7.4.2 Belt Spacing and Planting Density<br />

The same spatial data was used throughout for consistency and the belt spacing was varied by using a<br />

belt spacing <strong>of</strong> 75, 150 and 225 metres to represent high, medium and low planting densities<br />

respectively. This resulted in yields <strong>of</strong> 6.4, 3.2 and 2.1 green tonnes per paddock hectare respectively.<br />

Time spent moving from field to field was modelled as 3%, 6% and 9% respectively to represent<br />

increasing time spent moving as the planting density decreases. The effect <strong>of</strong> belt spacing on harvest<br />

cost is shown in Figure 7.6 to be limited. This is primarily due to the large proportion <strong>of</strong> time the<br />

harvester spends chipping in the row relative to the time spent moving between field and rows.<br />
