Today, the students of<br />
Hoffman High School held<br />
a memorial program In<br />
honor of the late Dr. Martin<br />
Luther King, Jr. The<br />
program opened with the<br />
salute to the flag led by<br />
Miss Frances Pirk, president,<br />
of the Student Council.<br />
The purpose of die memorial<br />
and the work ; of Dr°.<br />
King were cove red. briefly<br />
by Mrs. Frederic L. Reese,<br />
advisor to the Assembly<br />
Club of the high schpol.<br />
Highlights of Dr. King's<br />
life, his early efforts in<br />
behalf of civil rights, his<br />
part in the historic peace<br />
march in 1963 and a summary<br />
of his philosophy of<br />
non-violence were recounted<br />

not.<br />
The assembly closed with<br />
the singing of "The Battle<br />

Cutter Westwlnd following<br />
three months in the<br />
Antarctic for operation<br />
"Deep Freeze *68.<br />
In addition to escorting<br />
merchant ships through phe<br />
ice, Westwind conducted<br />
oceanographic research,<br />
twice carried cargo and<br />
scientists to the outlying<br />
U. S. base on Hallett<br />
Peninsula and conducted a<br />
seal hunt for the Harvard<br />
Biological School.<br />
Operation "Deep Freeze<br />
'68*' is a coordinated effort<br />
of civilian universities,<br />
agencies and military<br />
units on an Antarctic<br />
research program.<br />
On its way to the Antarctic<br />
the Westwind conducted a<br />
medical evacuation from a<br />
Korean ship and crossed<br />
four of the seven seas.<br />
