Membership
Fees for 2010
Due to the unfortunate but
considerable rise in expenditure
including insurance, paper and
postage costs, BDS members
will see their membership
subscription rise for next year.
These costs have been absorbed
by the BDS over the last four
years so that membership could
remain the same, however
the increase is now such that
it now has to be reflected in
membership subscription.
Renewal of BDS membership
is December 31st, so members
who pay by standing order,
please contact your bank or
building society, to make the
necessary changes.
The new price structure will be:
Juniors £12
(instead of £10)
Adult membership £28
(formerly £25) renewal price,
(£35 for new adult members
first year including the joining
fee)
Dual membership £45
(formerly £40)
Initial joining fee for new
members will be £7 per
member (that is £14 for the
dual membership) Juniors do
not pay a joining fee.
However please note that every
effort to keep the rise to a
minimum has been made and
that the actual highest raise is £3.
BDS Wales Welsh Trek Championships
This year, following a request by a Welsh BDS member,
BDS Wales put on the first Welsh Trek Championships.
Each area hosted a qualifying Trek event open to any BDS
member and the first three at each event qualified to go
to the Championships which were held on Sunday 13th
September in the fantastic surroundings of the Forestry
Commission managed Crychan Forest.
The day itself dawned misty and murky before breaking
to stunning sunshine. Competitors attended a briefing
from organiser, Sian Burrows, before setting off to get
ready. Following a harness inspection, there was a 6.8 mile
marathon, cones course and skills section. Food and drink
were available in between sections and conversation was
Mike Davies and his groom Liam with Mike’s coloured Jack.
The turnout won the BDS Wales Welsh Trek Championship
Shield donated by N. Wales AC, Morfydd Greatorex and
husband Mike. A close second was Emily Ham with her
groom Chris and Emily’s Section C stallion, Jack.
Thank you to all the competitors who took part and
made the day such a success. Thank you also to the
stewards, some of whom travelled specially down from N.
Wales just to help out, the catering staff (although we may
never let them out of our sight without GPS ever again)
and all those who volunteered their time to help. We look
forward to next year’s event with great anticipation.
Two breed shows in two weeks at the farthest ends of Great Britain for two Isle
of Wight Carriage drivers. Margaret Honeybourne of Havenstreet and Abigail
Mackett ,12 years old, of Wootton both British Driving Society members took part in
the Shetland Society breed show at Lerwick in the Shetland Islands on Saturday 21st
August. This show will only be held every ten years so it was decided to take a once
in a lifetime trip along with Abigail’s mother Nicki and lorry driver Brian. They took
two days to travel each way and the boat from Aberdeen to Lerwick took 12 hours
overnight with only one crossing a day. They then had a few days to recover and let
the ponies rest before the show on the Saturday. Margaret was third in her class and
Abigail was second in the Junior driving and third in the child handler. The ponies
they drove were Clothie x-toll and Skyrack Huntsman. Then on Sunday 30th August
Margaret Honeybourne took part in the New Forest Pony Breed show at Brockenhurst
in the New Forest with Rushmoor Dark Lady 2nd winning the class and best of breed,
highest placed traditional vehicle and forest bred.
With the number of show drives declining and the
current economic climate, this award is getting more
difficult to obtain but showing an increase in participants, is
obviously still popular. The BDS would like to thank Mark
Broadbent for his continuing sponsorship of this valued
and special award.
BDS TREC IN WILTSHIRE
Following the success of the joint venture Trec held with Oxfordshire,
Wiltshire held a second event in Wiltshire which was held at Park Farm Nr
Marlborough the home of Karin Swanson. The drive included a large section of
West Woods and the nearby Byway. The Drive was followed by a skills section
and an optional cones course.
It was a really super day with everyone enjoying the really happy relaxed
atmosphere.
The 2010 BDS Dinner dance and AGM is moving to
popularity of the event in the last 2 years, and will be a big
end of season party. Once again Mr Tony Morris of Victoria
Foods has very generously provided £500 towards the cost
of the Band. Next years’ band is the hugely popular 80’s
Affair, an eightys tribute band who play nationwide and
have performed for the BBC. It is intended that on the same
Carriage Foundation Report
Following the visit to Denmark in 2007 by members
of the Carriage Foundation, it was our turn to host a
visit by members of The Danish Carriage Society. Thirty
members arrived at Birmingham Airport on Monday
September 14th for a 5-day visit. They made their base at
The Rutland Hotel in Bakewell, Derbyshire (formerly The
White Horse Hotel – a changing hostelry between Buxton
& Derby).
Caroline Dale-Leech welcomed the group to the
Working Carriage Museum at Red House Stables on
Tuesday morning and following a guided tour of her private
vehicle collection the group climbed aboard the Coach &
Four-in-Hand, plus a Carriage & Pair and travelled through
the Derbyshire Dales to Chatsworth Estate where, by kind
permission of the Duchess of Devonshire, were allowed to
journey through the private section of the Park making it a
truly memorable trip.
The Group also spent a day at Calke Abbey with the
unique vehicle collection of Homes of Derby, followed the
next day by a visit to see the carriages at Shugborough
Hall with the week ending with a wonderful and full day at
Beamish Open Air Museum in Co.Durham.
The Carriage Foundation is planning a visit to Northern
Germany for April 18th – 25th 2010 and everyone and
anyone is welcome to join the group. These trips are
interesting and great fun - let me know if you are interested
in receiving details of this or any future trips.
British Driving Society | Young Drivers
Adam Black
Kelvin KBB Scholarship Winner for driver not trained
at a professional yard in 2008 was Adam Black (16
yr) from Castlewellan, Co Down. Northern Ireland. Each
winner was to receive driving tuition at a BDS approved
yard of their choice and for Adam it had to be Swingletree
stables, Norfolk. When asked why, he said “Swingletree is
one of the largest carriage driving centres in Europe and
home to the famous London-Norwich Royal Mail Coach
and with more than 30 horses and ponies of all shapes
and sizes. It is a unique opportunity for me to have a go at
pairs, tandems, small ponies and big Hungarian horses. “I
was very grateful to have the opportunity to take part with
the London-Norwich Royal Mail Coach at the Royal Welsh
Show with over 220,000 people coming to see the show,
it was a bit nerve racking. At the CLA game Fair- this event
was drier than the Royal Welsh Show but was high pressure
due to us being in the ring twice or even three times a day,
a lot of harness & coach cleaning!” Adam said “it was really
cool to have intense instruction on the rein machine and
then down to the international size dressage arena, this
was where I progressed more confidently to driving cones
courses with the tandem.” When asked about his overall experience at Swingletree “I was made to feel at
home with generous hospitality and everyone is so helpful and it was a privilege to have at least 4 different
combinations of animals to drive everyday.” Adam’s next goal is to compete at Osborne Refrigerators BDS
National Championships in Essex.
Adam qualified at Ballynahinch Carriage
Driving Festival with friend Mervyn
Ward’s Roan Welsh pony Fronarth
Flashman. Adam wanted to say “many
thanks and heartfelt gratitude to all at
Swingletree Stables and Kelvin BDS
Junior Scholarship for giving me this
once in a life time opportunity although
I think I may be back for Teams!!”
Congratulations to Adam for passing
his WATO certificate, Road Driving and
Preliminary Test.
Young Drivers Day at Ober Farm
On Sunday 20thSeptember 2009, 16 young drivers, 6
driving turn-outs and a heap of helpers/instructors
arrived at Ober Farm for a busy day. All the drivers had a turn
at driving a dressage test, tackling an obstacle, and then a
cones competition. Some as young as six were taking part for
the first time and I think they will be badgering their parents
about coming again next time!
The trophy for the most improved young driver in
Kay receiving her trophy.
Hampshire went to Kay Whittle who had also been to take
part in the junior camp at Swingletreethis year. Kay had also put together a photo album
showing her many activities involving horses, so congratulations to her!
Also congratulations go to Jack Ralph who won the Ober trophy for the most improved over
the two driving days. Many thanks to everyone who came and supported the day, especially
all the helpers who gave up their time to contribute to the days success, and also thanks go to
Sarah for organising all the Young Drivers days in Hampshire. Heres to next year!
Driving Hungarian pair Carlos and Levente enjoying quiet road driving
Liam goes Tandem
Since starting Carriage driving, I have had a great
interest in the different combinations of driving
horses. Tandem driving, being the most intriguing.
In 2008 I was steward at the Tandem Club Meet in
Wales. This experience inspired me to put together
my own turnout, with the aim of attending the 2009
meet. I had previously had great fun in putting my
cob Layton in tandem with area member Katrina
Crabbs’ “Kitty”. Unfortunately, Kitty’s ill health
meant that she could no longer work. We then put
Katrina’s section A ponies in tandem, which was a
great experience and great fun, but I really wanted
to put my cob Layton in tandem. Former A/C
Richard Taylor was kind enough to offer his cob
Daniel on loan. We started working with Daniel and
Layton immediately. Dad and I long reined them in
tandem before putting them to our two-wheeled
exercise vehicle. That first trip through the lanes
was brilliant! I spent a week with Mark Evans LHHI
having tandem driving lessons with Mark’s Friesian
stallions. We would return with one tandem after
a morning’s driving, harness the other 2 horses,
and go out on the road again, averaging approx
16 miles a day. On May 31st I did my first drive
on my competence sheet for the Tandem Club
Meet entry form, driving Daniel and Layton at the
Merthyr Drive in our area. At our area Junior drive I
again drove Tandem. Mr. John Williams in Clydach
hosted my third drive. I enjoyed every single
outing. During all this time, Daniel and Layton had
taken up residence at Mark’s in Llangadog. As I live
in the middle of town, it’s not always safe to drive
in the heavy traffic, so Dad and I travelled 100 miles
every day for 3 weeks to drive them in Llangadog.
The day of the Tandem Meet arrived and I felt both
nervous and excited. On arriving at Badminton the
weather was typically British “Raining”. Everyone at
the meet was very friendly and helpful. I received a
lot of support from my area members, who turned
up on the day wearing T-shirts with the logo “Team
Tapp” and “Liam for President”, which they’d had
printed especially for the day.
My drive started with a safety check by
Richard James and a figure of eight. After a slight
adjustment to my harness I was off en route. I
thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the drive,
with the woodland section being my favourite
part. I have never enjoyed driving so much as
driving a Tandem! It’s such a great feeling. I would
like to thank everyone for their support and
encouragement, Mark Evans for my tuition, and a
big thank you to the organisers for making this such
a brilliant day. I was over the moon to gain my Bars
and become a member of The Tandem Club, this
was a day I will never forget, and as for the “Rain”
What Rain?
Four horse drawn gigs visited West Waterford
on July 9th and 10th to raise funds for cancer
research. The ‘Trip of Hope’ by a group of friends
of Cork Cancer Research Centre from West Cork,
is a novel eleven day event which saw the gigs
visit Cork, Kerry and Waterford to raise funds and
promote awareness of cancer research in Ireland.
The four horse drawn gigs were in Dungarvan
BDS Members in Republic of Ireland in
on July 9th and travelling from Cappoquin to Fermoy
on July 10th. In addition there was an old time
Threshing Event in the grounds of the Gleneagle
Hotel in Killarney on Sunday July 14 and a ‘Euro-
Furlong’ event at the Killarney races on July 15.
The group were excited to take part in this novel
fundraising event and called on Waterford people to
come along and support them, and they did.
The Cork Cancer Research Centre is a
partnership between the Cork Hospitals and
University College Cork and the objective of the
centre is to investigate fundamental issues that may
be applied to prevent or treat cancer in Ireland.
So well done to all who took part.
Thistledown
Eric at HOYS
It was Eric's last time at HOYS as he
was retired that day, we always said
we would retire him while he was
still at the top. We were pleased with
the sixth place as I think it was the
best line up in years and any turnout
could have won. Eric strutted his
stuff as always showing his extension
and character that has made him
so good over the last few years and
able to clinch the Osborne National
Championship Twice. The owner of
Thistledown Stud approached us at
HOYS and would very much like us
to have another one of their ponies
as Eric has promoted the stud so
much. So there is always a possibility
that Eric may yet make the odd
appearance as a tandem leader with
a companion as we will never part
with him.
