that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Christ
(anointed one or Messiah – Hebrew mashiyach).
Jesus’ favourite title for Himself was the Son of
Man. In this way He confirms but also conceals
His position as Messiah (e. g. Matt 8:20, John
3:14). By choosing this title, He emphasises two
aspects:
Firstly, that He was a human being, a descendant
of human forebears. Both genealogies in
Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38 confirm this.
Secondly, Jesus confirms and describes His second
coming in glory in the following words: “For
as the lightning comes from the east and is visible
in the west, so will be the coming of the Son
of Man... They will see the Son of Man coming on
the clouds of the sky, with power and great
glory” (Matt 24:27, 30). With these words, Jesus
was identifying with the prophecy in Daniel
Chapter 7 verse 13: “there before me was one like
a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven.”
The Bible testifies that Jesus exists from eternity
(Everlasting Father, Isaiah 9:6) to eternity: “Jesus
Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever”
(Hebr 13:8). When He was on earth, He was
here both as God’s Son and as a human being.
This is expressed clearly in Philippians 2:6-7:
“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider
equality with God something to be grasped, but
made himself nothing, taking the very nature of
a servant, being made in human likeness.”
