Does God also have
sense organs?
We read the following words of Jesus in John
4:24: “God is spirit, and his worshippers must
worship in spirit and in truth.” And in the first
commandment God prohibits the making of
physical structures supposed to represent Him:
“I am the LORD your God ... You shall not make
for yourself an idol in the form of anything in
heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the
waters below” (Ex 20:2, 4).
Nevertheless, the Bible frequently refers to God’s
sense organs, and also to His mouth, His hand,
His arm, His finger, and His heart:
Ear: God can hear. The Psalmist experienced this
positively: “Because he (God) turned his ear to
me, I will call on him as long as I live” (Ps 116:2).
King Hezekiah prayed that God would listen and
look: “Give ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes,
O LORD, and see” (2 Kings 19:16). God heard the
cries of the oppressed nation (Ex 3:7), their tears
and groans (Psalm 6:9; Ps 102:20), their grumbling
(Ex 16:7, Numbers 12:2), but also their
prayers and pleas (1 Kings 8:28; 1 Kings 9:3).
These can be summarised in the words of the
Psalmist: “Does he who implanted the ear, not
hear?” (Ps 94:9).
Eye: God’s eyes miss nothing: “For the eyes
of the LORD range throughout the earth to
strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed
to him” (2 Chron 16:9). God even sees everything
that is concealed from us: “your eyes saw
my unformed body” (Ps 139:16). He perceives the
future and everything else which is invisible for
us. Nobody can hide himself from God’s eyes
(Ps 139:3, 7).
Mouth: God does have a mouth, since in the creation
account the words “And God said” appear
ten times. Everything coming from God’s mouth,
is, by definition, His Word. We cannot live apart
from His Word: “man does not live on bread
alone but on every word that comes from the
mouth of the LORD” (Deut 8:3). God gave us a
mouth as well: “Who gave man his mouth? ... Is it
not I, the LORD?” (Ex 4:11).
Hand: God says: “See, I have engraved you on
the palms of my hands” (Is 49:16). Not only are
the names of those who believe in God written in
the book of life, but they are entrusted to His
hand as well. Jesus “was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities”
(Is 53:5). His hands and feet were pierced because
of our sins. The above mentioned text (Is 49:16)
can thus be interpreted as: “We are engraved in
the hands of Jesus”. God cares for us, but also for
all creatures. According to Psalm 145:16 everything
is a gift from God’s hand: “You open your
hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.”
God’s hand is also involved in his works of creation,
as mentioned frequently:
Psalm 19:1: “...the skies proclaim the works of his
hands.”
Psalm 102:25: “the heavens are the work of your
hands.”
Psalm 8:6: “You made him ruler over the works of
your hands.”
When the “good news about the Lord Jesus”
(Acts 11:20) was told in Antioch, many people
believed, because “The Lord’s hand was with
them (the apostles), and a great number of people
believed and turned to the Lord” (Acts 11:21).
Arm: God’s arm symbolises His great power. He
led the Israelites out of Egypt with His strong
arm (Acts 13:17: “with an high arm brought he
them out”, King James Version). God reminds
