Once NS stopped using the shunters in the early 2000s seven of them have been repatriated to the<br />
UK. Of the seven four are of the later radio controlled version. Several of the locos are privately owned<br />
by BARs (see below) and are hired out to various industrial sites. The others are preserved or stored<br />
at preserved sites. It is not clear exactly which are fully preserved though the doyen of the class 601<br />
does fall into that category and is currently out of service in the museum at the Ribble Steam <strong>Railway</strong>.<br />
British American <strong>Railway</strong> Services Limited (BARS) is a British railway rolling stock hire, maintenance<br />
company, and railway owner in the United Kingdom. It was formed to acquire the assets of ECT Rail<br />
Holdings in 2008. Subsidiaries of British American include RMS Locotec, Weardale <strong>Railway</strong>, Dartmoor<br />
<strong>Railway</strong>, and Devon and Cornwall <strong>Railway</strong>. British American was formed by Iowa Pacific Holdings, an<br />
American shortline railroad holding company.<br />
