Comedy opens theater's 62nd season

Grosse Pointe Theatre begins
its "Sparkling 62nd Season"
with the adult comedy, "Sylvia"
byA.R. Gurney.
This comedy, with adult content,
is about a New York couple
who move to Manhattan after
22 years in the suburbs. One
day Greg, the husband, brings
home an exciting new friend
from the park named Sylvia, a
wise-cracking dog. Sylvia causes
a major disturbance in the
lives of Greg and Kate. Her
unique perspective makes for
an unbroken string of laughs
from beginning to end.
Sylvia features Elizabeth
Perkin Moen of Harper Woods
in the title role. Rick Mason of
St. Clair Shores plays Greg.
Amy Kuta of Royal Oak takes
the role of Kate. Nick Szczerba
of Madison Heights plays Tom.
Laura VerBeek of Grosse
Pointe Park plays Phyllis, and
Laura Bartell of Grosse Pointe
Shores has the role of Leslie.

The theater season continues
with the musical, "The King
and I" Nov. 8,11-15, and 18-22.
The new year will be
launched with the musical
comedy, "You're a Good Man,
Charlie Brown," based on the
comic strip Peanuts by Charles
M. Schulz, with book, music
and lyrics by Clark M. Gesner;
Jan. 17,21-24,27-30.
In March, GPT presents "The
Complete Works of William
Shakespeare (abridged)" by
Adam Ix>ng, Daniel Singer and
Jess Winfield. The wild and
zany comedy runs March 7,
11-14, and 17-20.
The grand finale is the ultimate
'50s rock'n'roll musical,
"Grease," with book, music and
lyrics by Jim Jacobs and
Warren Casey, which runs May
9,13-16, andl9-23.
Theater-goers dine at theater
buffets in the Fries Crystal
Ballroom.

Aanother aardvark aarives aat zoo

For the second time in six
months, the Detroit Zoo is celebrating
the birth of an aardvark.
Believed to be a male, the baby,
named Erdferkel (German
for aardvark), was born May
23 to lily and Amybob. A DNA
test will be conducted to confirm
the sex. Erdferkel
weighed 4.8 pounds and measured
24 inches long at birth.
Amani (Swahili for peace), a
female, was born Dec. 8, 2008,
to Rachaael and Mchimbaji.
Mature aardvarks can weigh
from 90 to 145 pounds and
grow 5 to 6 feet in length.

Hearty zucchini bread can be served for breakfast or dessert.
Time tested recipe
Some of the best
recipes out there are
the ones that have
been around forever
(so it seems anyway).
The following take on zucchini
bread is no exception. I have
baked and tasted many a zucchini
bread and this one is tops.
Marda McCoy has been baking
this moist and delicious
bread for years and it is truly
among the best I have ever
sampled.
Zucchini season is here so
grab some and go for it.
Marcia's Homemade
Zucchini Bread
2 cups flour
1 tablespoon cinnamon
2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
3 eggs
2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla

1 cup chopped walnuts or I
pecans, optional I
In a medium bowl sift togetrfer
the flour, cinnamon, baking
soda, salt and baking powder
and set aside. Preheat oven to
350 degrees.
Beat the eggs in a large bowl
until frothy. Beat in the sugar,
vanilla and salad oil.
Add in the dry ingredients, a
bit at a time, beating until well
blended. Fold in the shredded
zucchini (and nuts, if you
choose). Mix by hand until well
combined. Turn the batter into:
two greased loaf pans and bake
at 350 for about an hour, until
the center of the loaf passes the
clean knife test for doneness. Z
Cool the loaves for 10 minutes *-
then turn out of the pans to finish
cooling. ;
This hearty zucchini bread
can be served for breakfast or
even dessert when topped with
some fresh whipped cream or
cream cheese frosting. Add *
some fresh berries and you'll r
