CHAPTER 1<br />

ARRIVAL IN HOBART TOWN<br />

In 1800 Richard Hall, _aged twenty-nine, the son <strong>of</strong> John Hall <strong>of</strong><br />

Coppy House, Yorkshire, an grandson <strong>of</strong> Henry Hall <strong>of</strong> Leventhorpe Hall,<br />

Yorkshire, settled in Liverpool as a merchant .<br />

He lived at Carnavon Hall,<br />

Lancashire, until his death on September 25, 1825 , at Westby near Kirkham .<br />

He and his \'life, Elizabeth S\.,rarbreck , already had three children :<br />

born in 1794, James 1797, and Wil liam 1799 .<br />

Liverpool, four more sons were born:<br />

birth and life are not known, Ed\.,rard Swarbreck November 13, 1804, and<br />

Henry 1807.<br />

It is Ed\.,rard S\.,rarbreck, the sixth child and fifth son, \'lith<br />

whom this study is concerned.<br />

Both parents claimed descent from ancient and honoured families .<br />

The Hall fami ly coat-<strong>of</strong>-arms named Rodolph, Count <strong>of</strong> Hapsbrg and Emperor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Germany in 1273, the founder <strong>of</strong> the fami ly.<br />

In 1283 Rodolph's son,<br />

Albert , was Duke <strong>of</strong> Austria and later became Emperor <strong>of</strong> Germany . In 1310<br />

Albert 's son, Frederick, \'las 1ivi_ng in the Tyrol \'lith the title ttLord <strong>of</strong><br />

Hallett from whence the family later adopted the surname 11Halltt.<br />

Frederick 1 s<br />

son, Sir Frank Hal l, entered the service <strong>of</strong> Edward III <strong>of</strong> England in 1344,<br />

and was joint Marshall with Sir Walter Manny <strong>of</strong> the army <strong>of</strong> the Duke <strong>of</strong><br />

Lancaster in the \'lar <strong>of</strong> Guienne ; he \'las one <strong>of</strong> the heroes <strong>of</strong> Poi tiers ,<br />

serving with the Black Prince, the fortieth knight <strong>of</strong> the Garter, and the<br />

Governor <strong>of</strong> Calais .<br />

under Henry IV .<br />

In 1399 Sir Frank Hall' s_ grandson, Robert Hall, served<br />

He married the heiress to Sir John Leventhorpe and founded<br />

the family <strong>of</strong> Halls <strong>of</strong> Leventhorpe Hall, which became one <strong>of</strong> the most eminent<br />

in the county until the end <strong>of</strong> the ighteenth century, with its members<br />

frequently representi_<br />

Elizabeth Swarbreck was descended from the noble, German-born<br />

Ed\.,rard Van Schwartzbreck, who in 1689 t_ogether with his ttuterinett brother,
