1 DESIGN<br />

3.1.1 Sample selection and data collecLion<br />

À representative sample <strong>of</strong> households was selected from rural population<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sidama awraja, which is organized <strong>in</strong>to Farmers Àssociations<br />

(r¡s). A three stage stratified sampl<strong>in</strong>g technique was used to obta<strong>in</strong> a<br />

representative sample. For <strong>the</strong> first stage, 19 sub-strata were used ,<br />

which were identified by adm<strong>in</strong>istrative area and by ecological zones.<br />

Sidama Àwraja had 7 woredas and 3 ecological zones. The latter was<br />

identified by artitude and production <strong>of</strong> staple crops. The highrand<br />

zone vlas characLerized by crops such as barley and enset(false-banana),<br />

lhe middre-land by c<strong>of</strong>fee, teff, and pulses, and <strong>the</strong> lowland by sorghum,<br />

maize, and teff.<br />

The respective altitudes were: above 2000 m, between<br />

500 and 2000 m, and less than 500 m. In sidama Awraja, 5 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> woredas<br />

represent all <strong>the</strong> lhree ecological-zones ( 1 S sub-strata ) ,<br />

and <strong>the</strong><br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 2 represent 2 ecological-zones each (4 sub strata). For <strong>the</strong><br />

second stager Farmers Associations were randonly selected from each <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> 19 sub-strata proportionally based on <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> households <strong>in</strong><br />

each stratum. One hundred Farmers' Àssociations were sampled from a<br />

total <strong>of</strong>.492. For <strong>the</strong> Lhird stage,30 households r+ith children under 5<br />

years <strong>of</strong> age were randomly selected fron each Farmers'Àssociation (f¡).<br />

From each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> selected FÀ, 30 households were surveyed cover<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

total <strong>of</strong> 3000 households out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> esLimafed totat <strong>of</strong> 209,000. The<br />
