‘The Old Curiosity Mystery Tour’ on the 3 rd December 2011 utilised the Hastings 6 car DEMU 1001.
Unfortunately it suffered an AWS failure requiring a change in plan and an unscheduled visit to
Tonbridge to pick up loco assistance. It is seen heading off to Ashford behind GBRf 73213 at 14.15.
The two wider EMU cars 70262 & 69337 can clearly be seen against the other narrow flat sided
Hastings line cars.
Editor’s Comments:
Happy New Year to you all and I hope Santa brought you what you wanted. Certainly Bombardier got
a pre Christmas lifeline with the award of the 130 EMU carriages for Southern. We won’t go into the
realms of why it is that UK civil servants love to uphold EU rules to the letter whilst others member
states correctly ‘bend’ them for their national interest. So with the political storm still raging over the
Thameslink contract awarded to Siemens, it was not surprising Bombardier got a sweetener. Let’s
hope more work stays in the UK with the other contracts yet to be decided.
With the cascade of DMUs around the country concluding ahead of the December timetable, there is
plenty to see, just need to get out ! Same applies to new Cl.70s for FL with four already here and
70017 due in the UK by the time you read this. Certainly the weather has been kinder over the festive
season than last year, particularly down south where I was spending Christmas & the New
Year…another whiskey soaked Hogmanay missed !! We should be back up north when you read this
and back to snow…romantic rather than damaging would be nice for a change.
Eastleigh Works Tour, Thurs 15 th March 2012:
All places are now taken, but we are operating a waiting list. So if anyone hasn’t returned their
application form and cheque / Postal Order by 31 st January then their place will be given to someone
on the waiting list. If you’ve been lucky enough to get a place please send in your application ASAP. It
will NOT be possible to pay on the day
New 2012 Books:
For new members and those who missed the announcement last month two new 2012 books have
been released and selling fast. The Wagon Book above is updated to the 1 st October 2011 and has
one new helpful feature in that wagons known to be stored are shown with the suffix (s). The Name
Directory last published in 2010 is updated to the 10 th November and has been reworked to iron out
the issues with advertising names and therefore better than ever. Duplicate names v numbers in Part
2 have also been removed. As it is the only such book on the market it is an invaluable reference
source and one used regularly by the editor. Full prices etc are shown on the rear cover. Order your
copies now via PayPal or from Carl by post.
The next new 2012 book to be released at the end of January will be the Combine, so get your orders
in as above.
Errata:
On page 25 last month under KWR Steam Gala I inadvertently listed 51218 as a DMU when it should
have been the 0-4-0 L&Y Pug.
Ramblings of a Rail Enthusiast
by David Spencer – 1964 Part 5
I try to provide extra detail on the items of traction shown in photos, other than number, date and
location as provided by Dave…so it’s my fault if errors creep in, ed.
June: Only one night after my week in Scotland I was off again overnight with D129 taking me to
Bristol Temple Meads then continuing on to Cardiff General behind D1045. 5673 took me up to
Quakers Yard to spend most of the day on the Pontypool Road to Neath line. First 3708 took me to
Ystrad Mynach and all the way back to Neath. Two buses got me back up to Aberdare via Rhigos then
3717 from Aberdare towards Pontypool Road and another amusing story.
0-6-0PT 9600 (w/d 09/65), Aberdare, 2 nd June 1964
I asked the driver for a ride and he refused, so I went back to the train and told the guard what a
miserable old sod the driver was and thought no more about it. Imagine my surprise when at Hengoed
the fireman was sent back to find me and invite me into the cab! I was thrilled as it meant I could travel
over Crumlin Viaduct on the footplate, it was then I discovered the train was not due to stop at
9
Hafodyrnys Platform but pushing my luck I asked and the driver slowed down to allow me to jump off.
