make those health care decisions. The Catechism of the Catholic Church provides clear guidance on end of life issues. The New Jersey Catholic Conference (NJCC) of Bishops has an Advance Directives for Health Care form which reflects the Catholic perspective. Copies are available by contacting the Respect Life Office at 732-5r62 -1990 ext. 1629 or 1543. A copy can also be downloaded from the diocesan website at: http://www.diometuchen.org/deptsministries/ respect-for-life/catholic-advance-directivesliving-wills/ or the NJCC website: www.njcathconf.com. These forms are also available in Spanish. A Catholic Guide to End-of-Life Decisions is a resource made available by the National Catholic Bioethics Center. This document provides a clear explanation of the Church’s teaching on end-of-life care. Kulandairaj Madalaimuthu (Fr. Raj) to our parish as our new Parochial Vicar. He comes to us from Our Lady of Victories Parish in Baptistown. He will be with us for the next year. Page Five STEWARDSHIP PRAYER FILL OUR HEARTS Dear Heavenly Father, We ask you to grant to us compassionate hearts; hearts rich with your love, embraced by your compassion. Grant us generous hearts: hearts that never count the cost; hearts that seek to serve and not be served. Grant us hearts that love peace: hearts that promote truth and justice, transform hatred and anger and seek unity and reconciliation. Grant us hearts of a steward: hearts that are filled with gratitude, eager to share, and long to give back to you. Grant us hearts filled with your Spirit: hearts open to conversion, filled with hope, and on fire with Your Word. We pray this in Jesus’ name. WHOLE COMMUNITY CATECHESIS The Gospel of Luke 9:51-62 Gospel Reflection Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem. He is preparing Himself to face suffering and death. He forgives the Samaritans who refuse to welcome Him, showing His disciples how to behave toward their enemies. He then responds to three different people who want to follow Him. Does He say, “Come with Me and all will be well?” Not at all. Jesus tells them right up front that the cost of becoming His disciples is high. That cost may include giving up home, family and means of income. Discussion Questions for the Gospel Plowing gets a field ready for planting. In Jesus’ time, a farmer plowed a field by following an ox on foot. The farmer used the reins in his hands to give signals to the ox. If the farmer looked back, he would, of course, move his body around. Then the reins would jiggle. The ox would think it was a “turn signal” from the reins. The ox would veer from the straight path and the farmer’s smooth straight row would be ruined. Jesus asks us to keep looking straight ahead as we follow Him. No looking back to check on how we’re doing. This takes trust. How do you show you trust Jesus to lead you “straight ahead?” When are you tempted to “look back” (perhaps at your sins and failings) or to look around in a different direction? Who or what helps you to keep trusting Jesus? How can you show that you are “fit” for the reign of God? Some followers of Jesus today still give up “home, family and means of income.” Do you know anyone who has? We usually think of those in religious vows, like priests, sisters and brothers. Some lay people also join together to follow Jesus as missionaries and helpers to the poor. Question of the Week When did you first decide to follow Jesus?
