2.1 NUTRITIONAL STÀTUS ASSESSMENT<br />

Nutritional status assess<strong>ment</strong> is a comprehensive process <strong>of</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals and population groups at nutritional risk and <strong>of</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

imple<strong>ment</strong><strong>in</strong>g and evaluat<strong>in</strong>g a course <strong>of</strong> action (simlo et aI.,<br />

1980). Nutritional status assess<strong>ment</strong> could be carried out by us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

anthropometric techniques, cl<strong>in</strong>ical exam<strong>in</strong>ation, dietary methodologies,<br />

and laboratory (biochemical) methods. Ànthropometric techniques <strong>of</strong><br />

nutritional status assess<strong>ment</strong> <strong>in</strong>volve <strong>the</strong> measure<strong>ment</strong> <strong>of</strong> weight, height,<br />

head circumference, mid-upper arm circumference and triceps sk<strong>in</strong>fold<br />

thickness (Robb<strong>in</strong>s and Trowbridge, '1984). Ànthropometric techniques are<br />

easy to use, <strong>in</strong>expensive, and are not time consum<strong>in</strong>g.They are frequently<br />

used to assess nutritional status under field conditions. Nutritional<br />

status assessnent us<strong>in</strong>g cl<strong>in</strong>ical (physical) exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong>volves identify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicator changes on external parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body, such as, hair,<br />

face, eyes, 1ips, tongue, gums and sk<strong>in</strong> (Owen, 1984). This melhod<br />

requires a well tra<strong>in</strong>ed pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>in</strong> order to identify <strong>the</strong> various<br />

signs and symptoms <strong>of</strong> PEM and could be time consum<strong>in</strong>g. Dietary meLhodologies<br />

<strong>of</strong> nutritional status assessmenl <strong>in</strong>clude twenly-four hour<br />

recalr, food frequencies, food records and food history (wright and<br />

Guthrie, 1984). Dietary methodologies are not expensive and could be<br />

used under field conditions.They are, however, time consum<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
