produced by the ovula<strong>to</strong>ry follicle can <strong>in</strong>fluence oestrous <strong>expression</strong>. Lopes<br />

et al., (2007) concluded that larger pre-ovula<strong>to</strong>ry follicles had greater<br />

oestradiol concentrations <strong>and</strong> were associated with pregnancy. Therefore<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased activity at <strong>oestrus</strong> could be associated with <strong>in</strong>creased oestradiol<br />

concentrations <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>creased probability <strong>of</strong> conception.<br />

From a management po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view, greater activity at <strong>oestrus</strong> can <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

the probability <strong>of</strong> pregnancy because oestrous <strong>detection</strong> is more likely <strong>and</strong><br />

the tim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> AI relative <strong>to</strong> ovulation will be more precise. However a larger<br />

data set is needed <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> draw mean<strong>in</strong>gful conclusions about <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

oestrous <strong>expression</strong> <strong>and</strong> the probability <strong>of</strong> conception from these results.<br />

2.5 CONCLUSION<br />

In conclusion, important fac<strong>to</strong>rs affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>expression</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>oestrus</strong> have been<br />

identified <strong>in</strong> this study. Parity, oestrous number post partum <strong>and</strong> milk yield<br />

were <strong>in</strong>versely related <strong>to</strong> the activity <strong>in</strong>crease at <strong>oestrus</strong>. Time <strong>of</strong> year <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>oestrus</strong> also <strong>in</strong>fluenced the activity <strong>in</strong>crease possibly related <strong>to</strong> pho<strong>to</strong>period<br />

or day length. These results have largely confirmed the results <strong>of</strong> other<br />

studies <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> fac<strong>to</strong>rs affect<strong>in</strong>g oestrous <strong>expression</strong>. Here<strong>in</strong> they largely agree<br />

with the general consensus <strong>of</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ion on fac<strong>to</strong>rs that affect oestrous<br />

<strong>expression</strong>, although few studies <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the <strong>expression</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>oestrus</strong> have been<br />

carried out us<strong>in</strong>g activity moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g, highlight<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>novel</strong>ty <strong>of</strong> this study.<br />

Therefore cow fac<strong>to</strong>rs have been identified that can affect oestrous<br />

<strong>expression</strong>. Further work is required <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigate variation <strong>in</strong> oestrous<br />

<strong>expression</strong>, between <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>cows</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigate if there is genetic<br />

variation <strong>in</strong> the activity <strong>in</strong>crease at <strong>oestrus</strong>.<br />
