Rabaut Supports
Statehood Bills
I Rep. Louis C. Rabaut (D.,
• Mich.) in a statement released
recently endorsed action by the
House of Representatives on bills
enabling the present territories
of Alaska and Hawaii to join the
Federal Uhion of States.
Reports favoring statehood for
these two territories have been
before this Congress since March
10, 1949. The statehood move.
ment began in Hawaii in 1903
and in Alaska in 1912 and has
been repeatedly endorsed by
popular referendum and memorials
by the territorial legislatures.
In his statement Rep. Rabaut
I said. "The strength and security

of Alaska today is most 'vital to
our national defense. It has been
called our nation's 'Achilles heel.'
Building Alaska up economically

leaders since the day of General
Billy Mitchell.
"Aside from the question of
military security," Rep. Rabaut
continued. "the rights of patriotic

tax-paying people in Alaska have
gone unrecognized, for too long.

requirement for statehood ever

to demonstrate our strong belief

leadership in the Pacific, Hawaii
must be admitted."
"Let us hope," Rep. Rabaut
concluded, "that quick' Congressional
action will pave the way
for the addition of two new stars
to our constellation of states."
