Alumni Nominate Trustee Candidates<br />

EARLY IN APRIL, ballots were mailed by<br />

the <strong>University</strong> Treasurer to some 95,000<br />

alumni whose addresses are known for<br />

election of two Alumni Trustees to the<br />

<strong>University</strong> Board. The Alumni Trustees<br />

elected will take office July 1 for five<br />

years. They will replace Alumni Trustees<br />

Elbert P. Tuttle '18 and Dr. Preston<br />

A. Wade '22, whose terms expire June<br />

30.<br />

Official ballots must be returned to<br />

the Treasurer in envelopes provided not<br />

later than Monday, June 8, and the<br />

names of the two Alumni Trustees<br />

elected will be announced at the annual<br />

meeting of the Alumni Association in<br />

Ithaca, June 13. Written signature of<br />

the voter must appear on the envelope.<br />

Alumni who do not receive ballots may<br />

obtain them by writing to the <strong>University</strong><br />

Treasurer, Day Hall, Ithaca. Election<br />

requires that a candidate must receive at<br />

least one-third of the votes cast.<br />

Candidates for Alumni Trustee may<br />

be nominated by any ten degree holders<br />

who file nominations with the Treasurer<br />

by midnight, April 1. The Alumni Association<br />

committee on Alumni Trustee<br />

nominations each year receives suggestions<br />

of suitable candidates from all<br />

alumni organizations and undertakes to<br />

evaluate them and have nominated at<br />

least two persons for each vacancy. This<br />

committee has members from all the<br />

constituent organizations of the Alumni<br />

Association and this year has been<br />

headed by Richard D. Vanderwarker<br />

'33. The committee does not consider<br />

the qualifications of Alumni Trustees<br />

who may run for re-election its function<br />

is to find new candidates who may best<br />

serve the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Max F. Schmitt '24 for five years has<br />

been president of The Wool Bureau,<br />

New York City, after long experience<br />

in advertising agencies. He is president<br />

of his Class and of the <strong>Cornell</strong> Club of<br />

New York, vice-president of the <strong>Cornell</strong><br />

Alumni Association of New York City,<br />

and honorary governor and past-president<br />

of the <strong>Cornell</strong> Club of Westchester<br />

County. He has been president of the<br />

Federation of <strong>Cornell</strong> Men's Clubs and<br />

Association of Class Secretaries, wrote<br />

a Handbook for Class Secretaries, has<br />

been a director of the Alumni Association<br />

and chairman of the committee on<br />

Alumni Trustee nominations. He serves<br />

on the membership committee of the<br />

<strong>University</strong> Council. Schmitt received<br />

the AB in 1924, was business manager<br />

of the Era, is a member of Phi Kappa<br />

Tau, Quill & Dagger, and Sigma Delta<br />

Chi. He lives in Scarsdale.<br />

George A. Newbury '17 has been<br />

president of Manufacturers & Traders<br />

Trust Co. in Buffalo since 1954 and<br />

previously practiced law in Buffalo. He<br />

is a director of <strong>Cornell</strong> Aeronautical<br />

Laboratory, Inc. and other business<br />

concerns and civic organizations. He received<br />

the LLB in 1917, was a member<br />

of the Varsity debating team and business<br />

manager of the Law Quarterly. He<br />

has been president of the <strong>Cornell</strong> Club<br />

of Buffalo and was '17 Class representative<br />

for the Alumni Fund; is a member<br />

of the <strong>University</strong> Council committee on<br />

bequests and administrative board. He<br />

is a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon, formerly<br />

Scorpion.<br />

Mrs. Adele Langston Rogers '33 is<br />

the wife of US Attorney General William<br />

P. Rogers, LLB '37. She has been<br />

active in civic and education affairs and<br />

last year won the "Togetherness Award"<br />

of McCalΓs magazine for her interest<br />

in education and youth and her "wonderful<br />

family life." Daughter of the late<br />

Samuel M. Langston '02 and sister of<br />

Bryant W. Langston '32, Mrs. Rogers<br />

received the AB in 1933 and came back<br />

to the Law School in 1935 after study<br />

at Stanford, receiving the LLB in 1936.<br />

She was president of the Class of '33<br />

and of WSGA and as a Senior, was<br />

president of the Intercollegiate Women<br />

Students Association. She is a member<br />