Show Reports
Dazzling and Delightful at Driving Towerlands
With a breathtaking 67 classes to choose from, competitors were spoilt for choice
at this year’s End of Season Driving Finale. Held on the 3rd and 4th October
at Towerlands, the cream of British driving gathered to compete at the Osborne
Refrigerators BDS National Championships for a chance of Championship glory.
Culminating in the National Private Driving Championship on the Sunday,
the weekend was kick-started on Saturday with some preliminary judging for the
Championships and a packed schedule of supporting classes notably the hotly
contested Balanced Horse Feeds Mountain & Moorland Championship; five class
winners came forward but it was Vivien Hampton and her Shetland Makalan Mac who
came out top.
Saturday evening’s Gala Performance was a high octane powered performance
which started with the Osborne Refrigerators BDS National Exercise Vehicle
Championship. A hot favourite with competitors in the Exercise Vehicle Type Sections,
the overall winner this year was put to a four wheeler and owned and driven by Mr
Mark Howman.
Entertainment was provided by Black Magic, a co-ordinated musical drive using
Friesians and Shetlands supported by Ashfields Carriage & Polo Club. In contrast the
Osborne Refrigerators Double Harness Scurry wowed the crowds with the speed and
precision of their phenomenal ponies. With the box located right at their feet, those
seated at the front of the Viewing Restaurant were treated to a particularly intimate view
of the action!
New to the evening was the Siemens UK Jump & Drive Challenge which saw
four national representatives first driving a cones course and after a quick swap from
harness to saddle, jump the same course, all against the clock. The audience were
kept on the edge of their seats, as were some of the competitors, by the antics of the
equine participants. The eventual winner was the Scottish team represented by Eleanor
Bosenquet whose Shetland, Clothie Flynn, showed great heart and dedication to take
the prize.
A slight change in pace heralded the finals of the Carriagehouse Insurance
Concours d’Elegance, which judged by Lady Burnham, produced Tanya Howard driving
her own Spider, put to a spider phaeton as the eventual winner.
The Kelvin KBB Junior Driver Scholarship awards were presented by Richard
Lanni to winners Natasha Pritty, Chelsea Bailey and William Eccles. Each of these lucky
winners will receive £500 towards training at a BDS approved establishment of their
choice. Congratulations to them all.
Encouraged by an enthusiastic audience the competitors in the Hackney Horse
Championships picked up the pace and upped their game as the applause rose. The
Hackney Horse of the Year was won for the second year running by Mr C. Moran
driving his own Drewsherne Corrall. And for the third consecutive year Mr L. Huckriede
driving Mr G. Van Nispens’ Sunbeam Victory took The Hackney Pony of the Year title.
The Costers turnouts were a fantastic and colourful spectacle, which involve an
enormous amount of effort. A huge thank you must go to everyone who took part in
producing these turnoutsand for offering their goods in the auction. A magnificent
£1,225 was raised in aid of disabled driving.
The Osborne Refrigerators BDS National Light Trade Championship saw an amazing
array of high quality turnouts from the various sections including butchers carts, trolleys
and delivery vans. The eventual winner was Mr Edward Smith driving the Smith Bros’
Baldwins John Boy to an original London delivery van. Not to be out-done, and keeping
it in the family, was Lucy Smith, who driving her usual show ring stalwart, the Smith
Bros’ Royal Sunshine, headed the line as the National Young Driver 2009.
Away from the ring, there was still plenty to do, whether wandering through the
trade stands or taking time out to admire the magnificent carriages on display in the
Trade Hall. Of particular interest was the 1908 Brewster Brougham owned by Mr
Stan Harris. There were demonstrations of harness making, the chance to test your
knowledge and the opportunity to talk to BDS officials about anything and everything.
More spectators than ever visited the show and were found in large numbers by the
ringsides supporting their friends, or simply out for the day; and always watching the
classes with interest and applause.
On the Sunday the show welcomed competitors in a myriad of classes. There were
the coaching teams in the Eugene Larkin Carriages Four-in-Hand Class. After a drive
of about five miles in the gorgeous sunshine, judge Roger Clark chose his winner - Mr
Bob Alexander driving his wife’s team of Gelderlanders put to a Park Drag, and who
received the Tom Ryder Memorial Trophy. In complete contrast the donkeys took
centre-stage with two classes, and the Team Fuller Donkey Championship went to Jill
Oliver’s Mix & Match. Then there was the Carriage Driving Magazine Coloured Horse
Championship won for a remarkable third time in a row by Norman Brown’s Rosehall
Tara Maiden driven by Alexander Presho. With a change of emphasis to the vehicle,
John Snowdon driving his Shetlands to an 1897 Mulliner built Ralli Car took the T. Cribb
& Sons Vintage Vehicle title. And one to watch for 2010 – Andrew Hamilton Rhodes
with Heartland Red Rocket – the QTR Transport Novice Champion.
The show finished with the Osborne Refrigerators BDS National Private Driving
Championship which was judged in ice skating style by Sophie Adkins, Phyllis Gouedart
and Elizabeth Russell. After each competitor’s show they displayed their individual
mark out of ten. With the winners of each of the private driving classes coming
forward, the standard of driving and quality of turnout was impressive. However
only one can win it and this year that accolade went to Minta Winn driving Mr Mike
Clarke’s Thorneyside The Foreman put to an Offord Stanhope Gig. The chestnut
Welsh D showed fantastic paces and movement and making full use of the arena
and atmosphere really showed himself off. Coming Reserve, in what was a fantastic
weekend for the Smith family, was Eddie Smith driving the Smith Bros’ Baldwins John
Boy to a Liverpool Park Phaeton.
Driving Towerlands just gets bigger and better each year, while the standard and
number of people taking part in the show is simply breathtaking. A huge thank you
must go to the all the people that make this show possible, the sponsors, the officials,
those that loaned carriages, manned the trade stands, provided displays or took time
out of their normal lives and jobs to help make the show the fantastic production that
it is. Each year brings something new and we can only wait and wonder what it will be
for next time.
BDS Wales
Fantastic entries and great weather
heralded the start of the BDS Wales
Show in Carmarthen. Hosting for the
very first time, a Horse of the Year Show
qualifier, BDS Wales was determined to
show competitors its brilliant facilities
and make sure everyone had a good
time. New to the show this year was
the Coloured class which showed a
particularly strong entry and also the
Shetland class which was composed
completely of Shetland pairs, a
wonderful sight. Excellent commentary
Junior Whip Winner Vicky Morris
Show Supreme and HOYS qualifier John
Bulmer with Monnington Overture
from Brian Sims explained the classes to
onlookers who never had a dull moment
once classes commenced.
John Bulmer took the ultimate
honours of the day and the HOYS ticket
with his stunning Morgan, Monnington
Overture. John was overjoyed. “ He
wasn’t very good in the earlier class but
we got a chance to really warm up and
he flew in the Open Private Drive to
get into the Championship” John puts
this down to the huge area available
to competitors to warm up in before
they enter the ring. Coming Reserve
was Joe Rowe driving his own Hackney
Mare Brookeborough Stepping Star
having gotten up at an early hour to
make it to the show. Judges Sarah
Wildy and Sophie Adkins were full
of praise for all the competitors and it
seemed the feeling was mutual, with
several competitors making it known
to show management how much they
appreciated the judges’ helpful and
insightful remarks about their turnouts.
The Exercise Vehicle Championship
was won by Wendy Morris driving her
own Lakehead Starlite and Ladbury Mac
a.k.a Mac and Dougal. Having won the
Shetland class earlier, and also gaining
a qualifier to Towerlands, Wendy was
looking forward with great enthusiasm.
Coming Reserve to Wendy was Peter
Lewis driving his own Little Paddocks
Pippin.
Winning the Posh Pets’n’Ponies
Junior Driver Class was Vicky Morris
driving Mr & Mrs A. Morris’ Ceristan
BarnfieldBoy. Another happy lady
was Avis Purnell as driving her own
Commanche Dancer, she won the
Coloured Class and the Pleasure Driving
Class.
The most prolific competitor of
the day was Emily Ham driving her
own Crossfield Glory. Emily won the
Non-Hackney Under 13.2hh Private
Driving Class, Long Reining, Welsh
this year thanks to the university of
great on both days, the entries on
Saturday were down but were well
supported on the Sunday. Our judge Mr.
as the classes were large and some had
to be split to make it easier and fairer.
Victoria Foods
Carriage Driving
Extravaganza
Andrew Hamilton-Rhodes clinched
the double titles of Show Supreme
Champion and also Victoria Foods
Champion driving His and John
Hollister’s Brookeborough Duke, at the
first ever Victoria Foods Carriage Driving
Extravaganza. Coming Reserve to
Andrew in both the Show Supreme and
the Victoria Foods Championship was
Mr James Howell driving his own bay
Leyeswick Benross. The Show Supreme
Championship was presided over by
judges, Jackie Boucher and Terry Barrett
who after careful consideration of the
turnouts and enthusiastic applause from
the delighted audience repeated the
earlier decision from the Victoria Foods
Championship. The Saturday evening
event was a fantastic display of some of
the best of carriage driving, stewards
and judges were arrayed in their finest
black tie which was emulated in the glitz
and glamour displayed by the Hackney
Show Wagon classes. Winning the
Hackney horse to a show wagon class
was Janice Clough driving Halloughton
Hallmark which she has previously
driven as part of a very successful pair.
However the pair were pipped to the
title of Champion Hackney by the winner
of the Hackney pony to a show wagon
class, Mr Richard Walker driving his own
Perrybridge Sandman. The strongest
class of the night was the Light trade
and Coachman class which boasted
several outstanding turnouts giving
judge, Modris Kesans a hard decision
to make. He eventually decided upon
Tony Thomas’ Hackney, Sunbeam the
Governor.Winning the Junior Whip aged
15-17 class and also the hotly contested
Vanessa Hunter-Thompson Junior Whip
Championship was Victoria Morris
driving Tony and Liz Morris’ Ceristan
Barnfield Boy.
The Victoria Foods Carriage
Driving Extravaganza, for its first year,
has certainly lived up to its name.
Incorporating an array of classes from
Rag, Tag and Bobtails to Private Driving
Classes, there is certainly something for
everyone. Entries for the weekend were
good and the weather was stunning.
Show Chairman, Tony Morris was
eager to explain how he wanted all the
competitors to feel welcome at the show
and to have a good time socially as well
as in the ring. The Hand Equestrian
Centre is certainly equipped to fulfil this,
boasting immaculate stabling, indoor and
outdoor rings, catering facilities on site
including bar and disco and all within
the immediate vicinity of the lorry parks.
This show will only become bigger and
better as time goes on and with such
great facilities and show personnel on
hand, great things will happen. Next
years’ dates are September 11th and
12th 2010.
SCOTTISH SHOW
2009
Following heavy rain during the week
running up to the Show we were
all holding our breath and hoping that
the forecasters had got it right for a dry
day and they did not disappoint. The
new location for the Show alongside
the Kelso country show at the border
Union showground met with approval
from all concerned. The Showground is
a permanent site with offices, display/
function hall and toilets etc and located
just on the edge of the lovely Borders
Town of Kelso. We were made very
welcome by the BU Show Organisers as
they felt we were an added draw for their
show and included the BDS show in their
publicity.
The atmosphere at the Scottish Show
is always welcoming and our hospitality
tent run by all our show helpers was busy
all day. We were delighted to have the
support and the
presence of the
BDS President Jim
Corbet and his
wife and Scottish
Chairman John
Cowdery and
Joan Martin
commentating
his guests plus
many committee
members and
President Jimmy Corbet and Nicola Salter
Eric Mills driving Oakvale Rowan
friends. The BDS information tent was
also there staffed by our local AC and
various other willing helpers and was
kept busy all day.
Judges Barrie Luck and Joyce
Simpson worked hard all day, with
entries being a good mix of Scottish
drivers and some from over the border.
Local driver Ruth Martin with her
Dartmoor X Shetland pony made her
mark coming second to Ann Small with
her Welsh Sec C in Exercise Carts,
second to Gillian McNinch in the Novice
Class and winning Pleasure Driving. The
scores from these classes also meant
that she won the Brownlie trophy for
the most points to a Scottish Owner/
Exhibitor.
Only two classes did not run with no
one coming forwards sadly
one of those being the young
driver class, but sometimes
there seems to be no rhyme
nor reason to which classes
have the most entries year
on year.
