2,2.1 Relat ionship <strong>of</strong> Economic Stand<strong>in</strong>q and Nutritional Status<br />

Income is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> factors that could affect nutritional status <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals. Income directly <strong>in</strong>fluences <strong>the</strong> food purchas<strong>in</strong>g capacity <strong>of</strong><br />

a family and hence, <strong>the</strong> quantity and quality <strong>of</strong> food available for consumption<br />

(newaIt, 1983). Dewalt (1983) studied <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> economic<br />

status <strong>of</strong> households on purchased food and <strong>the</strong> quality and quantity <strong>of</strong><br />

food consumed (food use) <strong>in</strong> a rural Mazehua Indian population <strong>in</strong> Mexico.<br />
