On April 24 a Mr Crook , a newly arrived single<br />

man from London, was appointed to Spriṇg Bay and Hall was directed to<br />

commence duty at Bothwell on May 1, 1839, as District Assistant Surgeon<br />

at the rate <strong>of</strong> £100. 7. 6 per year, plus 2/6 foage allowance per week.10<br />

Hall thereby became one <strong>of</strong> thirteen Medical Officers employed by the<br />

Convict Department ;<br />

R. Officer; Assistant Srgeons E.S.P. Bedford, W. Dermer , C.G. Casey, and<br />

I. McDowell, all stationed in Hobart Town; and District Assistant Surgeons<br />

I.F. Sharland , F.G. Park , C.F. Storey, T. Creighton, H. Thomas, M. Walsh<br />

and K. McLeay. Their salaries ranged from Colonial Surgeon 31 . 17. 6<br />

to £278. 2. 6; £182 . 10. 0; £1 62. 17. 6; £136 . 17 . 6 and £100. 7. 6<br />

according to their qualifications , experience an good fortune.<br />

with six foot paling in the most substantial manner . The garden<br />

<strong>of</strong> / 4 <strong>of</strong> an acre has been made on the most scientific principle,<br />

hav1 . ng been trenched three foot deep etc . and is well stocked with<br />

choice fruit trees, shrubs, flowers etc. To a respectab le tenant<br />

the rent will be moderate but security wi ll be required .<br />