It was good to see
the McNinch family out
and about and Gillian
McNinch drove Churchwood
Country Rose (Grey Welsh
Sec A pony) sweetly to win the
Novice Class. Winning this class
is getting to be a family tradition
father Alistair has won it three
times and mother Ella once. This
was Gillian’s first show and I am
sure we are looking at a big time
winner of the future.
Grizelda McDonald won
the Hackney Class with Gillcrest
St James and won the trophy
she donated to the show to
commemorate her famous pony Kippen
Kainsman, she narrowly missed out on
the Show Championship but had already
qualified for HOYS. She also kindly took
part in the main ring display that the
show organisers requested and that
we were pleased to provide. This was
a good shop window for
driving and allowed four
very helpful competitors
to strut their stuff in front
of a very appreciative
crowd.
John Dobson with
St Helen’s Regency
Katie had a good show
winning the Non Hackney
over 13.2, Reserve
Singles Championship
Ruth Martin Halspain Gypsy
Nicola Salter and Thistledown Eric
and Reserve Show Supreme but also
collecting a HOYS ticket as The Salter’s
Thistledown Eric (Show Supreme
Champion) had already qualified.
However Thistledown Eric (every inch
the seasoned pro) took red ribbons
for his owners in the Welsh Class,
Non Hackney under 13.2, Singles
Championship and the Show Supreme
Championship, as always elegantly
driven by Nicola Salter.
We were pleased with the numbers
who came ringside to watch
the driving and following a
post show meeting with BU
staff it is planned to hold the
Championship Class in the
main show ring next year which
will provide an even more
atmospheric championship in
front of a large crowd and also
have plans to improve the quality
of the driving ring. We had lots
of very positive and helpful
feedback and the show will be even
better next year. The showground is easy
to reach the driving ring is visible from
the lorry park there is a good size arena
and seating enabling the public to watch,
add to that the famous Scottish sun shine
and what more could you want.
Show date 2010 Saturday 31st July
don’t miss it !
Obituary | British Driving Society
Miss D M (Jo) Watts
long time member of the BDS and a well
A known farmer from Child Okeford in
Dorset, passed away on 25th January 2009 in
her 96th year. She will be greatly mourned by
many friends in Child Okeford and far beyond.
She was the third generation of her family to
farm in the village and became a successful
Shorthorn breeder, travelling all over the
country to the Royal and other shows, winning
many championships.
In her younger days she was a talented pianist and musician but gave up her career
to take on the farm when her father became ill. She was an excellent horsewoman until a
broken leg in 1963 forced her to give up riding. Not being able to contemplate life without
horses, she took up driving her horse and carriage. She also taught driving skills as well as
schooling ponies and donkeys successfully. She last drove her Cob when she was 91 but was
precluded from continuing due to a broken hip. Her Cob survives her.
Jo founded the Drewitts Donkey Stud and for many years bred, schooled and showed
the donkeys with great success. She was a member of the Donkey Breed Society and
presented the Drewitts Perpetual Trophy for Pair Driving at the Supreme Championship
Show held then at Stoneleigh. Jo will be remembered in particular for breeding and
producing Drewitts Snoopy who owned and driven by Mrs Joan Spencer went on to win
many championships. She also trained Zeboneezer for Susan Ellis who also went on to win
many donkey driving events and who also raised thousands of pounds for charity together
with his brother Zebedee.
Jo’s love of all animals, especially horses and dogs was unsurpassable. She had links
with the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth, Devon from soon after its inception. Her last two
donkeys ended their days there in recent years. Jo had a singular capacity for friendship and
will be greatly missed by many who hold her in affectionate memory.
Sue Fox 1956-2009
Our brave Sue lost
her fight against
cancer in September.
She had worked hard
with Mark sharing the
work and organisation to
build up their business
and in their free time
she made everyone
welcome at their home,
Cricketwood.
She was interested
in all horses and
donkeys. Sue was a
good judge of horse, particularly cobs and she had that
rare ability to spot a good’un. She showed her Welsh
cobs with success but she particularly enjoyed driving
and at shows watching the driving classes from the
ringside, had a keen eye for detail. One of her greatest
pleasures was a drive with Mark on the downs around
Winchester or in the Forest with a stop at the pub or
picnic with her friends of which there were many.
We will miss her sunny smile, which like her
favourite flower, the sunflower, shone out whenever
you were with her. We send our deepest sympathy to
Mark and her Mum and Dad.
Margaret
A Driver’s Tale Bernard Bradley 1934-2007
Bernard had a dream. It began with a humble
governess cart, bought before he could drive,
so, for his 55th birthday, we booked him a lesson
with Kath Hunt in Leicestershire - and then he
was hooked! The romance of the road possessed
him. And so his journey began. The governess
cart was soon replaced, but before he could live
the dream, he’d need a pony. Then we met Black
Jack, a sturdy cob. Hand picked by Claudia Bunn
especially for Bernard, Jack became Bernard’s soul
mate.
We brought him home at dusk, on a mystical,
magical journey, rumbling through the eerie
silence of a late December day in Stratford - on -
Avon, as the mist dropped low around us. They
played together whenever they could. But Bernard
was a head chef, working split shifts twenty
miles from home. His four journeys a day on the
motorway and the stress of his job, were only
relieved by the sweet anticipation of a drive with
his new found friends, Linda Cotterill and Jane
Stretton, commissioners for the BDS. Their stables
at Willoughby Waterleys,
South Leicestershire, are a Before
haven for the novice driver
and their generous, unstinting
support, was endless. So
Bernard and Jack competed
and rallied whenever they
could, a team with a mission.
Gradually, Springbridge
stables expanded, to become
the East Midland’s prime
venue for driving for the disabled - and almost
everyone else! Eventually, Bernard qualified as a
driver for the disabled, and when Springbridge
was officially opened he created a buffet fit for a
princess (Princess Anne)! When he was seventy
and still working full time, Linda showed him a
derelict Rally car, quite beyond redemption…..or
so she thought.
Slowly, Bernard began to dream. Could he
restore it, as a project for his looming retirement,
after fifty six years of hard labour? He’d learnt to
make driving whips, but this was surely beyond
his scope. Undaunted, he launched himself on
a mission. He went missing at every opportunity
and could only be found in “the shed”. Slowly, but
surely, he released each rusty nut and bolt, until
there was nothing but a heap of wood and metal.
And so he began. He decided to build a dog cart.
It would have to be oak, lined in cream. The dream
was taking shape and his retirement at seventy
one finally arrived. Life was good in “the shed” at
the stables. He was driven in pursuit of perfection.
After
Each wheel was silky smooth and the colour was
just right, just as he’d planned. Together, we chose
the leather for seat cushions, but, by then, he
knew….
In February 2007 Bernard found he had cancer.
It was such a bitter blow, but he was determined to
see his project through. He never complained or
said ,“why me?”
The cancer was untreatable and inoperable,
but still he carried on until his leg gave way,
climbing on his carriage. He was like a caged lion
that day. He accepted defeat only at the very last,
tended by angels in L.O.R.O.S., Leicester’s own
hospice.
I made a solemn promise, that his dream would
be fulfilled and the carriage finished. And so it was
- by Mr.P, carriage maker/restorer par excellence,
who promised to finish the job that Bernard had
begun. True to his word, this week, on the second
anniversary of his death, Bernard’s dream came
true and the carriage came home.
Our son, Richard, inspired by Bernard, will
keep it in Somerset, where
he will learn to drive like
his father. Jack survives,
still driving the disabled at
Springbridge, a testament
to Bernard’s loving care and
devotion.
The second Berkshire Trec which held on 2nd
August attracted fewer entries this year. There
were sixteen entrants with fourteen forward
and although the number of turnouts was
down the standard of driving was, overall, very
good. A modified and more demanding series
of tasks were set to test the competitors, all of
whom enjoyed the experience. Last year’s top
scorers dominated the leader board again. It
is encouraging to note that there were new
faces at the Great Park Drive which was held in
Windsor Park on August Bank Holiday Sunday
which helped to maintain the usual level of
entrants. The park is a complex of farms,
forest, deer pasture and a village all of which
offer opportunities for both on, and off road
driving. A sunny day with a slight cooling
wind made ideal driving conditions which were
appreciated by all.
We were blessed with reasonable weather after a lot of rain for the Trec on 6 October
at Dalemain. Sadly there were only four turnouts and once again none from the
The “TREC” dawned slightly damp. We had a few withdrawals but the majority
battled though the rain. All phases were completed. Lots of thanks go to; Moyanna
Berryman our presentation judge, Tracey Ball for overseeing the skills section and
Bryony Maunder who really drew the short straw to be the overall scorer assisted by
The Treolwyn Drive and BBQ
Bob in his Fenix 4 wheeled disabled vehicle
starting to take on an autumnal
look. We are so fortunate to be
able to make this one of our last drives of the year. A fantastic turnout of 18, some
travelling from almost the other side of the County.
RDA Chiverton Riding and Driving Group have spent the summer enjoying the
Fenix vehicle purchased with help from funds raised at the BDS Dinner at Hinkley.
With winter fast approaching we have a few social gatherings left to enjoy starting
with the estates drive at Lanhydrock. Our Annual Party-time Dinner and hopefully
months starting on November 14th. Plans for 2010 will start at our General Meeting
On Sunday 27th September six turnouts enjoyed a six mile drive from Danbury
Common. I think the two Australian ladies who accompanied Belinda Hull were
suitably impressed by this beautiful part of Essex
The village of Canewdon was treated to a real spectacle on Sunday 18th October
when Nicky Cook of Cook’s Carriages invited fellow coaching enthusiasts to join
him for a drive from his yard in Hockley to the Anchor Public House in Canewdon.
Five coaches with teams of Fresians and Gelderlanders filled the car park where the
landlord and landlady provided a splendid spread for the passengers (and half the
village who came out to see what all the fuss was about!)
Rachael Edwards and Barry McCooey are Gloucestershire members and they got
married in the summer - their horse Victor is part of the team of horses driven by
Tony Seller and the North Cotswold Hunt supplied the grooms and Glyn Williams
Despite the weather we have had a
packed summer in Herefordshire, the
HDDG provided a wide and varied
programme of events, meetings and
rallies to keep us all busy. The only truly
BDS event was a BDS Trec run on 5th
September courtesy of Tony and Paddy
Marris in Stoke Bliss.
What a great day we only ended up
with five of the eight entries for one
reason or another but the weather was
kind to us. Sarah Wildy was our Judge
Nick Jones with Danny doing his dressage test
for the day and all the entries had
made supreme efforts and turned
out beautifully. Sarah took her time
with the presentation and inspected
harness, vehicle, whip, groom and
spares thoroughly, everyone passed
this section with flying colours with
Nick Jones’ First Aid kit being singled
out for particular praise.
The Skills section was simple but
Helen Mann at the Trec day
testing and everyone got round with
no spills. The timed walk and trot
produced surprisingly uniform results with the exception of a certain section A
pony from Wales who completed the trot section in half the time of everyone else.
The drive was all off road and the weather had been kind so it was only wet in a few
places. All entrants completed the course and went on to the Dressage phase. Our
eventual winners were Jane and Suzy Allcoat with their Section C pony, Merlin.
They won both the Trec and Dressage and were awarded the first BDS Herefordshire
Trec Cup.
Pat Dutson with Kerrie doing
the timed trot phase
First a big thank you to Kathy Spencer and her husband Jeremy for hosting a well
attended fun-filled evening, when they shared photos and their memories of their
exciting sailing trip around a large part of the world. They left their boat and flew
home from Trinidad in May for their daughter’s wedding and will resume their
adventures at the end of October.
Their boat is 36 feet long and they have battled 20 foot high waves in the Atlantic
successfully, so far. The next part of their journey will take a leisurely two years or
so, and this will allow plenty of time to enjoy the many islands en route. The longest
ocean crossing ahead of them this time will be from the Galapagos to the Marquesas
and these 3000 miles will take about 30 days. That’s a very long time for two very
brave people to be alone at sea. We wish them a safe journey and look forward to our
next social evening together.
Thank you to Dave and Steph for hosting a Bank Holiday weekend gathering, and
we look forward to more members coming forward with ideas of future events.
