As expected, the correlations between grade index and back fat thickness measurements v/eïe highly negative which agreed r¡ith the basic principle of the Canadian market hog index system. The relationships between grade index and percent ham rveight, ham surface area and percent predicted yield r¡/ere positive. The carcasses with lower shoulder or loin fat thickness r¿ill have higheï percent ham weight. Ham surface area !)as negatively correlated i^rith three back fat thickness measurements and percent ham weighr, but was highly posÍtively correlated with percent predícted yield. The negative association between age to market weight and the three back fat measureinents indicated that faster groi+ing pigs were somer,¡hat fatter. This finding corresponds to the result described earlier where faster growing pigs in group A had higher back fat measltLements and ¡^rere lower in carcass grade index in conseqrlence. The positive correlatíons betv¡een age to market rveight and h:m surface area and percent predicted yield implied that pígs requiring the longer time to reach market weight would have larger hem surface area and higher percent predicted yíeld in carcasses.
