<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fered explanation was reduced to <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly vertig<strong>in</strong>ous models <strong>of</strong> halluc<strong>in</strong>ation,<br />

confabulation and conspiracy. The wide variety <strong>of</strong> explanations <strong>of</strong>fered by Klass and Menzel<br />

speaks to <strong>the</strong> urgency and diligence <strong>of</strong> debunk<strong>in</strong>g efforts.<br />

In terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hoped-for rapprochement between science and spirit, at <strong>the</strong> far end <strong>of</strong><br />

proximity, mere sight<strong>in</strong>gs and close encounters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first k<strong>in</strong>d, science trumped spirit. The<br />

most readily available explanations were based on known visual, atmospheric and astronomical<br />

phenomena. Questions <strong>of</strong> forces that lay outside <strong>the</strong> materialist conception <strong>of</strong> reality rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

un-raised because unneeded. Someth<strong>in</strong>g was seen, but those someth<strong>in</strong>gs were with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> realm<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> known. As encounters moved closer to <strong>the</strong> object, <strong>the</strong> objective correlates <strong>of</strong>fered via<br />

scientific explanation dw<strong>in</strong>dled to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t where <strong>the</strong> preferred explanation became<br />

psychological. Someth<strong>in</strong>g was seen, but those someth<strong>in</strong>gs were mis<strong>in</strong>terpreted via <strong>the</strong><br />

mechanisms <strong>of</strong> mania or psychosis. Alternately noth<strong>in</strong>g was seen and <strong>the</strong> supposed percipients<br />

were liars. So science <strong>of</strong>fered noth<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> believer—<strong>the</strong>re was no potential shared ground. At<br />

<strong>the</strong> far end <strong>of</strong> proximity, witnesses were <strong>in</strong>formed that <strong>the</strong>y were mistaken—<strong>the</strong>y saw noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that existed outside <strong>the</strong> boundaries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> known world. At <strong>the</strong> close end, witnesses <strong>of</strong> close<br />

encounters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third k<strong>in</strong>d were <strong>in</strong>formed <strong>the</strong>y were alternately stupid, liars or mad.<br />

The most vocal and visible figures with<strong>in</strong> ufology have <strong>of</strong>ten been <strong>the</strong> debunkers. In<br />

turn, much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g attached to <strong>the</strong> UFO has been provided by explanations that constitute<br />

<strong>the</strong> UFO as someth<strong>in</strong>g else—an optical property or misperceived planet. As defenders <strong>of</strong><br />

quotidian reality, debunkers function as true believers, keepers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> faith. Menzel was a classic<br />

example <strong>of</strong> how wishful th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fects <strong>the</strong> debunker as effectively as those who believed<br />

UFO’s real. Donald Howard Menzel (1901-1976) had impeccable academic and scientific<br />

credentials—enrolled as an undergraduate at 16, graduate work at Pr<strong>in</strong>ceton, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> very first<br />