My plan was to walk back over the viaduct and inspect the two long closed stations between Crumlin
(High Level) and Pontlanlfraith but failed. As I approached Crumlin Viaduct the signalman at first tried
to stop me but I was able to persuade him that I was harmless and he explained that they had to take
extra care because of the need to stop vandals and that he would telephone the Crumlin (High Level)
box to warn him. So I got across on footplate and by foot on the same day. I was well chuffed, but
when I got to Crumlin (High Level) I was invited into the box and talked to death so I never saw those
two closed stations except from passing trains. 4166 returned me to Hengoed and a DMU to
Caerphilly and another on the Senghenydd branch before returning to Cardiff and D101 back home.
D7029 Cardiff Central, 2 nd June 1964
(Preserved on the Severn Valley Railway, see photo in June 2011 issue)
On the 10 th after work I went to Dudley and
Dudley Port taking photos, then on Sunday 14 th I
got a bus to Kings Norton and walked to
Longbridge and then through the Austin complex
and along the now closed Halesowen line.
Rubery station was totally of Midland design but
the cast signs read Great Western and Midland
Joint (to be fair Stoke Works was totally Great
Western yet only served by Midland or LM
trains) and it was not long before I found out why
the line was closed, as rails had been lifted and
the track bed disappeared under a mountain of
mud. Now it would be called the M5 but then it
was thick gooey mud that I had to climb up and
over and then slither down the other side getting
into a filthy mess in the process. The track
resumed the other side and I continued to Dowry
Dell Viaduct (see photo right) and then on to
Hunnington station. At the Halesowen bypass
bridge I stopped taking photos as the remainder
was to remain open for some time and had
managed several trips between Halesowen and
Old Hill but I continued walking on up to Old Hill
in order to catch a train back home.
July: On the 1 st and after work went to Wednesbury and then a bus to Walsall to catch the 19:50 to
Dudley. From there I walked what is known locally as the Bumble Hole, the line to Old Hill via Windmill
End Halt. Traction was always an auto train or single car diesel as all the halts were small. Whilst
waiting for my train home I was looking at the remains of the Halesowen platform when a freight came
storming out of the tunnel and through the station hauled by 3635 and banked by 9614. I felt very
lucky to be in the right place at the right time.
East Grinstead Station / Bluebell Waste Removal by Trevor Roots:
As reported in the November 2011 issue the tracks approaching East Grinstead have been doubled
and the platforms extended. Both of which can be seen being completed in the photo below taken of
66722 ‘Sir Edward Watkin’ approaching with 20 empty MLAs on the 1 st December 2011.
The latest operation involved a digger filling a tipper lorry from almost the
centre of the site (seen in this and the following photo) which is then
moved to the side of the railhead and another digger filling the
wagons. There is now almost a complete channel cut through
the waste down to the original railway formation.
13
The photos opposite and below left are from Hall Pace Farm Bridge (eastern end). The photos above
and below right are from Imberhorne Lane Bridge (western end).
14
Further to the report in November 2011 issue another waste removal exercise, number 5 and the final
one of the year, was carried out over the 4 week period between the 14 th November and the 8 th
December 2011. This was extended from the planned 3 week period. The dramatic effect of the last
two operations can now be seen from the photos taken on the 1 st December 2011, particularly from
Imberhorne Lane Bridge..
The digger / tipper in the centre of the site, seen in both photos at last gives the perspective to the
length and the curve of the cutting. The mountain of clay capping can be seen on the north side of the
cutting.
In the spring the cutting will be stabilised and an assessment made as to the amount of material still
needed to removed prior to the landfill tax coming into force on 1 st April 2012. Drainage and trackwork
will be laid to enable the mountain of clay capping to be taken down the line later in the year by train to
be used elsewhere.
Misc News:
Another open access operator has proved to good to ignore and been bought out by Arriva. Unlike
Wrexham & Shropshire however GCT is still a going concern and will retain its own identity…for now.
