4. OBJECTIVES<br />
4.1.1. General Objective<br />
To assess the efficacy of albendazole currently in use against soil-transmitted helminths among<br />
school children in Shesha Kekele, Wondo Genet, southern Ethiopia<br />
4.1.2. Specific Objectives<br />
• To determine the cure and egg reduction rates of albendazole against soil-transmitted<br />
helminths<br />
• To assess the side effects albendazole in the treatment of soil transmitted helminth infections<br />
• To determine prevalence and intensity of STHs among school children in the study school.<br />
5. MATERIALS AND METHODS<br />
5.1. Study Area<br />
The study was carried out in Wondo Genet, southern Ethiopia. Wondo Genet is a district located<br />
some 270 km south of <strong>Addis</strong> <strong>Ababa</strong> at an altitude of about 1800 m above sea level. According to<br />
the 2005.E.C censuses, the number of inhabitant was estimated at 5,792 (2,857 males and 2,935<br />
females). Majority of the inhabitants of Wondo-Genet belong to the Sidama ethnic group who<br />
chiefly earn their living as farmers practicing settled mixed agriculture. Enset and maize are the<br />
principal food crops produced while sugar cane and chat (Catha edulis) are the principal cash<br />
crops of the area. Generally, agriculture, government employee and small scale trading are<br />
means by which the local people earn their living. According to Erko and Medhin (2003),<br />
hookworm, Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura are the three most prevalent intestinal<br />
helminths in the area.<br />
