40 IV. Genetic correlations The genetic correlations among fíve reproductive traits calculated from sire conponents of covarianee are given ín Table 14. The correlation coeffícienEs of total number born with nuuber born ali-ve and number weaned; of number born alive i+ith number weaned, average bírth weight and average wealing weight, of number weaned with average birth weight are greater than unity. A favorable positíve genetic correlation betr¿een total number born and average pig weight at birth and at weaníng were found.. The result is in agreement with the reports from young et al. (1978). The contradictory result betr,¡een genetic and phenotypic correlation on these traits could be due to high negative enivronmental covariance components (Appendix rr). The high negative environmental covariance components overcome genetic covarÍance components and result in negative total covariance conponents. The competition for maternal nutrients could be the reason for thís unfavorable relationship.