Preservation Scene – Santa Special
The Nene Valley Railway ran Santa Specials prior to Christmas with Cl.14 D9520 top & tailing with
Railtour News
The Old Curiosity Mystery Tour, 3 rd Dec. 2011 by Mark Richards:
This tour on the Hastings Diesel unit 1001 on Saturday 3 rd December certainly lived up to its name
with even those of us who knew the itinerary of the ‘mystery part’ surprised by where we ended up
visiting! The tour started, as is usual, with an early morning departure from Hastings. I joined the train
at Bromley South and it seems that it here when things started to go wrong, although surely that must
have just been a coincidence. (Additional photos provided by Trevor Roots who intercepted the tour at
Tonbridge and was able to view the goings on in the West Yard)
The first incident into what was to become an eventful morning happened approaching Beckenham
Junction with the driver incorrectly offered the direct route via Kent House instead of the correct route
for our tour via the Beckenham Spur to the Hayes line. Fortunately the driver was able to stop and
contact the signaller at Victoria and after a short delay we were on our way again towards New
Beckenham. Shortly after, it was announced that due to an unspecified problem at Lewisham (never
did find out what it was) we would be diverted instead via the Ladywell Loop on to the Up Fast at
Parks Bridge Junction.
1001 sits at Cannon Street At 10.09
showing the ailing 60116 ‘Mountfield’
Mark Richards
16
Travelling at some speed on the fast, it was
soon apparent that there was a more serious
problem when an emergency brake application
brought the Hastings unit to an abrupt stand
near Tanners Hill Junction. This was due to an
AWS fault on the leading power car 60116
‘Mountfield’ which meant that the AWS warning
could not be cancelled by the driver causing the
emergency brake to be applied automatically. A
temporary repair or isolation of the AWS was
possible to allow us to resume our booked
itinerary to London Cannon Street. However,
considerable delay was caused to other
Southeastern services in the area especially as
the railtour had to be crossed via the Up Fast to
Up Slow crossovers at New Cross to ensure that
we were then on the ‘right side’ at North Kent
East Junction for the run through London Bridge
to Cannon Street.
What should have been a brisk turnaround in
Platform 7 at Cannon Street was not possible as
there were no platform staff available to dispatch
the train! This did fortunately offer the
opportunity for a quick photo of the unit at a
location where they would have once been a
very familiar sight.
From Cannon Street our booked route took us via the Greenwich line to Dartford and onwards to
Rochester via Gravesend. Needless to say by the time we had departed from Cannon Street we were
out of booked path and following an all stations service to Dartford, proceeding most of the way on
double yellow and single yellow aspects. At Plumstead, works are well advanced on the site of the exit
portal for Crossrail services from Central London to Abbey Wood. Further evidence of Crossrail
enabling works could be seen at Northfleet where the connection to the former Lafarge cement
terminal has been reinstated. This will be the terminus for trains carrying excavated spoil from the
Paddington portal tunnelling, starting next year.
At Rochester there was the opportunity to alight from the tour and visit the very popular Dickens
Christmas Festival or to stay on for the ‘mystery tour’ part of the day. The initial plan was to run to
Hastings via Strood, the Medway Valley, Ashford International and Rye. However power car 60116
was still suffering from its AWS problems and would be leading for most of the planned route
(following reversals at Strood and Paddock Wood). Additionally it had now developed an electrical
fault understood to be affecting the headlight. After some anxiety that the tour may be cancelled
altogether it was eventually decided that we would be permitted to run to Strood to reverse with power
car 60118 ‘Tunbridge Wells’ then leading to Tonbridge where a loco would be attached.
This part of the journey was itself not without incident with a change of aspect on a signal approaching
Cuxton bringing us to another abrupt halt whilst the situation was rectified with the signaller. On
departure, a spirited run was enjoyed along the rest of the Medway Valley with the necessary crawl
into Paddock Wood for the permanent speed restriction. The track layout here means that Up trains
from the Medway Valley must travel on the Down platform line through Paddock Wood, using the
crossover at the London end of the station to regain the Up road.
