3,2 METHODS<br />
3.2.1 Data collecLion<br />
weights and heights <strong>of</strong> each child under 5 years <strong>of</strong> age were collected<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r with age and sex. Data on health and socio-economic status <strong>of</strong><br />
respective households were collected us<strong>in</strong>g a household questionnaire.<br />
The questionnaire was completed by enumerators through personal <strong>in</strong>terview<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> home with <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r or head <strong>of</strong> household. The household<br />
questionnaire r+hich <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>the</strong> survey variables is presented <strong>in</strong><br />

weight <strong>of</strong> each child !,as measured us<strong>in</strong>g salter scales e5 x 0.1 Kg)<br />
and was recorded to <strong>the</strong> nearest 100 g. The scales were checked aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
a'10 Kg weight twice daily. Stand<strong>in</strong>g height <strong>of</strong> children greater than 2<br />
years <strong>of</strong> age was measured us<strong>in</strong>g a vertical wooden rod with a graduated<br />
tape attached to it. Children between <strong>the</strong> ages <strong>of</strong> 2 and 5 years stood<br />
bare-foot on a flat surface with heels, buttocks and back <strong>of</strong> head touch<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> vertical rod. With <strong>the</strong> head errect and eyes directed horizontally,<br />
a wooden bar, ât right angle with <strong>the</strong> vertical rod, was lowered<br />
flatten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hair until a firm contact with <strong>the</strong> crown <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head was<br />
reached. Measure<strong>ment</strong> was recorded to <strong>the</strong> nearest centimeter. <strong>in</strong> children<br />
less than two years <strong>of</strong> age , length was measured us<strong>in</strong>g a locally<br />
made wooden <strong>in</strong>fantometer. The <strong>in</strong>fant was placed horizontally on <strong>the</strong><br />
measur<strong>in</strong>g board and <strong>the</strong> head was held <strong>in</strong> such a vray lhat it contacted<br />
<strong>the</strong> fixed portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> measur<strong>in</strong>g board. Both knees r.iere held straight<br />
