Dana Byron Hoffer, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Hoffer of 1067 Anita, was taken to St. John Hospital by Woods police ambulance on Sautrday, June 15, suffering from back and head injuries, received when he was struck by an automobile in front of his home. According to a witness, Dana, while playing with two other children, ran into the street and was struck by a car driven by Diane Carol Larson of 34 Putnam. The youngster was knock. ed forward, and hit again with the left front wheel and was pushed against the pavement. The boy and car carne to rest at the north curb. The officers said they gave chase, and that they paced the car, driven by Atkins, at 70 miles an hour, and witnessed the youth driving to the extreme left of the road, in an area where "No Passing Zone" signs were posted. Atkins was stopped at Morn. ingside and Vernier and asked for his operator's license and car registration. The officers said they detected an odor of alcohol on the youth's breath and informed him that he was under arrest for reckless driving, which later was .changed to driving while under the in- (luen('~ of laquor. At the station, the young man failed the breathalyzer test, and was beld until he posted $100 bond, pending a court date. AIter posting of the bond, he was released to his parents. Thurber, president of a Detroit Public relations firm, and a Grosse Pointe citizen for more than 40 years, was chosen by a vote of nearly two to one over his nearest opponent, as a trustee of Wayne County Community College, District 1, at the June 10 school election. Thurber who lives at 794 Neff road, is a graduate of Harvard University. He served for six years as a regent of the Uni. versity of Michigan, and two years on the Michigan State Board of Education. Currently he is a member of the Overseers' Committee on Harvard College, and the Michi. gan Citizens Advisory Committee for Higher Education. Thurber received 7,432,votes. Runner.up was Charles S. Davis, with 3,862 votes, and third was James R. Haley, with 1,064. College District 1 is composed of part of Detroit's east side, the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods.
