.Vítam<strong>in</strong> A deficiency, a prevalent nutritional problem <strong>in</strong> many develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

countries (McLaren, 1965 ; sommer, À., 1982) occurs <strong>in</strong> conjunction<br />

with Prote<strong>in</strong>-Energy Malnutrition (,:etti ffe, 1 966 ) ; that is,<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased prevalence <strong>of</strong> PEM could usually be followed by <strong>in</strong>creased prevalence<br />

<strong>of</strong> Vitam<strong>in</strong> À deficiency. This is because, <strong>in</strong>sufficient Ret<strong>in</strong>ol<br />

B<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g prote<strong>in</strong> (Serum Vitam<strong>in</strong> A b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g prote<strong>in</strong>) is biosyn<strong>the</strong>sized <strong>in</strong><br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce ret<strong>in</strong>ol-b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g prote<strong>in</strong> is <strong>the</strong> means <strong>of</strong> transport <strong>of</strong><br />

ret<strong>in</strong>ol from <strong>the</strong> liver to <strong>the</strong> blood, <strong>the</strong> blood ret<strong>in</strong>ol tevel will consequently<br />

Night-br<strong>in</strong>dness or poor dark adaptation, is <strong>the</strong> primary sign <strong>of</strong> vitam<strong>in</strong><br />

A deficiency.<br />

Hypovitam<strong>in</strong>osis A (vitam<strong>in</strong> A deficiency) is a highly prevalent nutritional<br />

problem <strong>in</strong> pre-school and school age children. Identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

children wilh one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest form <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deficiency (poor dark<br />

adaptation) could help to imple<strong>ment</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terventions and hence limit <strong>the</strong><br />

progress <strong>of</strong> Vitam<strong>in</strong> a deficiency disease. However, <strong>the</strong>re is no suitable<br />

and applicable method <strong>of</strong> screen<strong>in</strong>g for early hypovitam<strong>in</strong>osis A <strong>in</strong> children,<br />

Part I <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis describes <strong>the</strong> relationship found <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong><br />

socio-economic and health variables to prote<strong>in</strong>-energy status <strong>in</strong> a<br />

(nutritional status) was assessed us<strong>in</strong>g anthropometric <strong>in</strong>dicalors such<br />

as l'[eight-for-Age, Height-for-Àge, and [.teight-for-Height. part II <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis describes <strong>the</strong> develop<strong>ment</strong> <strong>of</strong> a simple method <strong>of</strong> measur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dark adaptation function and its use to measure dark adapLation <strong>in</strong> children,<br />
