After many years as a valued track and cross country assistant,<br />
J.D. Edwards led Grosse Pointe N<strong>or</strong>th's boys cross country<br />
team <strong>to</strong> a ruunet-up finish iu the state in his only season<br />
CIS head coach.<br />
While Edwards was w<strong>or</strong>kmg<br />
WIth the track program, those<br />
teams were 108.2 m dual competItIOn<br />
with 10 straight undefeated<br />
seasons, 10 conference<br />
champIOnshIps and eIght regIonal<br />
crowns<br />
In 1979, Edwards replaced<br />
Gauerke as head coach in cross<br />
country and track. HIS cross<br />
country team won league and<br />
regIonal champlOnships and fin.<br />
Ished second m the state Class<br />
A meet HIS track team was 9-1<br />
In dual meets and won its regIonal<br />
Edwards grew up on the east<br />
SIde of Detroit and partIcipated<br />
in track at Southeastern HIgh<br />
School He graduated from<br />
Eastern Michigan Umversity<br />
where he was a sprinter and<br />
hurdler on one of the <strong>to</strong>p track<br />
squads m the natlOn<br />
He taught in the DetroIt pubhc<br />
schools f<strong>or</strong> 18 years, volunteering<br />
as track coach at<br />
Grosse Pointe HIgh School.<br />
When N<strong>or</strong>th opened in 1968,<br />
Edwards joined the school's science<br />
department, where he<br />
taught biology and started<br />
classes in microbology and phy-<br />
SIOlogy<br />
Regelbrugge started the boys<br />
soccer program at N<strong>or</strong>th in<br />
1980 and it was an immediate<br />
success The first-year team<br />
was 14-1-2 and advanced <strong>to</strong> the<br />
regional final. In the 14 years<br />
Regelbrugge has guided the<br />
boys soccer team, the N<strong>or</strong>semen<br />
have compiled a 175-56-24<br />
rec<strong>or</strong>d that includes 11 league,<br />
two dlstnct and one regIonal<br />
champIOnship<br />
When girls soccer started at<br />
N<strong>or</strong>th m 1985, Regelbrugge<br />
also <strong>to</strong>ok over that program<br />
and It has been Just as successful.<br />
In 10 seasons the Lady<br />
N<strong>or</strong>semen are 135-23-7 with<br />
eIght league champIOnships,<br />
three district tttles and one regIonal<br />
crown HIS 1993 team<br />
was ranked thIrd m the final<br />
state poll and lost <strong>to</strong> the eventual<br />

Regelbrugge grew up III<br />
Esko, BelgIUm, where he<br />
learned soccer at an early age<br />
After playmg f<strong>or</strong> several com<br />
mumty teams, he was drafted<br />
by Esko's semIpro team when<br />
he was 16 When he entered<br />
teacher's college m St NIcolas<br />
he played f<strong>or</strong> the school's team<br />
that defeated several amateur<br />
and profeSSIOnal squads and<br />
reached the semmnals of the<br />
Belgian National ChampIonship<br />
in 1957<br />
After servmg in the air f<strong>or</strong>ce,<br />
Regelbrugge was urged <strong>to</strong> play<br />
pro soccer, but mstead ImmIgrated<br />
<strong>to</strong> the Umted States<br />
Regelbrugge's EnglIsh was<br />
limlwd when he arrived III the<br />
DetroIt area, but he wanted <strong>to</strong><br />
teach French at the high school<br />
level He mtervlewed at St<br />
Rose School m the summer of<br />
1961 and was offered a Job<br />
teaching French and social<br />
studies, contmgent on hIS<br />
learnmg EnglIsh He spent 18<br />
hours a day that summer learnmg<br />
the language and m the<br />
fall started teaching at St.<br />
Rose. He taught there f<strong>or</strong> five<br />
years while obtammg hIS teaching<br />
certificate frO!!! the Umversity<br />
of Detroit.<br />
Regelbrugge did his student<br />
teaching at Grosse Pomte High<br />
School in 1966 and made such<br />
an impression on the adnumstration<br />
that he was hlred Immediately.<br />
He was a member of N<strong>or</strong>th's<br />
first staff m 1968, but smce soc<br />
cer wasn't a sp<strong>or</strong>t recogmzed by<br />
the Michigan High School Athletic<br />
ASSOCIatIOn,Regelbrugge<br />
stayed m <strong>to</strong>uch With the game<br />
by coachIng neIghb<strong>or</strong>hood age<br />
group teams<br />
In 1979 he was offered the<br />
varsity boys and gIrls Jobs at<br />
Birmingham Groves and<br />
coached both teams <strong>to</strong> wmmng<br />
rec<strong>or</strong>ds The folloWIng year he<br />
began hIS long and successful<br />
tenure at N<strong>or</strong>th<br />
Edward!> and Regelbrugge<br />
each fit the CrIterIa fO!entermg<br />
N<strong>or</strong>th's Hall of Fame - coach<br />
mg f<strong>or</strong> a minImum of 10 years,<br />
a head coach f<strong>or</strong> at least one<br />
year and must have made a<br />
