little attention in the past, little <strong>of</strong> that attention has focused on the middle as a<br />

middle. As I hope this study has shown, there is much to be gained by thinking<br />

explicitly <strong>of</strong> narrative middles. Attention to narrative middles can help illuminate<br />

narrative structures, highlight new texts or new passages, and, perhaps most<br />

importantly, can help us re-think what makes a text a single narrative. If we are to<br />

think <strong>of</strong> texts primarily through their beginnings and endings, the middle very easily<br />

may become a muddle. To escape an Aristotelian model <strong>of</strong> narrative means, in part,<br />

to think <strong>of</strong> the middle as something distinct, a text in itself, a space that creates, rather<br />

than is simply created by, narrative structure.<br />
