and H.C. Dqrling Commissary <strong>of</strong> Accounts, and established on May 7, 1838,<br />

found that :<br />

.... all persons employed in that (the Convict Service) with<br />

their wives and families are entitled to medical aid gratis<br />

from the Medical Officers on the convict establishment and to<br />

medicines from them out <strong>of</strong> those supplied for the convict branch<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Medical Department . Some indulgence should be applied to<br />

those employed in the Colonial Service with their wives ·and<br />

families but not at the expense <strong>of</strong> the Convict Funds . 2 0<br />

Such a decision, <strong>of</strong> course, was relevant to Hall, both when struggling to<br />

earn a living as a private practitioner in Brighton, and later in Bothwell<br />

when striving to cope with his numerous duties as a District As sistant<br />

Surgeon on a small salary .<br />
