Norsemen run in new
event at Oakland U.

Grosse Pointe North's boys'
cross-country team ran at the
new Oakland University
Golden Grizzly Invitational on
the college campus.
"It was a brand new event
and it ran pretty well," head
coach Dan Quinn said. "It wasn't
too hilly, but it was tough
enough to give the guys a good
workout."
Kyle Lacey was the
Norsemen's top runner, posting
a time of 17:32 to finish
19th. Other finishers for the

"We will definitely go back
next year," Quinn said. "This
event gave our runners a good
opportunity to run on a course
they might see several more
times this fall. My captains did
a nice job leading the way and
each of the four finished with
nice times."
Next for the team is the
Algonac Invitational Saturday,
Sept. 12.

Squads suffer division defeats

The Grosse Pointe South
girls golf team won another
easy match last week, beating
Romeo 169-237 at Heather
Hills Golf Club.
Senior Carey Farley and
sophomore Ella Pendy each
shot a 38 to lead the Blue
Devils, which improved to 2-0
in the Macomb Area
Conference Red Division.
In other league action, the
Blue Devils lost twice to division-leading
Port Huron
Northern, while Grosse Pointe
North also dropped its match to
Northern, losing 171-225 to fall
to 0-3 in the Red Division.

Grosse Pointe North's girls'
cross country team beat
Warren Mott 20-42 last week,
improving to 1-0 in dual
meets.

against former teammate and
long-time Mott head coach

"We have a tradition of racing
each other every year at
the Hill for old time's sake,"
Cooper said. "I also have two
runners this year of former
teammates, as well."
Kristina Kamm, whose father,
John, was a teammate of
Coopers, as well as Kit Maher,
whose mother, Kelly Louwers,
was another teammate of
Coopers.
As for the race, the
Norsemen's leading runner,
Kailey Sickmiller, missed it
due to a sore ankle.
However, the Norsemen
picked up the pace as Cristina
Bruno, Lindsay Brown,
Kamille Hamzey, Katy
VanEgmond, Zyana Wright-
Servais, Rachel Gimpert and
Haley Abessinio.
"Bruno ran a great race
catching up to and challenging
Mott's No. 1 runner," Cooper
said. "She passed her and took
over control of the race with a
mile to go. She gave her all but
got out kicked the last 800 meters.
It was great to see Bruno
challenging like that.
"Brown and Hamzey keep
pushing together and keep
pushing up the ranks. Seeing
seniors make a challenge to be
top runners is always great to
see. You don't always see seniors
going out on top all the
time, but Hamzey and Brown
seem determined to make a
name for themselves before
leaving GPN.
