In September <strong>of</strong> 1963, some two years after <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial encounter, <strong>the</strong> Hills were <strong>in</strong>vited to<br />
relate <strong>the</strong>ir story to a discussion group at <strong>the</strong>ir church. This was to be <strong>the</strong> first time <strong>the</strong>y had<br />
spoken <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir traumatic experience <strong>in</strong> public. Also speak<strong>in</strong>g at this meet<strong>in</strong>g was Air Force<br />
Capta<strong>in</strong> Ben Swett. Swett, who was <strong>in</strong>vited to speak that even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> part because <strong>of</strong> his study <strong>of</strong><br />
hypnosis, was struck by how abruptly <strong>the</strong> Hills’ story ended after <strong>the</strong> moment <strong>the</strong>y heard a series<br />
<strong>of</strong> tones emanat<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> trunk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir car. Barney later recalled <strong>the</strong> events lead<strong>in</strong>g up to that<br />
moment as follows. On <strong>the</strong> night <strong>of</strong> September 19-20, 1961, after sight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> craft at close<br />
range and actually see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> occupants <strong>of</strong> said craft, Barney ran back to <strong>the</strong> car, near<strong>in</strong>g<br />
hysteria. As he and Betty drove away, Betty found that she could no longer see <strong>the</strong> vessel.<br />
Barney yelled repeatedly that he was sure it had swung above <strong>the</strong>m. An irregularly rhythmic<br />
beep<strong>in</strong>g sound began to fill <strong>the</strong> air, “<strong>the</strong> car seemed to vibrate with it.” It sounded like, as <strong>the</strong><br />
Hills later described <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>terview with Air Force Major Paul W. Henderson, “someone had<br />
dropped a tun<strong>in</strong>g fork.” 258 The sound seemed to orig<strong>in</strong>ate from <strong>the</strong> trunk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> car. Nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />
Betty nor Barney could identify it. As <strong>the</strong> beep<strong>in</strong>g proceeded, <strong>the</strong>y both fell <strong>in</strong>to a sort <strong>of</strong> daze.<br />
Some time later <strong>the</strong> beep<strong>in</strong>g repeated and <strong>the</strong> Hills found <strong>the</strong>mselves still <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir car, travel<strong>in</strong>g<br />
down <strong>the</strong> road. As Barney later put it, Swett “was <strong>in</strong>terested that <strong>the</strong> account was cut <strong>of</strong>f as if<br />
by a cleaver at that po<strong>in</strong>t.” 259<br />
A discussion <strong>of</strong> hypnotism as a potential tool for unlock<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
mystery <strong>of</strong> what occurred after <strong>the</strong> series <strong>of</strong> tones ensued.<br />
After <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> church discussion group, Barney broached <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong><br />
hypnosis with his <strong>the</strong>rapist. Barney, after becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly exhausted and enervated, had<br />
sought psychiatric assistance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 1962. So it came to pass that after a year and a<br />
half <strong>of</strong> conventional <strong>the</strong>rapy, his <strong>the</strong>rapist, Dr. Duncan Stephens, referred Barney to Dr.<br />
