Mar. 12: Speaking at the Myanma Economic Bank (Head Office),<br />
Deputy Minister for Planning & Finance Brig-Gen. Win Tin said changes<br />
in banking were being made "to do away with unnecessary steps...so as<br />
to expedite the banking service.... He pointed out that there still<br />
exist service personnel who violate rules and directives of the<br />
upper-level departments and are seeking their own benefits by abusing<br />
the rights. He said owing to these corrupt personnel, there has been<br />
lack of confidence on the part of public in the banking service....<br />
Drastic action will be taken against those who are engaged in corrupt<br />
practices, self-seeking and bribery. He declared that to be able to<br />
adopt banking systems of international levels and to acquire<br />
necessary know-how, arrangements have been made to seek foreign aid<br />
as well as [sic] service personnel are sent on study tours in the<br />
country and as delegations and trainees to foreign countries." (WPD<br />

AIDS<br />
Mar. 3: A national level meeting was held to discuss<br />
communicable disease control with especial reference to malaria and<br />
AIDS along the border of Myanmar and Thailand. Dr. Teera Ramasoota<br />
led a 7-member delegation from Thailand and gave an opening speech,<br />
as did Director-General of Health Dr. Maung Kyaw. The meeting will<br />

Blood Donations Needed<br />
Mar. 5: There is "urgent need for blood at the Yangon General<br />
Hospital and other hospitals in Yangon for surgical operations," and<br />
