1. ADVERTISING RATES<br />

a. Local Open Rate<br />

retailer’s name. Additional information required will be the insertion order<br />

ID, the number of boxes/pallets (ie: 1 of 6), the run date <strong>and</strong> the name of<br />

newspaper(s)to be inserted.<br />

Any changes to the insertion order must be sent to the newspaper no<br />

later than 72 hours before the insert date. After that time the newspaper<br />

will not accept any responsibility for any errors that may occur.<br />

2. SPECIAL SECTIONS<br />

Special Sections will be published monthly. For a list of up<strong>com</strong>ing special<br />

sections please contact your advertising representative. Limited<br />

color spots available. Rates are determined for each individual section.<br />

3. INTERNET<br />

All of our papers have robust websites. We can increase your advertising<br />

viewership by automatically uploading your ad to the internet. There<br />

are many opportunities to be part of the website by purchasing premium<br />

spots on our regular website <strong>and</strong> our special SWIowaSports.<strong>com</strong>. For<br />

more information, please ask your advertising representative.<br />

4. COLOR RATES<br />

Process color advertisements are accepted, subject to availability <strong>and</strong><br />

mechanical limitations. A request for color does not guarantee its placement<br />

in color, but every effort will be made to ac<strong>com</strong>modate all color<br />

requests. Full page color $65. For smaller sizes, color may be priced per<br />

inch.<br />

5. DEADLINES<br />

Valley News deadline is 5 p.m. two days prior<br />

<strong>Clarinda</strong> <strong>Herald</strong>-<strong>Journal</strong> deadline is noon Friday<br />

<strong>Weekly</strong> <strong>Times</strong> deadline is noon Wednesday<br />

Essex Independent is 5 p.m. Monday Ads that are accepted after deadline<br />

will not be given a proof <strong>and</strong> the publisher accepts no responsibility<br />

for any errors that may occur.<br />

Classified deadlines for the Wednesday Shen<strong>and</strong>oah Valley News are at<br />

noon on Tuesday <strong>and</strong> for the Saturday edition are Thursday at noon. The<br />

deadline for the <strong>Weekly</strong> <strong>Times</strong> is Thursday at 3 p.m. For the <strong>Herald</strong>-<br />

<strong>Journal</strong>, the deadline is 5 p.m. Friday.<br />

6.TERMS OF PAYMENT<br />

a. Local rates are non-<strong>com</strong>missionable.<br />

b. Payment must be made in advance until credit has been established.<br />

Political, going out of business <strong>and</strong> transient advertising is payable in<br />

advance.<br />

c. All advertising charges are due on the 15th of the month following the<br />

month of insertion.<br />

7. ADVERTISING RATE POLICIES<br />

a. At certain times, advertising rates must be adjusted. The publisher<br />

reserves the right to make adjustments as necessary.<br />

b. Every effort will be made to try to eliminate any errors in <strong>com</strong>posing<br />

the advertising copy. Every display advertisement is proofread. Should<br />

an error occur in your advertisement, please contact us immediately. We<br />

will gladly supply you with a letter you can show your patrons that an<br />

error occurred. Also, if you are due a credit for the error, we will issue it<br />

for the amount of space that was in error in your advertisement. Claims<br />

for errors in advertisements should be received by the newspaper within<br />

48 hours of the initial publication date.<br />

c.We will make every effort to <strong>com</strong>ply with your requests for a certain<br />

position in the newspapers. Unfortunately, we are not always able to do<br />

so. Should you want your ad on a specific page, we will guarantee you<br />

this position for an additional 25% of the ad cost, subject to availability.<br />

d. Should any tax be imposed on newspaper advertising, it will be added<br />

to all rates <strong>and</strong> paid for by the advertiser.<br />

e. Advertising space cannot be purchased from other newspapers or<br />

outside groups for the purpose of resale.<br />

This practice, known as brokered advertising, involves an outside agent<br />

selling advertising space to multiple advertisers as ROP or pre-print<br />

advertising. Since the newspapers deal directly <strong>and</strong> individually with our<br />

local advertisers through our sales staff, brokered advertising is prohibited<br />

except in joint promotions in which the newspapers are participants.<br />

f. The publisher reserves the right to refuse any advertising.<br />

8. MECHANICAL MEASUREMENTS<br />

a. St<strong>and</strong>ard Page - Valley News <strong>and</strong> <strong>Herald</strong>-<strong>Journal</strong><br />

St<strong>and</strong>ard page is 10.125 inches wide by 21 inches deep (6 columns by<br />

21 inches) or 126 column inches per page. Double truck is 24 inches<br />

wide by 21 inches deep.<br />

St<strong>and</strong>ard Page - <strong>Weekly</strong> <strong>Times</strong><br />

The st<strong>and</strong>ard page for the <strong>Weekly</strong> <strong>Times</strong> measures 11.832 inches wide<br />

by 21 inches deep but is seven columns wide. For specific column widths<br />

in any of our papers, ask your ad representative.<br />
