explained in terms of a technological analogue:
When an electrical current (considered as being
spirit) flows though a lamp (representing the
body), a third entity is produced, namely light
(the phenomenon of a new soul).
Man’s fall into sin: Without the trialistic biblical
view of man, some fundamental biblical concepts
would remain a mystery. In the garden of Eden
God gave a single commandment: “You are free
to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must
not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good
and evil, for when you eat of it, you will surely
die” (Gen 2:16-17). After they had sinned, Adam
and Eve still lived on, but their spirit which was
in direct communication with God, died immediately.
The close communion with God ended, and
as a result of their sin, physical, bodily death
entered the world – “the wages of sin is death”
(Rom 6:23). They not only died spiritually that
day, they began to die physically from then on.
The end result is that eternal death awaits every
person, but that does not mean that his/her existence
will be ended (Luke 16:19-31). It means that
man will for all eternity be separated from God.
God’s wrath remains on him, since “the result of
one trespass was condemnation for all men”
(Rom 5:18).
Salvation: But, praise God! He has provided
everything necessary to make it possible for us to
leave the train of death in which all of us are
travelling towards eternal doom. How this happens,
how our dead spirits can be revived, is discussed
fully in the second part of this book.