Well done to Mike Moores, Jill Pickup, Carol Parker, and Lesley Wigley for passing the
Road Driving Test and well done to Alison Townsend for passing both the Road Driving
Assessment and the Preliminary level BDS Proficiency test:) Dave and Steph will be
having practice days on Saturdays. Contact them for details 01704 897984.
The Treasure Hunt I hosted in September was a good opportunity to catch up with
friends and have fun with our turnouts. Champion Fell pony Magic was driven by
Colin Pass with Beverly Johnson as groom and Shetland Blackberry was driven by
myself. All participants won a chocolate prize.
Some exciting news about a very well known and well liked carriage driving
personality, Martin Johnson has married Kip Linsayat her farm in Vermont on 12th
August. Kip is a keen carriage driver and I am awaiting a horsey photo of the happy
couple to attach. He has always been a great supporter of the BDS and joined in
with many of our Lancashire events. He will be much missed, but we wish them
every happiness.
Sue Day has kindly agreed to talk to BDS members about horse canal boating; date
to be confirmed. We are hoping to meet up with Sue on her travels and see the
horses in action. Please contact me for more details. Telephone 01772 423630
Monday 28th December – Official Boxing day drive with a choice of routes
varying in length and ideal for the experienced driver and fit horse as well as the less
experienced drivers with less fit or older horses starting at my yard. Plenty of room
to park your horse box and hot mulled wine and mince pies to conclude...mmmmm.
Meet at 11am, telephone me for further details; 01772 423630
Once again our Christmas meal will be at the Italian Orchard in Broughton, near
Preston and will be on the first Saturday in December 10th. This will be an ideal
time to relax and enjoy stories of the years carriage driving experiences. Please
telephone me for details and to book your place.
The Musical Drive Team have
gone from strength to strength
with Main ring performances at
Sandringham Game and Country
Fair on 12th & 13th September,
raising a further £261.00 for
the Air Ambulance. We have
been invited to perform at
Newark Showground on 7th/8th
November at a Tractor and Rare
Breeds Show, where we will also be
able to promote the BDS to the
public showing off our carriages
and ponies in an indoor barn (probably
very necessary in November). We have
also been invited back to the CLA
Game Fair and Newark County Show in
2010. Thank you to the team members
who have worked so hard to make the
Musical Drive so successful.
A Social and Drive was held on the
8th/9th August at Harlaxton. We
arrived on the Saturday at 4 p.m. for a
bar-b-que and the landower’s partner
brought out chips and the evening went
Anna Mann at Sandringham Game Fair
Helen and Molly Faulkner at
Sandringham Game Fair Musical Display
with a bang including a firework display at Belvoir Castle. Sunday arrived and seven
turnouts plus Galli being ridden out for the first time after being broken came across
50 vintage motorbikes, not a problem!! We had lunch and then the obstacles and
games which was won by Duncan Seth-
Smith with Rambo.
Although shows held in Lincolnshire were
down in numbers they have been very
successful. Lincolnshire rosettes for the
best Lincolnshire drivers were presented
at the BDS Yorks & Notts Show at
Danethorpe.
September 26th/27th saw us at Asgarby,
Sheenagh and Sue at Harlaxton Fun Day the Saturday being mine and Kathleen’s
Wedding Anniversary. We arrived to be
surprised by the members putting on a meal for us in a barn, of beef stroganoff and
rice followed by birthday cake as the following day was our daughter Helen and
Sarah Braybrook’s birthday. This was followed by a bonfire.
Sunday we harnessed up ponies for a Trec driving in the beautiful Lincolnshire
countryside returning for a lunch of jacket potatoes and salad before completing the
obstacles in the afternoon. Carole Davenport won the small ponies and Sue Lawson
the horse. Eight turnouts took part.
30th September – seven members passed their road Driving Test, and three
Wato with Clare Bourne their examiner.
7th/8th November – Musical Drive at Newark Showground
20th December – Christmas Drive Party to be held at Elms Farm, Caythorpe.
On 23rd August we were very
fortunate to once again be asked
to the village of Hempnall for a
drive. The event started this year
on a field very close to the home
of Mr John Ellis who had sorted
out along with Miss Jenny Sewell,
a lovely route around the field
tracks and highways around the
surrounding villages.
We were blessed yet again with great
weather and also five turnouts for
the long run and two for the shorter
one. All attending enjoyed the drive.
Afterwards we were spoiled by Jenny
and her band of helpers to a splendid
lunch. Many thanks to all those who
provided the food and helped in
serving. All in all a very good day.
Sunday 30th August we ventured to Forest
Edge Equestrian Centre for our very first BDS
Trec. We were aided by Linda Swain who
graciously gave up her time to come and show
how to run this fun event. 10
entries were submitted although
only eight actually took part. All
enjoyed themselves even though
there was an overturned vehicle on
the drive, thankfully nobody was
hurt and the pony was ok.
Sunday 20th September, Ashby St
Mary once again hosted a drive at
the Home of Mr & Mrs C Kemp.
Six turnouts arrived and were
allocated their preferred routes. Safety
vehicles were present as always. After
the drive all present enjoyed a lunch
provided by Mrs P Cooke and her
numerous helpers, many thanks to
them as well.
In the afternoon all had great fun
attempting the cones course I
had laid out for them. Yes, even
your Area Commissioner drove
the course to prove it was possible
ha ha!
Following this we adjourned finally
for afternoon tea and presentation of
rosettes.
Date for the diary
Saturday 21st November – Quiz night at Hempnall Mill Centre 7 till 11pm. Bring
a plate of food to share. There will be a raffle.
Area News | British Driving Society
Northumberland & Durham
Iam the BHS county access officer for Northumberland. I work to improve the
condition and the extent of the network available to both the riders and drivers of
horses and ponies. Northumberland County Council is one of the more go ahead
local highway authorities with respect to adding historic routes to the definitive map
and in identifying where major repairs are needed. But like other local authorities,
their resources are limited and budgets are inclined to be cut each year.
The byway open to all traffic (BOAT) network is very limited, being mainly short
sections leading to either a dead end or a path of lower status. The only real network
is in and around Slaley Forest, south of Hexham. It had been subject to overuse
by MPVs so parts of it are currently impassable for others. A major consultation is
going on at present (autumn 2009) to determine how it should be managed in the
future. I have argued for more repair work so that all the BOATs are suitable for
horse drawn vehicles as well as horse riders. In order to protect these new surfaces
from further damage, I have supported a TRO (traffic regulation order) for 4x4
vehicles due to their weight. Should the order be made, there has to be some way of
preventing their entry. A barrier with a by-pass for horse riders would still prevent
HDVs so I have asked that the Kent Carriage Gap is used wherever one of these
paths meets the tarmac road. If you are not familiar with the design and use of
these, google ‘Kent Carriage Gap’ and you will see that they are quite widely used
in southern England. Unclassified county roads (UCRs), a number of which do
not have a tarmac surface, also provide routes away from busy traffic for a carriage
driver. Some of these are suitable to use and provide attractive links between minor
tarmac roads. But a significant number are out of repair, especially if they cross
rivers. These are now shown on the recent OS Explorer maps with large green
dots. If you intend to use one for the first time, I suggest that you contact me about
its condition or go out on foot to check for yourself. I collecting information on
them so please let me know if you find one that is ‘out of repair’. As long as we let
NCC know that we want to use it, but can’t because of its condition, they can not
claim at a later date that it is not needed.
Restricted Byways (RBs), which are available for drivers of horses and ponies but
not to mpvs, are increasing in number in Northumberland. Some of them are long
grass tracks over open hill country. These are historic horse and cart routes used in
previous centuries. A list of those recently legally confirmed will appear on BHS
Northumberland’s page on Facebook very soon. I suggest that you contact me
before venturing out onto any of them as their condition is very variable and some
would not be safe to use until further repair work is done.
In the meantime there is an excellent network of tarmac bridleways on the
Otterburn Training Area (MoD). These cross wonderful open country and provide
many miles of safe driving with improved cattle grid gates as long as you contact the
MoD in advance to get permission from Range Control to use the bridleways and to
ensure that you plan to go there when the heavy artillery are not practicing! Look at
www.otterburnranges.co.uk for details.
BDS member Diane Collacott (AB Whip)
accompanied two disabled drivers from Abingdon
RDA to the Unicorn Trust at Stow on the Wold
over the weekend of October 4th and 5th to
take part in a training weekend organized by the
Carriage Driving Sports Group for Drivers with
Disabilities founded by Margaret Brockie. This
course was open to disabled drivers bringing their
own turnouts but also to RDA groups. Driver
ability ranged from complete beginners to World
team Para drivers Lindsey Tyas, Margaret Lupton
Lorraine and Dianne drive Speckles and Heather Clarke. Training was given in
Dressage, Cones and Obstacle driving by Rachel
Stevens, Sara Howe and Chris van Reen. A thoroughly enjoyable time was had by
all with everyone learning something new and eagerly looking forward to the next
training weekend to be held in the Spring 2010. Some of the Oxfordshire BDS
joined the Berkshire group on 27th September for the rescheduled Ashewarren drive.
The day was fine and everyone had an excellent day out.
Our annual “Start the Year” dinner will be held at
Wantage Masonic Hall on February 20th.
Mr Danny Kendle, head coachman of the
Household Cavalry will join us for dinner and
give a talk afterwards.
A pre-Christmas get-together at a suitable
hostelry is being organised and details will follow.
Peter and Gaye Kyle went to Towerlands to be
spectators at “Driving Towerlands”. The two
days were very well organised and the turnouts
Danielle, Dianne and Speckles
were exquisite. The Hackney driving was fast and
exciting, as was the scurrying. Fortunately Susan
Ellis was also there and they benefitted from her vast knowledge of driving. If you
have not been to this before it is thoroughly recommended.
A General meeting will be organised for the New Year at which such items as drives,
events and teaching will be discussed. A good attendance should ensure a good
programme for 2010.
I am sorry to lose AACs Elaine McCarthy, who has resigned owing to pressure of
working in London, and David Baker who has also taken on a new career. Elaine
and David have arranged training days and courses for BDS Certificates during the
past 3 years also running BDS Trec and Fun days at Blandings Farm and a display
followed by classes at the Cambridge Show. Their energy spent in the Cambridge
area will be sorely missed. I would welcome some help from members in Cambs/
Hunt who would like to take on an AAC role and promote ideas of their own.
Our Website is now being run by Duncan Seth-Smith, any news items, photos, for
4th May – Woodbridge Show driving classes, becoming increasingly popular were
well supported by members.
17th May – The EA Area Show saw an increase in Private Driving entries especially
in the Style & Performance. Jessie Bowling with Tilly Trotter coming a close second
to Sallie Walrond with Murvy Dunhill. The five entries forward were stunning. Full
results and report in H&H 28th May 2009.
30th May – BDS drive at Euston by invitation of EACDG. Six members drove the
Marathon course through the lovely parkland seeing Red and Fallow deer on route.
Unfortunately only one tried the 17 gate Cones course on offer after lunch, Winston
going clear, but over time. Liz Hourd had to cancel the “Long Distance” routes
owing to lack of interest.
31st May – Cambridge Show. Eight turnouts private/exercise attended this new
class at Wimpole Hall and all received a Red Rover rosette for the show drive.
27/28 June – Driving Trials at Sandringham some members stewarded for the
National and/or the EACDG event. It was very exciting.
5th July – The Regional Charity Drive in Thetford Forest followed a lovely route led
by Linda. Monies raised went to the John Grant Special Needs School in Norfolk.
11th July – Scurry Competition at Tendring Show was enjoyed by the cheering
public with the Snow family in the first four places. (Well they do come from
Essex!)
26th July – BDS Concours d’Attelage de Tradition at Helmingham Hall.
9th August – BDS Trec at Blandings. Good fun and super skills with an off road
drive.
20th September – BDS drive at Wantisden Hall Farms. Eight members enjoyed
two lovely routes through farmland and an ancient Oak Plantation seeing Red and
Fallow deer. Tea and delicious cakes followed, made by organiser Vanessa Francis.
27th September – Easton Farm Park. Traditional Drive and Fun day. Only one
Traditional vehicle but all nine members were
very smartly turned out, driving to Cretingham
Bell for drinks before returning to Easton for
some cone driving before the communal lunch.
