The second chapter exam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> displaced utopian dreams that position<br />

extraterrestrials as key <strong>in</strong>terlocutors from 1930-1960. The space bro<strong>the</strong>rs take <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dead and ascended masters as central figure <strong>of</strong> alterity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> movements exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> this<br />

chapter. So-called space bro<strong>the</strong>r religions extend <strong>the</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>gs and practices <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century movements previously discussed <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> twentieth century. The messages<br />

carried by <strong>the</strong> space bro<strong>the</strong>rs are <strong>in</strong>itially very similar to those carried by <strong>the</strong>ir spectral<br />

predecessors; what changes is <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> messenger. The chapter exam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> implications<br />

<strong>of</strong> this shift, address<strong>in</strong>g what, aside from <strong>the</strong> obvious appeal <strong>of</strong> novelty, o<strong>the</strong>r significance <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> turn toward outer space as po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> orig<strong>in</strong> for privileged figures <strong>of</strong> alterity. The chapter<br />

proceeds via an exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key “contactees,” <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>terstellar tutors, and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

followers.<br />

Chapter three exam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fly<strong>in</strong>g saucer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> years follow<strong>in</strong>g Kenneth<br />

Arnold’s famed 1947 sight<strong>in</strong>g. Of particular <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> this chapter is <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> what<br />

becomes known as “ufology.” An exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> this “science” <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>f<strong>in</strong>g constitutes <strong>the</strong><br />

center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chapter. In terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ongo<strong>in</strong>g tension between <strong>the</strong> positivist hegemony and <strong>the</strong><br />

process <strong>of</strong> neo-enchantment, ufology constitutes a moment where <strong>the</strong> latter attempts to wholly<br />

adopt <strong>the</strong> standards <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former. The arrival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unidentified fly<strong>in</strong>g object on <strong>the</strong> scene both<br />

provided <strong>the</strong> occasion for an adoption <strong>of</strong> strictly empirical standards and marked a moment <strong>of</strong><br />

exhaustion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> modern attempt to materialize <strong>the</strong> e<strong>the</strong>real.<br />

Chapter four exam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> abduction. With <strong>the</strong> change to abduction as<br />

primary mode <strong>of</strong> contact between human and extraterrestrial, we see both a shift <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> central<br />

figure <strong>of</strong> alterity (with a movement toward <strong>the</strong> contemporary “gray” aliens as key <strong>in</strong>terlocutor)<br />

and <strong>the</strong> mode <strong>of</strong> communication. While contactees generally communicated with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
