CHROMOPHARE F Generation: Innovative Reflector Light with LEDs
Unique lighting concept and light design combine functionality and
aesthetics
Tuttlingen, November 2011 - The new CHROMOPHARE F Generation facilitates
concentrated and safe operating due to its innovative LED-reflector light technology and
individual colour temperature selection. With its 360 degree universal joint and fullcircumference
rail, the light head can be moved without restriction. Appealing and highquality
execution in light-weight and robust materials makes these surgical lights
trendsetters.
The new F Generation combines proven reflector technology with the newest LED
technology. In specifics: In contrast to other technologies, the light beams are mixed within
the light head. Hence they produce light with exceptional spectral qualities. This mixing is
achieved using a very flat free-form polygon reflector and total reflection. In doing so, the
beam from the LED light source is targeted with help from the reflector in the light head. Up
to 420 facets generate more than 650 overlapping beam paths for a homogeneous light
beam and glare-free light field. Colour-cast shadows in the surgical field are reduced to a
minimum. The light field can be focused so that even small and deep wounds can be
illuminated without unwanted side reflections.
The F Generation makes working in the operating room safer and more efficient
The most powerful model of the F Generation, the CHROMOPHARE F 628, has a diameter
of 75 centimetres and a light intensity of 160,000 lux. This can be seamlessly dimmed from
ten to one hundred percent. The small light head of the CHROMOPHARE F 528 has a
diameter of 65 centimetres and a light intensity of approx. 125,000 lux. Good lighting reduces
operating time, and so the cost per procedure can be reduced over time. If the surgical field
is properly illuminated, the surgical team needs to readjust the lighting less, is less distracted
and able to work in a more concentrated way. BERCHTOLD LED lights work efficiently and
economically, and have an average service life of 40,000 hours. Their power consumption is
minimal thanks to the high-performance LEDs. The low heat generation of the light of one
degree Celsius in the surgeon's head area provides a pleasant working environment, even
for surgeries that last a long time. With a standard colour temperature of 4500 Kelvin,
CHROMOPHARE lights produce daylight-quality white light. Depending on preference, the

Press Release
surgeon can select three additional colour temperatures. Colour temperatures of 3600, 4000
or 5000 K are possible using the so-called Color Select, which works by mixing dual-white
LEDs.
Design and material: hygienic and resistant
CHROMOPHARE lights meet the highest demands for design and functionality. A screwless
housing with minimal seal ring area, closed shapes with smooth, seamless surfaces and soft,
edgeless contours make the lights simple and efficient to clean. Flow turbulence is effectively
reduced, thus a maximum laminar compatibility is achieved. The materials of the light head
comply with the high hygiene requirements in the operating room. Particularly light highperformance
materials and components are used for minimum weight and maximum
performance. The composite of plastic and metal developed for the F Generation resists
chemicals, scratches and impacts. BERCHTOLD uses structured glass as a light emission
surface on the underside of the light head. In comparison to plastic, glass is easier to clean,
less sensitive to strong cleaning materials, robust against impacts and does not reflect.
Convenient use: 360-degree universal joint and hand rail
The surgical team positions the light inside and outside of the sterile surgical area using a
handle that goes around the light. This makes the surgical light accessible in any situation
without restriction. This ensures efficient working and that the surgical field is always
optimally lit. In the centre of the light head, there is an additional sterilisable handle that the
surgeon uses to adjust the light. The handle is removed, cleaned and reused after the
surgery. The light head of the F Generation is attached to the suspension with a new 360
degree universal side bearing in such a way that it can be freely rotated around its own axis
and can therefore be easily positioned even in low rooms without restriction.
Functional light for endoscopy: GuideLite and EndoLite
EndoLite indirect lighting is centrally built into the F Generation suspension. It improves the
work conditions for surgeons for endoscopy procedures in darkened rooms. The LED light
source used is designed for true colour vision. With the downward orientated GuideLite the
surgeon dims the normal light beam to just five-to-ten percent of its light intensity. It
illuminates the surgical field and makes for safe handling of endoscopic instruments.
Control by touch display, keypad or sensor system in the handle
Another highlight of the F Generation is the interactive multicolour touch panel. All light
functions are clearly displayed and visually arranged on the touch screen. It can be fastened
to the wall or the light suspension. Light intensity, light field size, Color Select, EndoLite,
GuideLite and a camera are quick and easy to control. Alternatively there is a keypad
whereby all features can be controlled at the touch of a button. An innovative sensor system
integrated into the handle allows the OR personnel to position the light head during the
operation without inadvertently adjusting the light field size. Additionally, the light can be
specifically focused via the handle. Acoustic feedback assists the surgeon in this.
F Generation mobile lights with unrestricted light intensity
BERCHTOLD is the only supplier of mobile surgical lights with a light intensity of 160,000 lux
and Color Select. With the new CHROMOPHARE F Generation, BERCHTOLD offers mobile
lights in two sizes. The larger F 628 model has exactly this light intensity. This means no
more restrictions in mobile lighting.