A relaxed day in the sunshine. Congratulations
Our Surrey Area Show in July was again blessed with good weather. The entries were
good overall and it was encouraging to see some new members attending this year.
Congratulations to our Show Champion, Terri Wade, driving Fronarth Golden Gazza.
Thanks must go to all our wonderful stewards and helpers who make the day run so
smoothly and a special mention for the Raindle family who assist in so many ways.
We had a lovely sunny afternoon in August for our first Horsedrawn Barge
excursion. Setting off from Godalming on the Wey Navigation Canal, this was a
leisurely afternoon trip which reminded us of how tranquil life can be. Our thanks
to Gail Brownrigg for organising this event, we hope to repeat it again next year.
Our drive out from Oakwoodhill went well. Although the number of turnouts was
very disappointing, it did not deter organiser Margaret Evans who provided the food
for us all and also drove her pair on the drive.
With winter approaching it’s time to think about our now annual ‘Fish & Chip’
supper evening! This year we thought we would have a complete change and hold
a Quiz Night. There will be a large variety of questions including an equestrian
section. Each table of 4 to 6 people will form a team. Why not bring your friends
well as winning the Supreme at Towerlands. Other members all had good results in
many different classes with Kate West having two seconds and a third with a Dales
pony and an Exmoor from Gary Dockings yard, Lesley Hurd a third and a fifth
with her novice Sec D Winmark Archie, Jimmy Hyatt a second in the trade class
and pairs with his big Freisians, and sponsor Jeff Osborne coming close three times
to ringing the bell but only succeeding in monopolising the 2nd place blue rosettes.
Joanna Hartland and her lovely pair again took that title. Minta also had success
with a junior whip, Sophie Walls who she has taken under her wing and in her first
season ended second in the class. It seems that if a West Sussex member doesn’t win
the class, one comes second!! Four days later Minta and George went on to claim the
real big prize of the year winning the Horse of the Year title at Birmingham. Again
West Sussex members took up five of the qualifying spots but only Minta figured in
the final shakeup.
For showing and show driving results prove that no other county can come close
to the quality and strength in depth of West Sussex and I am sure that if we had
a county competition West Sussex would come out on top in both Private Driving
and Trade classes.
Hopefully later this year we will have some sort of Xmas bash and I will let members
know as soon as we can arrange a venue. Early next year we have been offered the
facilities of Jeff Osborne’s grounds for a Trec, and we will be liasing with Jeff as to a
suitable date. Having had the chance to view Jeff’s newly laid tracks in his woodland
this will hopefully make for a stunning venue for this event. We are in contact with
a local estate about the possibility of a concours drive in the spring and this will
hopefully give all a chance to air your good clothes and harness prior to the season
starting for real and with all private tracks a safe event for novices and juniors to
participate.
If anyone would like to let me know of their intentions about attending any event
please contact me so we can judge numbers.
With the summer now over we have dark nights and time to reflect on our past
driving activties - mine have included the Royal Show, Fillongley show, road driving
assessments, WATOs, driving skills, BDS Treks and drives followed by a BBQ.
The members, organisers and the commissioners have enjoyed them all. Peter Munt
competed at the Royal Show with his team of greys to a roof seat break and finished
in the ribbons. Well done to the Munt family.
The Fillongleyshow was well attended although we had a few problems such as steam
engines, not enough parking, public close to horses etc. The drivers handled it well.
There were two Junior whips forward, it would be nice to have a few more. The Trek
and skills test that Olive organized were enjoyed by all, the day finished with tea and
refreshments, once again many thanks to Olive and her helpers. I hope to include
more results and news in next issue, safe driving to you all.
Any helpers for the above events are very welcome or if you are able to host a drive
on any of the vacant dates above please contact either Joyce or myself.
Area News
The last of the Area’s Shows has taken
place, and what a great finish to the
year with the sun shining and great
going. Please note that next year there
will be a new date for the Area Summer
Show (incorporating the Festival of
Carriage Driving). It will be held on
the weekend of July 17 & 18. With
affiliated Hackneys only on the Saturday
afternoon. Hopefully this will avoid
clashes with other shows and also spread
our Wiltshire Shows more evenly over
the summer period.
There have been several drives including
several evening drives with a mid way
stop at a local pub, and another good
turnout for the late summer drive
on the Ridgeway. In all, 13 turnouts
tackled the downland Drive, 98% of
which is off road with long and short
routes on offer, afterwards everyone
gathered together for a big picnic in the
sunshine. This particular drive is mostly
on Restricted Byways however these are
quite badly overgrown in places which
caused a certain amount of amusement,
just proves that we need to use them
more often!
Plans are already afoot for next year, new
venues for drives would be particularly
welcome, if you cannot do one yourself
perhaps you know a local landowner
that has parking that we could approach.
Please contact Hazel or Joyce if you are
able to host a new venue.
The exciting news for next year is that there will be another Regional Training day
on March 28th at the Unicorn Centre. There will be no less than three tutors on site
so that we can utilise the facilities to the maximum, this will mean that we can also
provide a limited number of 1:1 training sessions designed especially for YOU. This
will be an additional cost to the main training programme, so if you are looking for
an ideal Christmas present then please contact for further details.
It is hoped to have a further Road driving Test before the end of December but it
will very much depend on numbers, to take advantage of the grant that has been
kindly given by the Salisbury Bursary it is important that you make contact straight
away. There needs to be a reasonable number to make a worthwhile event. It has
been provisionally arranged for mid November but this may not now be possible
unless contact is made straight away.
On a more personal note - thank you to all those who so kindly sent cards and
messages following the loss of my beloved pony Mackintosh.
For further information on any of the above contact Hazel Woodbridge on 01793
A small group has enjoyed the subsidised training this summer which I organised for
our members with Sarah Wildy LHHI. We have had 10 sessions of 3 hours each on
summer evenings about every fortnight, beginning at the end of April. I have tried,
but in the main failed, to interest several of our local pony clubs in carriage driving.
The Ludlow HPC was interested and members of the Wolverley Club helped me
with two demonstration days at the pony club summer camps.
We held our Young Drivers Camp this summer from 10th to the 13th August with
the help of the Wolverley Club, notably Tony and Gill Bache and Tony and Carole
Gregory, and Sarah Wildy, this was open to adults as well as we had space. Most of
the participants took BDS exams and the road driving assessment at the end of the
camp and were all successful.
Wendy Martin has offered to take a group of members any time by arrangement on
her local TROT drive at Wick. Please telephone her on 01386 556382.
Belinda James will organise a day driving on the Malvern hills, telephone 01684
Weekly drives (20 miles, horses must be very fit) are organised by John Redfern and
Ivan Meredith tel. 01299 23304. Please telephone the organiser a week beforehand if
you would like to join the drives.
The Wolverley DDC have an excellent programme of varying events and
training and occasional drives on a Tuesday. See their website for details www.
The Hereford DDG also have a first rate programme, new members always
welcome, telephone the secretary Katja Jones 01497 821009 or see their website,
The Three Counties Show was held on June 21st, sadly the same day as the BDS
show at Smith’s Lawn. Belinda James and Lester Dagge again organised the program
together with the Wolverley club and it was very exciting again this year. Lots of
classes for all and with a new event to demonstrate to the general public the indoor
driving trials.
Our newsletters are published in the BDS news and also on our website.
Please remember that if you are a beginner or no longer driving you are always more
than welcome to attend on foot either as a spectator or as a steward or helper at
BDS events and club events at local or national level, we are a very friendly group
Visit to Red House Stables 15th August
Manx Harness and BDS member Margot Dahn and husband Arne spent a fabulous
week at Caroline and Peter Dale-Leech’s Red House Stables. Margot’s three day
tuition with Caroline had been a 50th birthday present from husband and very
good friend Jan! On the Sunday of arrival Peter took them on a scenic drive with
one of the pairs around Matlock, then followed the three days tuition with various
combinations. An extra surprise, organised by Caroline, was an evening drive out
with the local club, which left from Mr Robert Andrews’ home at Tidesdale on
Wednesday evening. A truly beautiful summer’s evening going through stunning
countryside. On our return to Mr Andrews’ home the Derbyshire hospitality shone
through yet again with an evening BBQ and buffet and a home made gateaux! The
whole week was a truly memorable experience with “the Girls” and Peter! making us
most welcome and really home from home. Thanks to all!
Drive from Ballacaley, Sulby – Manx Harness club and BDS members enjoyed
a 12.5 mile invitation drive out from Mr Phil Plant’s home at Ballacaley, Sulby on
the 13th September. The route was planned by Phil, with the assistance of Anne
Dahn, which took in the Sulby Claddaghs, Ballaugh Curraghs and B roads around
Sulby, St Judes and Sandy Gate, also including a short distance along disused railway
track. Phil, a disabled private driver, also took part. Five turnouts enjoyed the warm
afternoon’s drive followed by a picnic on their return.
Manx Master held 20th September – Held at Ballacorey Equestrian Centre,
Andreas, by kind permission of Mrs Catriona Morrey. This three phase event was
run in glorious autumnal sunshine and supported by five turnouts. These included
competitors Libby Priest (horse pair) and Linda Christian (single horse) who have
both just returned from the UK after a successful season in their respective National
BHDTA classes. Overall winner, Ken Corlett with able groom, John Watterson,
narrowly pipped last year’s winner, Patti Squires (groom, Ed Hill) with Linda
Christian in third place. The final scoring being very marginal indeed. Unfortunately
pony pairs whip, Julie Clarke with groom Hugh McCanney had a turnover in
obstacle 5 both unscathed but forced to retire. Stewards and spectators enjoyed a ‘fast
moving’ day with plenty of skill and competitiveness seen. The Committee wish to
thank all those who assisted both in the building of the course etc. and the stewards
and the time keepers on the day.
Cake and Wine Drive held Sun 27th September – Again another sunny autumnal
day! Members met at Barnell Lane, Patrick with kind permission of Mr David
Anderson MHK, several turnouts enjoyed the breezy but mild weather. The drive
took whips, grooms and passengers through Peel, out to Poortown, down through
Tynwald Mills and back to Patrick via St Johns. The route covered both main roads
and single track lanes through beautiful countryside and all turnouts wore their hiviz
safety and reflective gear. On return to Barnell, members gathered and thoroughly
enjoyed the home-made cakes provided by members and their families, with a glass
of wine to toast the successful end of season drive. Apologies to all who gathered, the
photographer forgot her camera!
Our area show was well attended and Roger Jacobs was a welcome change of judge as
none of the whips had driven under him before. Fiona Paxton was show champion
driving R.Youngs’ Parkhurst Jubilation with Margaret Honeybourne (myself) as
reserve champion driving Rushmoor Dark Lady. Unfortunately Fiona underwent
a knee operation shortly afterwards and was unable to go to Towerlands to the
qualifiers. I took two of my Shetland ponies all the way to the Shetland Isles for
the Shetland breed show. I also took a junior whip with me, she drove the pair very
well and was second in a large class. Her mother came too and my friend drove us.
It was a great experience and we were away for nine days altogether. Thanks to AC
Sheila McNeill who we stayed with outside Glasgow on our way up. She was so
welcoming and we will never forget her kindness and lovely meals. Also thanks to
AC Pat Calderbank who offered to put us up on the way back but a change of plan
meant we did not meet her. The ponies travelled really well and I am sure they were
glad to get back out in the field. Several BDS members from the Island were able
to drive or groom at the New Forest driving week. What fabulous weather we had.
Thanks to Roger and Sue Page for their hospitality. Now that the showing season is
Lanni from Scotland had a marathon
job of judging seventeen classes
as well as four Championships on
Sunday. The In-hand Championship
going to Rachelle Bownes and
Hermes as well as the Pony
Championship and the Reserve
Supreme to Beverley Le Marquand’s
pair of Welsh Section A ponies driven
Lurtom Gold Spark and Julie Chalker
to a dogcart, this combination have
won all three show Championships this year. The One the Move Championship went
to Deen Bownes’ Laurtom Gold Spark reserve Lisa Fenlon’s Rangeview Riddle, the
Horse Championship went to Margaret Robinson’s Hackney Gemma and reserve
Vincent Obbard’s Percy driven to a Jersey Van.
