Officer, nor to absent themselves for any part <strong>of</strong> the day without first<br />

telling the Superintendent.<br />

The Regulations concluded with the following injunction:<br />

It must be clearly understood by Medical Officers in the<br />

service that the performance <strong>of</strong> their public duty is invariably<br />

to be considered as the primary obj ect and whi le they are not<br />

precluded from affording their pr<strong>of</strong>essional aid to the<br />

inhabitants in their neighbourhood who may wish to avail<br />

themselves there<strong>of</strong>, yet this latitude <strong>of</strong> private practice is<br />

not to be allowed to occasion the slightest interference <strong>of</strong> any<br />

nature, with their pr<strong>of</strong>essional duties , which they must be in<br />

constant readiness to perform.<br />