To allow the locomotive attachment to take place off the main line, the tour was de-trained at
Tonbridge before running into Tonbridge West Yard. A break of an hour here enabled liquid
refreshment to be taken at the local Wetherspoons. During the break GBRf 73213 was attached to
power car 60116 ‘Mountfield’ and brought the stock back into Platform 2 at 14.10 with departure a few
minutes down on the planned 14.00 restart. A lively run was enjoyed to Ashford International on one of
the longest sections of dead straight track on the UK railway network. Reversal at Ashford in Platform
1 was quickly undertaken, crossing the layout at the London end to take the Maidstone East line.
73213 draws 1001 out of Tonbridge West Yard at 14.10
Our booked photo stop at Maidstone East caused much bemusement to passengers waiting for the
service to Ashford International! Now back on schedule we ran via Otford Junction to Swanley where a
very rare reverse manoeuvre was undertaken. In order to get to the Down Chatham Main towards
Rochester, 1001 drew forward to the shunt signal beyond the London end of Platform 1. With 73213
again in charge, the rarely used crossover from the Up Chatham Fast to Platform 2 was taken to gain
the Down Chatham Main.
with 73213 on the rear, 1001 sits at Maidstone East at 15.34, Mark Richards
The return from Rochester to London Cannon Street was uneventful retracing the outward route as far
as Dartford and from here via Sidcup to Hither Green. This time we did run via Lewisham and the Up
Slow as booked to North Kent East Junction. After set down at Cannon Street, 73213 departed with
what must be an extremely rare loco hauled passenger train. We retraced our route to Lewisham then
via Ladywell to take the Beckenham Spur to Beckenham Junction. Favourable signals (and generous
pathing allowances) ensured that arrival at Bromley South was 20 mins up on schedule at 19.10
where I alighted from the tour. It was an enjoyable, interesting and eventful day. The problems
encountered along the way made it more interesting and the change of itinerary en route made the
mystery part just that little bit more mysterious!...and for me intending to photograph it at Hastings !, ed
Days Out
Devon Day Ranger 3 rd Dec 2011 by Kevin Bates:
The weekend of my self-imposed Devon exile started on Friday 2 nd December with a journey down the
M5 to an overcast Brixham. On arrival arrangements were quickly made to meet my travelling
companion (Colin Broomfield who some of you might remember from NREA and STARS) at Newton
Abbott for the 08.30 ride down to Plymouth. The aim of the day was to travel around on a Devon Day
Ranger, for the princely sum of £10. Unfortunately for me this necessitated a 07.13 start on the bus
into Paignton for the 08.06 connection. Arrival was at a dark damp Paignton station and for those who
haven’t had the pleasure the station is alongside the Dartmouth Steam Railway terminus (renamed
from Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway). The DSR is currently undergoing a rebuilding program
and in the gloom the surviving steel structure from the demolished station could be seen.
Just before 08.00 the level crossing was lowered for the arrival of 150221 to start the day’s adventure.
We left on time and after stops at Torquay and Tore we arrived in Newton Abbott at about 08.20. My
travelling companion alighted from a Cl.150 (going to Penzance) and with the 08.30 to Plymouth,
running 20 minutes late we decided to rejoin 150221 for the ride up to Exeter St David’s. So under a
brightening sky we travelled down the Teign along the spectacular sea wall at Dawlish and back up
the Exe estuary to St David’s. After alighting 150221 then reversed and carried on its journey down to
Exmouth. A quick glance at the departure board showed the next train out was to Plymouth and to our
great delight the approaching train was a HST with 43091 & 43016. On the depot at Exeter stood an
assortment of Cl.150s including several incomers transferred to FGW, ex-Silverlink 150121 and
150127, ex-Centro 150102 plus a couple of other unidentified ex-Centro units, LMT 153335 on hire
along with a Colas tamping machine.