It is encouraging to see several new ponies on the scene, Ivor Barette competed with
his warm-bloods driven to a roof seat brake which is always a impressive sight.
The three rounds of “Skilled Driver of the Year” competitions are also concluded
with Felicity Rabet (senior), Zoe Gallichan (novice max: points), and Carl Gallichan
in a nail biting finish beating Ellie Carre by one point for the juniors.
The Le Trec competition runs along the lines of the French version with three
Presentation judges and a Routier of 9 ½ K with six “difficulties” along the route
which varied from driving through streamers, eating a cake whilst horse is standing
on a carpet as well as the rein-back box and the drink stand, some confusion and
hilarity arose on the course as some took a wrong turn and were meeting up with
others going in the opposite direction! Part of the course is on a public Park, arrows
may have mischievously been turned. After a leisurely lunch a testing cones course
saw only one competitor within the time. In the evening everyone gathered for a
meal and presentation of prizes and goodie bags to all eleven competitors.
Saturday Sept 5th – the Jersey Teams travel to Guernsey for the return match of
skilled driving. Felicity Rabet, team Captain for the seniors, and Ellie Carre for the
juniors, who has had a meteoric rise in her first year of driving will be guided by her
mentor Emma Le Marquand who is also in the senior team. Carl will drive twice to
make up the numbers as other juniors were away at the time of qualifying.
We had our Trec on 24th May with the sun shining on us, 15 turnouts participated.
They started off with a harness and carriage check by Ken Ruthven, marks were
given and this went towards their overall scores at the end. With a choice of two
routes, a short and long route for the drive and finishing back into the field to have
a go at 5 disciplines. Once all were home safe and well the scores were counted while
everyone had lunch and the results were called. Catriona presented the rosettes and
thanked everyone for coming and the stewards and helpers throughout the setting
up etc and thanked the forestry commission who allowed us access to the routes for
our drive and to the field owner were the disciplines were set up.
The Racks Show 10 drivers and turnouts took part on 4th June hosted by Millar
and Margaret Paterson. The weather was once again good to us and stayed dry for
the evening. Margaret Paterson had also set up a handy pony course and “have a go
cones” for anyone wishing to drive after the showing had finished. Everyone was
invited back to the house for a bite to eat and a cuppa. A very big thank you goes to
Margaret and Millar for their hospitality and organising the event. Thank you also
go to the judges Alec Hogg and Pat Gillan and their assistants. The full results are on
our web page.
Our June evening drive was held at Englishtown Cumbria near Longtown on 23rd.
Hosted by James and Doreen Taylor 6 drivers enjoyed a wonderful drive over 7 miles
starting and finishing on the farm.
25 members and friends enjoyed a Buffy supper eating alfresco in the brilliant
evening sunshine, Drivers received a drive rosette and Catriona presented Mr and
Mrs Taylors with a small gift and thanked them for the great venue.
Flowden’s Evening drive on July 21st was showered with thunder storms and
lightning but that didn’t stop 5 drivers going out regardless, coming back to dry off
with a warm welcome from Bob and Barbara Patterson and the BBQ was on for a
hot supper. Only Liz and Brian Gaits braved it to do the full 7.5 miles, well done.
Drivers received rosettes at the end of the evening.
On 18th August Zan and Joe Kirk hosted our Evening drive at Low Kirkbride
in July which was once again dampened by the weather earlier in the day when
three drivers went on the 7.5 mile route around the area. Members were joined by
John Cowdrey our Scottish Chairman for a very pleasant social that Zan and Joe
organised, thank you to them and their family for the warm welcome.
Venture Drive was held on Sunday 6th Septermber, we held our second Venture
Drive at Dinwoodie Lodge in Lockerbie. Once again Margaret Rogan and Debbie
Findley co-organized this event for the BDS although this year we shared with
DGHD who supplied us with the necessary signs etc. There were 15 entries of
which 7 did the long route of 19.5km and 8 doing the shorter 9km. The route was
quite testing through Auchanrodden forest and Jardine Hall Estate. Many thanks
to the land owners who let us cross their land. Audrey and Ginger Taylor were once
again our vet checkers and with years of endurance ride experience they did their
excellent best. The horses were checked at the start, half way and at the end. This
gave them a rating of gold, silver, bronze or standard. We had 3 disabled drivers
from the Annandale and Eskdale RDA Carriage Driving Group join in this year. Not
only did they compete but two of them were 1st and 2nd in the short route. Special
thanks also goes to Drew Douglas who stepped in at short notice to TD the event
and to Millar Patterson who stepped in to do the harness and safety checks to ensure
all were safe to compete. Although we were damp everyone had a good day.
In spite of the dreadful summer that we have just had, none of our plans were
disrupted which was good. Our drive-outs all went ahead as planned and were well
supported by the members – thank you.
Our first evening drive on Tuesday 19th May, due to be held at Craigshaws had
to be changed to Flowden’s. Two pairs and 6 single turnouts drove a 7 mile route
including Springkell Estate. A superb supper was provided by members and enjoyed
by all. A thank you presentation was made to Bob and Barbara Patterson for the
Although the main Show at Wheatcroft Farm was cancelled because of the weather,
the driving classes of the Dumfries and Galloway Horse Show went ahead at
Barstobrick on Sunday August 23rd. Thanks to Jean Clarkson and her team of
helpers one of the best ever shows took place. The quality of the turnouts, in all the
classes was exceptional. Everyone had made the greatest of efforts to impress the
judge, Robert Robertson, who on more than one occasion had difficulty in making
his placements.
In the Private Driving, Ken Ruthven, driving Sandyford Reagen, came first, with
Olive Lyn second, with Darkie, and Jean Clarkson and Geraldo were placed third.
Olive Lyn was awarded the Country Vehicle Trophy. In the Exercise Vehicle class,
Diane Polding and Peter triumphed with Janette Watson and Dollar second,
Justine Hunter and Toffee third, and Kendal Young and Small person fourth. The
most heartening part of the day was the turnout of four youngsters for the Junior
Diane Polding driving Peter, for coming top of the
points table in the Chairman’s Cup which is for
exercise vehicles. At the time of writing, Diane is
25 points ahead of her nearest rival and is unlikely
to be caught. Coming first out of 32 drivers, is no
mean achievement and reflects all the hard work
and dedication of Diane and groom and husband Brendan. Although we can take
no credit for their success, we can share some of the pride that as one of the smallest
BDS memberships in Scotland, we have such a winning team in our midst.
It is with sadness that I report the death of Dr. John Calvert. Dr. John, was an active
member of the Galloway BDS and the Treasurer of the Wigtownshire Driving Club.
He will also be remembered by many of those who attended the Castle Kennedy
Driving Trials, where he served on the organising committee and was the Health
and Safety Officer of the event, amongst other things. In the Winter he hunted both
locally and further afield. John’s other passion in life, after horses, was his work with
the The Order of St.John. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and we
offer our sympathy to his family.
Finally, this is the last contribution that I will be making to the newsletter as I am
standing down as Area Commissioner. I have enjoyed my three years and I hope that
my successor is as fortunate.
Lothian and Borders have had quite a busy summer. Since the summer we have been
quite quiet. I am going to organise a social evening when we can discuss what we
would like to do over the winter. Last winter I organised a few indoor events which
were good and people who came along enjoyed this. We did a small dressage test and
2 lots of cones. I will be organising some more of these during the winter (so we can
keep ticking over ) It was a good social event so we could have a good chat. During
the summer two of our area drivers have done very well. Faith Szczuka competed
for Great Britain in the combined pony driving trials and did well. Also Grizelda
MacDonald had qualified for Horse of the Year show so good luck to her.
Keep looking at the web page and I will have all the information on there about the
things that are going on during the Winter.
Our club events are going very well now and the weather for most of the season has
been kind to us.
Innes House Drive Sunday 12th July – A drive organised by Anne MacDonald
was attended by 5 of our members, unfortunately the weather was very wet, but as
usual the route and views overlooking the Moray Firth more than made up for the
disappointing rain.
Epona Cup Grass Roots Event, Hughton 26th July – Setting us up for the
weekend, we held a BBQ with a little twist on the Saturday evening. A couple of
our members, Jenny Williams and Andy Baker secretly married earlier this year, so
we devised a ‘mock’ wedding for them with Maureen Clyne acting as ‘Best Man’,
Myself (Jack Clyne) acting as ‘Bridesmaid’, Jan Burnett as ‘Father of the Bride’ and
Edd Haines disguised in his greyhounds ‘Dog Collar’ as the ‘Vicar’. There were
full celebrations with the bride and groom taking everything in good spirit to the
enjoyment and amusement of the rest of our members. Leading to more serious
things, the event was well attended with two of our Junior Drivers making very
good scores throughout the day, thus applying the pressure on our more experienced
drivers. Amanda Love was in second place following the dressage, falling behind 1st
place leader, her elder sister Catriona by just one point. Final scores for the day: 1st
Carolyn Love, 2nd Colin Whitiear, 3rd Edd Haines.
The Anthea Greenlees Junior Scholarship, Sun 2nd August – This year we were
able to nominate three of our Junior Drivers; Susie Love, Amanda Love and Georgie
Platt to take part in the scholarship day at West Newton. The girls were made very
welcome and quickly put at ease by everyone involved in organising the day. They
all had a fantastic time, having the opportunity to learn more about carriage driving
and then having the pleasure of driving three lovely turnouts. At the end of the day
Georgia came away with 1st place and Susie 3rd. Amanda not being left out, took
home a lovely rosette and certificate for all her effort. It just remains for me to wish
them all good luck, safe and happy driving as they are the future ambassadors of our
sport.
Scotsburn Grass Roots Event, Ross shire, 23rd September – Our final grass roots
event was another success with 4 members of the Love family competing and 2
newcomers along with the old faithful, we had an excellent day. Catriona Love came
1st in Dressage, Edd Haines took 1st place in driving Cones, Carolyn Love finishing
1st overall ending the Season on a happy note.
NORTH OF SCOTLAND - Grampian
The Grampian section of the North of Scotland branch has provided its members
with a varied series of events from April through into the Autumn. In April, the
BDS Test day was held at the Maryculter Carriage Driving Centre, with various
candidates taking preliminary tests, road driving assessments and intermediate tests.
All the candidates were well prepared for their individual exams and each candidate
was successful.
In May, the Multiples day held at the Maryculter Carriage Driving Centre was a
great success, with an enthusiastic group of BDS members and newcomers having
the opportunity to drive pairs and tandems under the supervision of Jane and Ewan
MacInnes. The day was rounded off with everyone taking a seat on the wagonette
and having a drive round the farm with the MacInnes’ coaching team.
We had the first of our evening drives in May, when Lyn Thomson organised the
drive and picnic at Haddo House. The thunder storms of the afternoon cleared into
a fine, dry evening and 10 turnouts enjoyed the tranquil and scenic route round the
grounds and estate of Haddo with the kind permission of Lord and Lady Aberdeen.
In May we also had our first Sunday drive and picnic, with the venue being Fasque
House and the picturesque village of Fettercairn, with 9 turnouts, including
two pairs and a team, all enjoying the experience of driving through the historic
Fettercairn arch. Some of the drivers had travelled up from the Central area.
Our second evening drive was held in June at the Deeside Glen Tanar estate with 6
turnouts, including three pairs and a tandem, enjoying a sunny evening and a chance
to see the glorious scenery. We returned for the sixth year to Innes House near Elgin
in July, where, despite the rain, 6 turnouts had three choices of routes, including a
section through the historic village of Kingston and along the coastal path beside
the Moray Firth, and on through the gardens and arboretum of the historic Innes
House, where Mark and Hermione Tennant always look forward to meeting the
drivers.
In August a large group of BDS members, coming from the north and
south enthusiastically competed at Jane MacInnes’ dressage and cones and
then settled down to enjoy Chris Delany’s excellent barbeque, before driving
round Maryculter Home farm and along the banks of the River Dee with lamps lit
at dusk.
We had two Sunday drives and picnics in September. 5 turnouts, including three
drivers from the Central area, attended the new venue of Fetteresso Forest for a
choice of three circular routes of 10, 14 and 25km over forest tracks with open,
scenic vistas. Nine turnouts, with drivers coming from the north, south and
west, enjoyed the riverbanks of the River Dee and forest tracks at Blackhall near
Banchory, Deeside for our second September drive and picnic.
