REVIEW OF LITERATURE<br />

8.1 BIOCHEMTCÀL ÀND PHYSIOIOGICAt BÀSIS OF DÀRK ADÀPTÀTION TESTING<br />

The ret<strong>in</strong>a <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eye conta<strong>in</strong>s a number <strong>of</strong> specialized cells known as<br />

rods and cones. The rods are specialized for scotopic vision (night<br />

time vision), and <strong>the</strong> cones for photopic (day light) vision. Both rods<br />

and cones conta<strong>in</strong> photosensitive chemicals, which assist <strong>in</strong> scotopic and<br />

photopic vision, respectively. The photosensitive chemical <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rods<br />

is known as rhodops<strong>in</strong>. Scotopic vision (dark adaptation) is dependent<br />

on <strong>the</strong> concentration <strong>of</strong> rhodops<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> reL<strong>in</strong>a. Low rhodops<strong>in</strong> concentration<br />

results <strong>in</strong> night bl<strong>in</strong>dness (poor dark adaptation). This is<br />

because <strong>the</strong> sensitivity <strong>of</strong> Lhe rods to light can be altered tremendously<br />

by only sJ.ight changes <strong>in</strong> rhodops<strong>in</strong> level (Guyton , 1976).<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g photopic vision, if <strong>the</strong> ret<strong>in</strong>a rema<strong>in</strong>s exposed to <strong>in</strong>tense<br />

light for a long time, most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stored rhodops<strong>in</strong> r+ill be converted<br />

<strong>in</strong>Lo ret<strong>in</strong>ene and evenLually, <strong>in</strong>to ret<strong>in</strong>ol (rigure 6). Therefore, <strong>the</strong><br />

concenLraLion <strong>of</strong> rhodops<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rods decreases greatly. This condition<br />

is also true <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cones <strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong> photosensitive chemical <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> cones decreases dur<strong>in</strong>g dark-adaptation. The reconversion <strong>of</strong> ret<strong>in</strong>ol<br />

<strong>in</strong>to ret<strong>in</strong>ene and <strong>the</strong>n to rhodops<strong>in</strong> is a slow process and <strong>the</strong> sensitivity<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rel<strong>in</strong>a lo light is reduced for a period <strong>of</strong> time.<br />
