Phenotypic correlations Phenotypic correlations among five reproductive traits are presented in Table 14. The correlatíon coefficients among three litter síze traits rüere positive and high and generally agreed with Teports from other workers. The high positive correlatíons among the litter size traits indicate that the dams with larger litter would also have larger litter síze at weaning. síze at birth The correlatíon coeffícíent between average birth weighË and average weaning weight was 0 " 35 which r¡as lor¿er than the report f rom Young et al. (1978) at 0.56 but was close to the value reported from Fahrny and Bernard (L972) at 0.42. The relationship betvreen lirter sLze (total number born, number born alive ald number weaned) and average pig weight (aË birth and aÈ weaning) was negative. This is in agreement with the reports fron f'ahmy and Bernaxd (L972) and Young et al. (f978). Pigs from smaller litters tend to have heavy individual body weights at birth and at weaning. Fahny and Bernard (L972) suggesred that the negative relationship between litter size and individual píg weight is probably due to differences among litters of varying síze in competition for maternal nutrients.