Our last drive and picnic for 2009 will be on Saturday 3 October at Pluscarden
Abbey and Monaughty Forest near Elgin, where we are expecting 8 turnouts,
including a team and a tandem.
Our Grampian area end of season meeting, prize giving and Stovie Supper will be
on Saturday evening 5 December at the Keithhall village hall near Inverurie. All are
welcome.
I do hope that, despite the second half of the season being so damp in the West, that
you are still enjoying a fair bit of driving. Some members have been clocking up the
miles attending shows across the country; I am sorry I’ve not been able to join them,
being without an equine for the present. The Whitehall and Chairman’s Cups points
leagues are well populated with BDS West members which is fabulous to see – well
done to everyone for supporting the events which are all, hopefully, going from
strength to strength.
I had the pleasure and privilege of an overnight visit by a fellow Area Commissioner
in mid-August. Margaret Honeybourne from the Isle of Wight stopped off in
Glasgow as she made the journey up to Shetland for the once-every-10-years
Shetland Pony extravaganza, with her two ponies, Tolly & Hunter, and her 3-strong
support team to participate in driving classes and in-hand classes. What an epic
journey and amazing dedication to the sport! Perhaps you saw Margaret being
interviewed for the Scottish News?
One of our West members made a slightly less epic but nonetheless lengthy trip to
Aberdeen for the Lamp-Lit Drive at Jane & Ewan McInnes’. Ruth Martin writes us
a short report:-
“The outing to Maryculter was well attended and enjoyed great weather. The venue was
well prepared and excellent hospitality shown to all by Jane and Ewan. Ewan designed
a very tight cones course which produced only two clears one being Miss Gypsey with 2
secs over time and a double clear from Colin. There were two dressage tests being run and
Ruth Skinner won Novice B and Keira Jarvie won the pre Novice. This was followed
by a BBQ feast – lots of nice eats and plenty wine. Great, as I wasn’t driving the lorry!
Unfortunately since it was such a nice warm and sociable night the Lamp Lit drive did
not start until nearly 9.00pm!! and it got a little scarey on the way back through the
woods. Gypsey could see fine but could not understand why mum was saying ‘steady’! It
was a lovely scene, seeing all the carriages with their lamps lit. Back to home at about
1.00am. Great night.”
Afternoon Drive, Sunday 20th September – We were delighted to be able to return
to Barskimming, Mauchline by kind invitation of the Hon Miss Jean Galbraith &
Family for a pleasure drive through the estate. As the date coincided with National
Donkey Driving Day, we were delighted to welcome some of our long-eared equines
on this drive.
Anthea Greenlees junior training day – A good number of young people from
across Scotland, came to West Newton (near Arbroath) in early August to participate
in the training day under the auspices of the Anthea Greenlees awards. We had a
couple of juniors from the West and they did very well, but sadly got pipped at the
post for the main awards. One or two hopefuls were not able to join this year’s group,
but we look forward to seeing them at the next day in 2010.
Road Driving Assessments
Please remind me if you are desirous of taking this assessment and let me know if you
want the box of information which is in circulation! In any one day, a maximum of
4-5 candidates can be assessed owing to the need to actually drive out on the roads
and the time this will take. The subsidised £5 fee will shortly be lost to us, so please
come forward now to register your (renewed) interest.
Training Days
Over a period of time, several people have asked about training days. Your
committee is in discussion about this and we will have details about venues &
trainers to share with you. We also have a number of people who want to come into
the sport of carriage driving/horse driving trials, so these training days would be open
to non-members either as spectators or participants depending on what is set up.
Please come forward to express any preferences you may have regarding training so
we can try to incorporate as much as possible to everyone’s advantage.
Winter Meetings
As a reminder, our indoor “no horses” winter meeting dates are as follows:-
November – Tuesday 24th, Fairweather Hall at 7.30pm (AGM and guest speaker)
February – Tuesday 26th, Fairweather Hall at 7.30pm
March – Tuesday 30th, Fairweather Hall at 7.30pm
Looking forward to seeing you sometime soon at one or other – or all! – of the above
gatherings.
Wales
The first ever BDS Wales Welsh Trek Championships was held on the 13th of
September in the Crychan Forest. It was a fantastic day with beautiful weather and a
great atmosphere. Turnouts travelled down from N. Wales and up from W. Wales to
compete at the event. Congratulations to everyone who took part, it was a very close
competition. Mike Davies and groom, Liam were the eventual winners and got
to take home a Shield, very kindly donated by N. Wales AC, Morfydd Greatorex.
Emily Ham with groom Chris came a close second. Thank you to all the stewards,
catering staff and especially Sian Burrows for organising the day. Next year we intend
to repeat the event so watch this space.
Junior drivers were once again sponsored by BDS Wales to partake in professional
training which this year took place at Mark Evans’ yard. The Juniors enjoyed
themselves immensely and learned a great deal. BDS Wales undertakes the
sponsorship of a number of Junior drivers each year that participate in the Young
Drivers Award Scheme. This scheme asks for the Junior Driver to submit a folder or
portfolio of what they have been doing over the past year with regard to driving and
horses, there is no limit on age and details are available from ACs. The deadline for
2010 is February 1st to be handed into your AC.
News from Head Office is that the reduced price on the Road Driving Assessments
will not be available come April, so in order to take advantage of the offer while it
still remains £5 please contact your AC or LHHI and book in to do this important
test.
Our area has certainly been flying the B.D.S. flag these past few months. Enjoying
weekends/rallies and participating or demonstrating at local Shows. It is nice to see
so many of you having a go at something and the smiles say it all.
The Glensevern driving weekend was a great success and enjoyed by all. This was
two days of forest driving around the Llanguirg area. Many thanks to Glenys &
Alan Davies for organising this event. On August Bank Holiday, we put on a display
at a small show, nr. Brecon. Many thanks to Emily Ham for her lovely display with
her stallion, Crossfield Glory. It was a lovely fine day and the crowds thoroughly
enjoyed the commentary and display, hopefully gaining an insight into Carriage
Driving and recruiting new members. We had lots of interest from Juniors and they
enjoyed sitting in the Show Carriage. Congratulations also to Emily for winning her
class at the Junior BHDTA champsionships. “Jack” has done her proud.
During August, we had a BBQ & Equine Boot Sale at Llangamach Wells. Many
thanks to Bob & Phillipa Giles for arranging this. Despite the weather, it was a nice
occasion for members to relax without horses and bring along those bits of tack or
harness stored in the loft.
Members also participated in the Welsh Le-Trec Championships on 13th September.
Many congratulations to the winner, Mike Davies of Garth and his navigator, Liam
(a team to be challenged next year)! Also, Emily Ham & Chris and Kath and Ray
Gower, all of which took three of the top four places. I hope we will see more of you
try Le Trec in 2010. It’s good fun and helps develop your driving skills.
Beulah Show – This is the second year, we have put on some driving classes at this
lovely show. The show offers us plentiful parking & ring facilities and they cannot
do enough to help us. Now affiliated as a BDS Show, we would like it to grow
further and see more entrants. It is ideal for novices or experienced and there is a
lovely country road drive with a stop at the Forest Café for a break. What could be
more perfect? Diary date for next year 11th September 2010.
Our annual Dragon Drive on 26/27 September was a real hit this year. We are sorry
to those who had to go on a waiting list, but spaces are limited and you have to book
early for next year. Many drivers came from all the corners of the U.K. & overseas
to enjoy the wonderful scenery and driving challenges that Mid Wales offers. They
enjoyed two days of off road driving and socialising. Many elected to stay between
five and seven days, allowing them extra time to drive the countless tracks. Many
asking to return next year. It was also nice to see some of our members attend
Sunday’s Drive. Diary date: 25/26 September 2010.
On 4th October, we had a fun Rally arranged by Mike Davies. This was a 10 mile
road Drive with a few driving tasks on route. Mike kindly offered me his horse to
drive for the day and yes incredibly, I won! Mike tells me, this was not a fix.
Finally, I would like to wish all our members a happy Christmas and if you are still
driving out this winter, enjoy yourselves and take care.
It has been a season of mixed fortune and variable weather for Area 50 members. July
26th started with the heaviest rain of the summer so we had to resort to wet weather
arrangements for the areas Le Trek competition. Thanks to Mr Williams Williams’
Wynne, for the use of all the estate barns where full sized horse boxes can be parked
under cover, Phase 1 could also be carried out indoors. By some miracle the rain
stopped the moment the competition started. The competitors reported that they
enjoyed the six mile cross country route with many natural obstacles testing both
whip and groom. They enjoyed the splendid scenary, sculptures and the mainly off
road route. The standard of turnout was high and points were hard fought for. The
winners were: Angela Drinkwater-Lunn with groom Elys Hughes, driving Treacle
who just narrowly beat Mike Davies and groom Liam Daly with their wonderful
coloured cob on time difference. The Junior section of the Le Trek was won by Oscar
Hutchinson driving Tatyana. Well done everyone and a huge thank you to everyone
who helped the day progress.
Georgina Holt and Nadine England are to be congratulated on their many successes
at shows throughout the summer. We welcomed Georgina’s new young horse to
the group and look forward to his early experiences in a carriage. We will miss the
Dartmoor pair and hope they will enjoy the pastures new.
Fifteen turnouts enjoyed the Dyfnant Forest Drive, BDS members from Shropshire,
Oswestry and the Welshpool area enjoyed the twelve or six mile drive. Ann Watson-
Smythe put on a wonderful tea and members enjoyed meeting and greeting each
other whilst the horses enjoyed their well earned rest in the superb corrals.
The Le Trek Championship in the Crychan Forest was enormous fun, we were
proud that Mike and Liam won as they had qualified at our regional Le Trek at
Peniarth. Area 50 members would also like to congratulate equine dentist Andre
Grave Majerski for his recent award for services to horses and donkeys. He spent his
holidays treating abused equines abroad free of charge. At home he offers a caring
professional service, well done Andre and thank you, your sincere love of each animal
is evident in your work.
We all thought our biggest ever event in April “The Art Of Carriage Driving”
would not be surpassed, but how wrong we were. August Bank Holiday weekend
proved to be just as popular with members, guests and the public at The Grosvenor
Estate, Erddig Park and Rossett Festival. Saturday saw members & guests arrive
at John Challoners Park Farm, Rossett to park boxes and get turnouts ready. At
11.30am, 11 carriages left for the Rossett Festival at Darland School led by North
Wales Police. On arrival the turnouts were met by the Deputy Mayor of Wrexham
Cllr JA Kelly KSG together whom with the Deputy Mayoress presented rosettes
to the whip and groom of each carriage watched by a large gathering of the public.
Following the presentation, the various carriages, horses & ponies were explained
using our new roving sound system. At 12.30 carriages set off for the highlight
of the day, a 14 mile tour of the Grosvenor Estate the home of His Grace the
Duke Of Westminster, entrance was via the Belgrave Gate, carriages then travelled
along the straight mile long lawned road to Eaton Hall, through the Deer Park to
assemble on the aerodrome. The estate security had kindly signposted the Estate
with BDS signage” the route then was via the heronry, through some of the 88
acres of gardens, past the serpentine and over Thomas Telfords Iron Bridge which
crosses the river Dee, this is the only iron bridge built by Telford which still carries
road traffic the other being in Shropshire
at Coalbrookdale. Carriages continued
through the Aldford gate, passing estate
farms before returning via Aldford
Village back to the Grosvenor Estate
& continuing for several more miles
enjoying views of lakes and gardens before
departing the estate and returning via
Pulford to Park Farm for refreshments
kindly provided by Mrs Challoner and
family in the garden. The drive had been
an experience of a lifetime complimented
by glorious Sunshine. A.C Janet Williams
gave a vote of thanks to Zena Spencer and
John Challoner for organising the drive,
His Grace The Duke of Westminster &
Estate Management for allowing and
assisting the drive through the vast Estate.
Thanks were also expressed to volunteers
for manning deer gates & The Telford
Bridge.
As the showing season comes to an end it’s time to have a break, before the winter
events start up. It’s been a good season for many members doing well at local events,
keep up the good work as we need to support as many as we can of these events
so they can continue. The nights are drawing in and it’s getting colder, so wrap up
warm for the winter and I wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Thanks for your support and help throughout the past year at all the events.
