We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to
“live the good life”. But Jesus calls us to a
different kind of freedom. St. Paul reminds us
that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one
another, share our gifts and promote God’s
work here on earth to glorify His name and not
honor ourselves.

2014 MASS BOOK
Our 2014 Mass Book will open on Friday, July
12. We once again ask that you please limit
your Mass requests to no more than three.
You may have more than one name for each
Mass requested. We ask that you have your
requests clearly printed along with your phone
number. Once the Mass Book has been
opened for at least three months, please feel
free to come in and arrange for additional
Masses. There is no limit to the number of
Blessed Mother Candles, Sanctuary Candles
and Wine and Hosts requests. (There are still
some openings for candles and Wine and
Hosts for 2013.) If you have any questions,
please call the Parish Office at 732-721-2772.
The donation for Masses is $10. The donation
for Blessed Mother Candles and Sanctuary
Candles is $20. The donation for one week’s
Wine and Hosts is $50.
SATURDAY MORNING MASSES
There will no Saturday morning Masses
through September. Those who had Saturday
morning Masses reserved have been notified of
the new dates. If you have any questions
regarding Saturday morning Mass Intentions,
please contact Mary at the Parish Office at 732

SUMMER ENVELOPES
We thank our parishioners who mail or deliver
your weekly envelopes to the parish office
while you are out-of-town on vacation. As
you know, our parish expenses and obligations
do not take a vacation when you do, so it is
very helpful to be able to rely on your
continued support even when you cannot
personally attend Mass here. You can also
donate on line: Parish Pay.com then type in
St. Bernadette’s, Parlin then follow direction
on the screen. Once again, we appreciate your
continued support of our parish.
CALENDAR MEETING
We remind all organization heads that the
annual Calendar Meeting will take place on
Wednesday, August 7, at 7 p.m. in O’Dea
Hall. Calendar information must be received
at the Parish Office no later than Monday, July
22, and must include dates and times for all
meetings, fundraising events, trips, dances, etc.
BINGO HELP NEEDED
Bingo is played on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. and
on Fridays at 12 noon. Help is needed at our
Tuesday night bingo in the kitchen and on the
floor selling specials. You do not have to
commit to being there every week. If you can
help, please arrive at O’Dea Hall by 6 p.m.
BIBLE SCHOOL
This year’s Community Vacation Bible School
will take place here at St. Bernadette’s
Monday, August 5, through Friday, August 9.
This year’s theme is “SonWest Roundup”.
Details will follow in future bulletins.
Registration forms can be found the doors of
the church or at the Parish Office. If you have
any questions or would like to volunteer,
please call Lois Ann Smith at 732-721-4596.
CRAFT MEETING
There will be a Craft Meeting for Community
Vacation Bible School on Monday, July 1, at
10 a.m. in Room 107 in Lourdes Center and
also on Tuesday, July 9, at 7 p.m. in the
Meeting Room in Lourdes Center. Please
come and help prepare crafts for this year’s
“SonWest Roundup”. If you have any
questions, please call Lois Ann Smith at 732-

SENIORS
The Seniors Picnic will be held on Monday,
July 8, beginning at 12 noon in Lourdes
Center. Tickets are $10 for members and $20
for non-members. The last date to purchase
tickets will be on Tuesday, July 2. No tickets
will be sold at the door. Vice President, Bob
Siebert, can be contacted at 732-727-0514 for
more details or to arrange for tickets.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS
All are invited to attend our Knights of
Columbus’ Installation of Officers on Sunday,
July 7, immediately following the 11:30 a.m.
Mass. Light refreshments will be served.
Come out and support our Knights who are
always ready and willing to serve our parish.
HOLY NAME SOCIETY
The next meeting of our Holy Name Society
will take place next Saturday, July 6, at 9:15
a.m. in the Meeting Room of Lourdes Center.
BAPTISMAL PREPARATION CLASS
The next Baptismal Preparation Class will take
place this Monday, July 1, at 8 p.m. in Lourdes
Center. Baptismal donations and Godparent
Eligibility Certificates may be presented at that
time. A Godparent must have received the
sacraments of Baptism, First Holy
Communion and Confirmation and, if married,
must have been married in a Catholic Church
or in a ceremony recognized by the Catholic
Church.

ADVANCE DIRECTIVES FOR
HEALTH CARE FORM
Documents which provide guidance when a
person is no longer able to make health care
decisions are called “advance directives”. It is
recommended that those completing an
advance directive also appoint a health care
representative who is someone who is trusted
and authorized to evaluate what the patient
would want and to make those health care
decisions. The Catechism of the Catholic
Church provides clear guidance on end of life
issues. The New Jersey Catholic Conference
(NJCC) of Bishops has an Advance Directives
for Health Care form which reflects the
Catholic perspective. Copies are available by

-1990 ext. 1629 or 1543. A copy can also be
downloaded from the diocesan website at:

resource made available by the National

Victories Parish in Baptistown. He will be

WHOLE COMMUNITY CATECHESIS
The Gospel of Luke 9:51-62
Gospel Reflection
Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem. He is
preparing Himself to face suffering and death.
He forgives the Samaritans who refuse to
welcome Him, showing His disciples how to
behave toward their enemies. He then
responds to three different people who want to
follow Him. Does He say, “Come with Me
and all will be well?” Not at all. Jesus tells
them right up front that the cost of becoming
His disciples is high. That cost may include
giving up home, family and means of income.
Discussion Questions for the Gospel
Plowing gets a field ready for planting. In
Jesus’ time, a farmer plowed a field by
following an ox on foot. The farmer used the
reins in his hands to give signals to the ox. If
the farmer looked back, he would, of course,
move his body around. Then the reins would
jiggle. The ox would think it was a “turn
signal” from the reins. The ox would veer
from the straight path and the farmer’s smooth
straight row would be ruined. Jesus asks us to
keep looking straight ahead as we follow Him.
No looking back to check on how we’re doing.
This takes trust. How do you show you trust
Jesus to lead you “straight ahead?” When are
you tempted to “look back” (perhaps at your
sins and failings) or to look around in a
different direction? Who or what helps you to
keep trusting Jesus? How can you show that
you are “fit” for the reign of God? Some
followers of Jesus today still give up “home,
family and means of income.” Do you know
anyone who has? We usually think of those in
religious vows, like priests, sisters and
brothers. Some lay people also join together to
follow Jesus as missionaries and helpers to the
poor.
