Thursday crept in cold and rainy. Shobha set out armed with a peach<br />

“I did but my voice still shakes and it hasn’t evened out yet.” Shobha<br />

replied, embarrassed. Mrs. Pandit laughed a little. “Shobha, that evenness <strong>of</strong><br />

voice can be developed after a rigorous practice <strong>of</strong> at least one year. That is what<br />

you should strive <strong>to</strong> achieve though it takes a long time. If you practice<br />

everyday, it will come by. But if you s<strong>to</strong>p, even great singers — if they s<strong>to</strong>p —<br />

they lose it. Constantly practice.” Shobha wondered if she had the patience <strong>to</strong><br />

formally learn music — it required more commitment than she had ever<br />

anticipated.<br />

“Today I will teach you Raga Bhup,” Mrs. Pandit shuffled through the<br />

pages <strong>of</strong> her old notebook and s<strong>to</strong>pped at the right page. She handed the book<br />