On the 4th July the North Wales show in Caernarfonhad good entries forward, the
champion was Helen Williams & reserve was Morfydd Greatorex. The following
week 11th July was Trefor show with only one entry forward, Mr. Gwyn Berry with
his Welsh pony. On the 19th July we held a road drive in Betws yn Rhos, driving past
the well known Coed Coch stud estate, several members came and enjoyed the drive.
The following Saturday 8th August saw two events, Eglwysbach Show and Colin &
Lynne Walmsley’s fun weekend. Eglwysbach show had some entries forward in all
driving classes. Champion was Anthony Spencer and reserve Tony Tharme. Colin
and Lynne had a busy and well supported weekend which they organise each year
and raise a great deal of money for local charities, well done to you both.
Anglesey show came next with wet weather again this year, but nevertheless the
classes were well supported, well done to locals Penny Wear winning the pleasure
driving and Tilda Manson who came second. Also Bob Parry who won the cob in
show wagon class. The champion was Janice Clough and reserve Mr. R. Mills.
Llanrwst show on the 15th August was
very wet and cold with only a few braving
the weather, champion was H. Williams
and reserve J. Williams.
Our next event had to be cancelled due
to my husband and myself having swine
flu, so we held our fun day BBQ on the
30th August instead of the 23rd. Several
members came along and it was nice and
Alwen Drive
dry until half way through the BBQ, but
we carried on regardless.
31st August Babell charity show had
only two entries forward. Unfortunately
it clashed with another driving event.
Champion was Morfydd Greatorex and
reserve Anthony Spencer.
On the 13th September my husband and
I travelled to Mid-Wales to help out with
the first BDS Wales Trec championship,
Betws Drive
it was a good day and a lot of fun was had
by all the competitors.
September 20th we held a drive in Newborough forest with 6 turnouts taking
advantage of the great off road driving.
October 4th we held a drive in the Brenig/Alwen forestry which was organised by
AC Janet Prytherch. It was a chilly day but well worth it. Six turnouts came along;
hopefully we can arrange some more drives in our local forestry’s in 2010 as we have
some great drives in our area. We will look into them over the winter months.
Hi everybody, hope you all had a good summer, its time to settle down for the
winter, the dark nights give a chance for all the harness and vehicle checks and
repairs and our four legged friends to have a well earned rest, unless you are planning
to take part in some indoor driving at Pencoed, This year they are planning a
very novice class ,details can be obtained from Rowena Moyse at the South Wales
Carriage centre, I must remind you though that BDS insurance does not cover you
for this type of driving so please take advice from your own insurance. This year we
have been invited to have a joint xmas function with the WHHS, I think this is a
good idea as most members are in both clubs, ring Happy for details. Just to remind
any Juniors that portfolios need to be completed by the end of January for entry for
you all , if you need any guidance for your portfolio, please ring for help. Next year
Gower and Cefn Bryn. As we left the common we were joined by a herd of trekking
ponies that live out on the common but as we passed through the cattle grid gate
they got left behind. We then went through the village of Three Crosses before
turning left towards the coast again. We crossed the main road near Crofty and then
went onto the marsh road which as the tide was out wasn’t flooded. We were again
joined by loose horses but luckily none of the whips or ponies were worried and the
loose horses soon gave up and returned to grazing. We then climbed back up to the
main road about a mile from the pub. Arriving back we unharnessed and retired into
the pub for a little light refreshment. John Williams also organised a drive for local
drivers wishing to qualify for the tandem meet in Clydach. He had a good turn out
and some of the members went to the tandem meet and gained their bars as a result.
I held an area barbeque at the South Wales Carriage Driving Centre back in the rainy
part of the summer where I asked members to bring along photos of their turnouts
to show others what they had been up to in the past and more recent times. About
30 people turned up and we had a very good evening. A couple of our early autumn
events unfortunately have not taken place due to lack of entries or numbers, namely
our area Trek event which last year was very well attended and a trip by mini bus to
the Reading carriage sale in September.
A road driving assessment day and prelim driving exam day took place at the South
Wales Carriage Centre on Sunday 20th September where Sarah Wildy examined a
number of junior whips all of whom passed. Anyone else in the area or surrounding
areas who wish to take their road driving assessments please get in contact as we will
be holding more test and assessment days throughout the autumn and winter period.
We have decided to join the Cimla Club again this year for our Christmas dinner
on the 13th December at the T-Bones Restaurant. Any members wishing to join us
again this year please let me know early so you won’t be disappointed. If last year was
anything to go by then we will all have a good time.
Well folks, as you can see this is my last newsletter as AC. I am very pleased that
Maggie has agreed to carry the badge, and that so many of you contacted me after
the notification of my standing down was sent out in support of Maggie as nominee.
I know that she will do a great job with the support and encouragement she is sure
to get from all our drivers. Over the years that I have done the job, I have enjoyed so
much sharing of friendship, knowledge, problems, but most of all fun with you all –
I’ll still be around driving but very quietly!
The drive from Tinas was switched to go from Anne Windsors’ forest farm. Seven
turnouts had a lovely sunny trip into the hills above Whitland followed by a
wonderful Windsor tea and chat. Many thanks to Rachel and Anne for a good day
out.
There was a really busy turnout for our last drive, Pendine Sands Beach Drive, 15
turnouts including members of Cimla Ride and Drive Group. Wonderful day was
had by all, again hosted by the Stevens family, legendary hospitality all day. Very
many thanks to all concerned for such a well organised and well run day. Our
Annual Meeting on Oct 23rd is at the Forge, St Clears which has not happened as I
write this, however Maggie will report on that in the next newsletter, I am sure.
As the ponies get their winter coats on and their set of shoes wears thin, do
remember to give that harness a last good clean, and undo all the buckles, wrap it
up and put it away for the damp winter all tidy and safe for a really good season on
2010.
See you all and many thanks for all the good times I have enjoyed with you.
I am sorry for the lack of information in the last couple of issues but it hasn’t been
for a lack of driving but of a lack of time! Back in June in conjunction with the
Cimla Driving club we had a great day driving on the Gower from the Greyhound
with about 12 turnouts heading over Welsh moor enjoying fantastic views of the
6th - 10th July – Junior Trip to Swingletree NI-BDS junior members who went
to Swingletree. This action packed week gave the young drivers the opportunity to
experience a wide variety of driving activities. These included lungeing, long-reining
in the outdoor arena, driving on the quiet country lanes, dressage, & cone driving
in the international size arena. Each young driver was ‘given’ one or more horses
or ponies to look after during their stay and had the opportunity to drive different
horses or ponies and carriages. Mr John Parker and Susan Townsend were impressed
with the standard of knowledge and driving skills attained by the group. Susan said
“They also had good knowledge and enjoyed getting up and working hard to achieve their
goal and your NI Branch should be very proud of them”, we certainly are! Presentations
were made and rosettes given to all. John said “it was a real pleasure to have the entire
group staying for training/ testing and it’s a credit to Northern Ireland, especially Eugene
Larkin the Chairman for his forward thinking and pushing Northern Ireland into being
a front runner.”
Joanne Orr - achieving
Intermediate plus some units
from the advanced level along
also Junior Neil Weir passed their
Preliminary level and road driving
assessment. When A.C. Liz
BDS Castle Ward
Kelly was asked about the success of the training/testing she said, “we could not have
done any better in the achievements obtained. I put it down to a good Ulster fry every
morning, to which the staff at Swingletree enjoyed too. The youngsters have enjoyed their
experience with cone driving being a favourite. I must thank everyone who helped raise
the money for the Young drivers through generous donations. It’s the good community
spirit as a whole that makes it move forward and this week has demonstrated real team
work.”
Dragon Drive from Llanwrtyd Wells
My very good friend Fred Morton invited me to
accompany him to the Dragon Drive taking place at
Llanwrtyd Wells from the Lasswade Country House Hotel.
After an affirmative meeting, favourable agreement from
management (darling wife Norma), I looked forward to the
event with anticipation. We travelled down to the venue
with Billy, Fred’s piebald cob, arriving at mid afternoon.
Our hosts for the weekend were Roger and Emma Stevens,
the hotel’s owners. Emma met us with a very warm
welcome and then led us to Billy’s stabling facility. Before
the evening meal, which was a gastronomic delight, we
availed ourselves of the bar facilities and chatted to other
guests where the conversation, not surprisingly, revolved
around horses and driving and not one argument ensued.
On the Saturday morning, Roger explained where
we were to meet in the forest with our trusty steeds. The
large parking area selected for our departure was perfect,
ample room for all of our vehicles, tying posts and two
gated corals available. The harness and vehicle inspection
was carried out by Emma (AC Mid East Wales). We set off
at three minute intervals on the twelve mile drive which
proved to be fantastic. The route took us mainly over well
defined forest tracks with an occasional off road sauté and
was clearly marked at strategic points. At the arranged
half way stop, deep in the forest, Roger and Emma again
produced a buffet lunch and water for the horses. The
spectacular scenery before us was a wonderful sight.
The Saturday evening meal was a buffet and there was
plenty of hot and cold fare for all. Our hosts had invited
the local land owners whose fields we were to cross on the
Sunday drive, a gentleman from the Forestry Commission
and the excellent marshals. Sundays’ drive followed the
same format but the terrain to start with was through
Mid Wales Dragon Drive, September 26 2009
open country. We travelled through fields and long since
forgotten drover’s tracks.
The second half of the Sunday drive took us into the
forest. At one point having climbed for some time the view
from the summit was staggering. Blackpool Tower was
almost visible! Occasionally Fred who has a very keen eye
pointed out the wildlife, Pine Martins, Red squirrel, badger
and the odd bear, although I didn’t see one. Considering
Emma & Roger run a hotel business which must be very
time consuming, they are to be commended for their
expertise in the arranging and organising of the driving
weekend.
Many congratulations to Natasha Pritty on winning the
BDS Junior Scholarshp, sponsored by Kelvin, from all
her driving chums at Red House Stables, Darley Dale.
DRAGON
DRIVE 2009
2009 enticed people as far away
as Jersey, Devon, Cornwall, Kent,
Sussex, Cheshire and Derbyshire and
not forgetting the local Welsh. Many
people opting to stay for 5-7 days.
The 14 days leading up to the event,
meant that we had dry weather which
in the end made all the difference.
With a good helping of pairs as
well as the reliable single turnouts,
everybody was able to experience
exactly what they had come for.
Stunning scenery, plenty of wildlife
and miles and miles of off-road
driving. In order to get to these
vantage points, it meant of course that
one had to climb but everyone agreed
that they were driving on top of the
world! The ones who elected to stay
longer, had the advantage of extra
days of driving. You can’t come this
far with out taking full advantage. The
quality of driving and the experience,
repaid itself ten times over. Emma and
Roger are very grateful for the help
of many Stewards and the amazing
response from Private Land Owners to
the Managers of various Forests. Last
but not least, the fabulous company
of those who elected to come and
join us.
Amazing,
but not everyone knows we do car, home and business insurance
A big congratulations to :-
Michael Moores, Carol Parker, Lesley Wigley, Jill Pickup and Alison
Townsend who successfully passed the B.D.S Road Safety Test and also
the Driving section of the B.D.S.Preliminary Level. Alison Townsend had
already successfully passed the BHS Stage 1 and so has attained the complete
Preliminary Level. Jill Pickup had only started driving in April 2009 and both
she and Michael Moores do not have their own turnout. They drove David
& Stephanie Nuttall’s two fell ponies Tonka and Tiggy. They are all hoping to
continue and attain the B.D.S. Intermediate Level.
Could you also say a big thank you to those who came to the bank holiday
weekend at Steph and Daves for supporting the event and we hope everyone
that came will come next year.
Carriage “Boot” Sale
The 24th Carriage Boot Sale on 27th September at Red House Stables,
Darley Dale continues to attract huge crowds from near and far. Everything
equine is on sale here, “Anything from a Horse Brass to a Horsebox” states the
advert and that is exactly what was on display! Gigs, Carts, Horses, Donkeys &
Harness, everything you could imagine in all shapes and sizes. The day attracted
over 500 visitors (just imagine all those cups of tea!!). A tremendous day out
and one certainly not to be missed so make a note in your diary for next year –
Sunday September 26th 2010.
