On a cool September
afternoon, members of
the Powhatan Soccer
Association’s Fury U17
Boys team met at
Hensley Park in Chesterfield
to participate in
a special team outing
working with Richmond
area’s TOPSoccer
program, which is
designed to enrich the
lives of boys and girls
with special needs
through soccer.
Assistant Coach
Aaron Humphreys
stated, “I have a strong
passion for soccer and
for giving back. I want
to bring more to this
team, something more
than just soccer.
To me, coaching isn’t
just about teaching
soccer. It’s about having
the incredible opportunity
to help guide and
influence kids, both on
and off the field. God
has blessed us all with
this opportunity and I
want to make the most
out of it.”
Team parents, Aaron
and Donna Puryear,
organized the boys’
participation as “Buddies”
with TOPSoccer.
Fourteen of the team’s
players participated in
this fun-filled, happy
event.
Whether doing shots
on goals, scooting
through cones, or
playing games like
“duck-duck-goose,” the
boys showed great
enjoyment and energy
with their participants.
They had so much fun
that they plan to return
in early October for
another TOPSoccer
event.
Powhatan 4-H Shooting Club
competes at statewide event
Contributed Report
With more than 290
youth from twenty-five
4-H clubs throughout the
Commonwealth, the
local club wasn’t sure
how they would fare at
the 2011 State 4-H Shoot
this month. This was a
record number of youth
to participate in the
annual 4-H shooting education
event – up 33
from last year.
However, all doubts
were set aside as the
ribbons and winning
teams were announced.
Powhatan 4-H club
leader Frankie Barham
said, “This may have
been the best performance
by this team in 18
years.” Barham has been
taking Powhatan youth
to this competition for
close to 20 years, but
said they really excelled
this season.
Twenty-six young
people attended the event
representing Powhatan’s
4-H shooting education
club. The competition
took place at Holiday
Lake 4-H Center in
Appomattox, VA during
the weekend of Sept. 9-
11. For many of the local
club members, this was
the first time to compete
in a state-wide shooting
event. Local club members
came home with
ribbons from every event
they participated. In
particular, Barham said,
“The girls on the team
really stepped up their
game.”
As in past years, the
local club members
brought home numerous
The 4-H Shooting
Education program uses
shooting sports as a
vehicle to help young
people ages 9 to 19
develop life skills such
as discipline, responsibility
and leadership.
Through the club, youth
also learn firearm safety,
basic marksmanship
fundamentals and
wildlife identification.
Each year, the Powhatan
4-H Shooting Club
sponsors a hunter safety
course along with the
Virginia Department of
Game and Inland Fisheries
for local residents. In
August, more than 75
area sports enthusiasts
took the course in
Powhatan.
The Powhatan 4-H
Shooting Club is grateful
for the financial support
received from the
National Rifle Association,
Altria Group and
Dominion Electric this
past year.
