Saturday 28 th May 2011:
All that is left is a mid morning flight back to London. It was sad to leave such a wonderful country
where the trains run on time. The flight was once again only half full and this time I got a front seat
with plenty of legroom. Arriving at Heathrow I used the Piccadilly line to King’s Cross (its just as quick
as the Heathrow express taking into account the time changing at Paddington). Almost home! Not
quite, I am back in the UK and the wires are down between Peterborough and Grantham. Severe
delays! I finally arrived back in Newcastle at 23.30. I was home but there were busses waiting for the
Edinburgh and Glasgow passengers. Goodness knows what time they got home.
Light Rail, Metro & Tram News
Birmingham Midland Metro: The extension through the centre of Birmingham is unlikely to open
before 2015 due to problems diverting the numerous buses that use Corporation Street.
London Tramlink: Further to the report in Sep 2011 issue (page 5) the first of the 6 new Stadler built
Variotrams has been out on test in Eastern Germany on the Chemnitz system. No. 2554 is already in
Tramlink corporate colours.
Nottingham Express Transit: Following the agreement by the government to Phase 2 it is hoped two
further extensions to the system will begin in January 2012, coming into operation in late 2014. The
two lines will serve Clifton via Wilford and Chilwell via Beeston.
