Tune: Remembering Chang'an, Two Verses, Sent to
Pang Que 34
Eastward gazing, gazing towards Chang'an,
Directly facing where the sun first rises.
Chang'an cannot be seen;
I only see the Chang'an sun.
Where is Chang'an located?
Only beneath a horse's hooves.
Tomorrow I return to Chang'an,
For you, I hurry my horse onwards.
34 See excerpt in chapter four for a note on the “que” of Pang Que.
