Canadian researchers tested 33 samples of<br />
certified <strong>no</strong>n-GE ca<strong>no</strong>la seed and found 32<br />
samples contaminated with GE varieties – with<br />
three samples having contamination levels of<br />
more than two percent (Freisa L, Nelson, A &<br />
Van Acker, R, (2003) Evidence of contamination<br />
of pedigreed ca<strong>no</strong>la (brassica napus) seed lots<br />
in western Canada with genetically engineered<br />
herbicide resistance traits.” Agro<strong>no</strong>my Journal, 95,<br />

A<strong>no</strong>ther study in the US found that virtually all<br />
samples of <strong>no</strong>n-GE corn, soy beans, and ca<strong>no</strong>la<br />
seed were contaminated by GE varieties (Mella<br />
M and Rissler J (2004), Gone to Seed: Transgenic<br />
Contaminates in the Traditional Seed Supply,<br />
Union of Concerned Scientists).<br />
A study in the UK found that GE ca<strong>no</strong>la crosspollinated<br />
with <strong>no</strong>n-GE ca<strong>no</strong>la more than 26 km<br />
away (Ramsay G, Thompson C and Squire G,<br />

An Australian study found that gene-carrying<br />
pollen from GE ca<strong>no</strong>la can travel up to three km<br />
via wind or insects. <strong>The</strong> present isolation distance<br />
in Canada between GE and <strong>no</strong>n-GE ca<strong>no</strong>la is a<br />

<strong>The</strong> Canadian National Farmers Union (2005)<br />
stated “GE crop agriculture is incompatible with<br />
other forms of farming – <strong>no</strong>n-GE and organic,<br />
for instance, because GE crops contaminate and<br />

A report of the Japanese Institute for<br />
Environmental <strong>Studie</strong>s (JIES) confirmed that<br />
herbicide resistant genetically engineered ca<strong>no</strong>la<br />
plants had escaped into Japanese ecosystems at<br />
major shipping ports along the Japanese coast<br />

In a 2007 report by the Network of Concerned<br />
Farmers on “<strong>The</strong> Eco<strong>no</strong>mies of genetically<br />
modified ca<strong>no</strong>la” it was assessed that if GM ca<strong>no</strong>la<br />
was introduced in Australia and 20 percent of<br />
farmers adopted it, <strong>no</strong>n-GE farmers would suffer<br />
losses of $65.52 million due to contamination.<br />
In December 2010, organic farmer Steve Marsh<br />
in Australia lost his organic status because his<br />
harvest was found contaminated with genetically<br />
modified Roundup Ready ca<strong>no</strong>la (http://<br />

In August 2006, trace amounts of Bayer’s<br />
experimental genetically engineered Liberty<br />
Link rice was found to have contaminated 30<br />
percent of the Riceland in Texas, Louisiana,<br />
Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi. <strong>The</strong> trials<br />
for the GE rice were being undertaken by Bayer<br />
and Louisiana State University at Crowley, LA.<br />
Within four days, the news of contamination<br />
led to decline in futures prices by 14 percent,<br />
costing growers $150 million. Exports fell as<br />
the European Union, Japan and Russia stopped<br />
importing long grain rice grown in the US.<br />
Eleven thousand US rice farmers sued Bayer<br />
for contaminating their rice and ruining their<br />
exports. On July 1, 2011, Bayer agreed to pay<br />
the farmers $750 million to settle (Bayer settles<br />
with farmers over modified rice seeds, New<br />
York Times, 2nd July, 2011 – http://www.nytimes.<br />

In 2001, D. Quist and I. Chapela of the<br />
University of Mexico published a study in<br />
Nature magazine “Transgenic DNA introgressed<br />
into traditional maize land races in Oaxaca,<br />
Mexico (nature, 414, 6863, November 29, 2001<br />
p. 541-543). <strong>The</strong>ir study showed that native<br />
maize had been contaminated by GE corn. This<br />
was in spite of the fact that it is illegal to grow<br />
GE maize in Mexico.<br />
Mexico is the center of diversity of corn. This<br />
is where corn was domesticated and where the<br />
highest diversity of corn exists. According to the<br />
government, the contamination took place when<br />
farmers planted corn imported from the US, <strong>no</strong>t<br />
k<strong>no</strong>wing it was genetically modified.<br />
In April 2002, the Mexican government<br />
confirmed contamination of native corn by<br />
GE corn. As Jorge Soberon, Secretary of<br />
Mexico’s Biodiversity Commission, stated<br />
“This is the world’s worst case of contamination<br />
by genetically modified material because it<br />
happened in the place of origin of a major crop.<br />
It is confirmed. <strong>The</strong>re is <strong>no</strong> doubt about it” (C.<br />