ex –Centro 150102 & LMT 153325 (on hire) stand on Exeter Depot at 10.10
We were soon enjoying a relaxing ride back along the sea wall then through Newton Abbot and on to
Totnes. On arrival at Totnes, the flexibility of the days plans took over again as we de-trained and
headed of f for refreshments in the excellent café in the former station signal box. If you have never
been it is an excellent place to view the line and enjoy coffee and sausage baps. After the reviving
supplies the next journey was quickly determined and we were soon on a Voyager back to Newton
Abbott for a quick change over to catch a connection down to Plymouth. It was with much sadness we
saw the approach of a Voyager and not an HST, but a quick glance at the board showed this was
26
unning late and the HST was approx 5 minutes behind, which was just as well as the Voyager was
packed to gunnels. So very soon were we aboard the XC HST and on our way to Plymouth with 43357
& 43132. The journey down was under caution as we were following the Voyager and so took a little
longer than normal. Very little was on show as we passed Laira depot apart from some FGW
carriages. We alighted at Plymouth in glorious sunshine to look out across the numerous empty
platforms with comments of “where are all the trains” and what must it have been like in the hey-day.
After a couple of pictures of a FGW HST as it paused to take on passengers it was back onto the XC
HST and off back to Totnes to see the RHTT which was due about 13.30. Arrival back in Totnes was
around 12.45 and we once again had coffee to keep us going. Then back to the serious business and
it was up on to the footbridge to snap a couple of HST’s and 150123 which was heading for Plymouth,
very soon the jungle telegraph was in operation with phone buzzing to say the RHTT was on its way,
so off we trotted down to the road bridge in preparation . The RHTT came through about 13.30
headed by a cleanish 66061 (see photo below) and trailing a very grubby looking 66139 and
surprisingly it traversed the station line and not the through line before heading off to St. Blazey. With
snaps secured we headed off to gain transport back to Exeter and once again we were treated to a
HST into the Counties capital. And all I can say is the journey was worth it, with great views over the
Teign and Exe estuaries and along the sea wall.
Once back into Exeter we had about 45 minutes before the train back to Paignton and the end of my
ranger day. Whilst on the platforms we snapped a couple of Cl.159s arriving and departing to London
and an old friend from Centro, 150102 which came off the depot to set back for its run down to
Paignton. And this is the point at which we made our mistake. Colin mentioned his wife would be on
the next train back to Paignton from Exmouth whilst we were snapping 150102 which were departing
before said train. So with that in mind we failed to board the ex-Centro 150102 which promptly
departed into the failing light...what a mistake that turned out to be. Oh well the train off Exmouth
would soon be here and soon there it was descending the curve into St David’s and alas it was only a
2 car unit which was imitating a train through Delhi with the amount of passengers. So we squeezed in
27
and soon were on our way stopping at all stations and thankfully at Teignmouth (where I said goodbye
to Colin) I finally obtained a seat for the rest of the journey back to a gloomy Paignton. Although it was
nice to catch up with some familiar ex-Centro 150’s I can’t help feeling that the Cl.142/143s were
better suited to the scenic routes around Dawlish with their better seat and window layouts affording
better views....totally agree for all their other problems, ed.
For the record the Devon Day Ranger covers the lines up to Tiverton Parkway, Barnstaple, Administer,
Exmouth, Plymouth, Gunnislake and Paignton and proved good value for £10.
JAPAN, 12 th -27 th May 2011 - Part 5 (final):
Friday 27 th May 2011:
The aim today is to get back to Tokyo then out to the airport hotel ready for tomorrows flight home.
Once again departing Senzu but we got off at Shin Kanaya for a tour of the Oigawa railway
workshops. Four of their steam locomotives were there, one stored, C12 164. Our guide told us it was
not allowed to go and photograph it being alongside the running line...this was after I had already been
and photographed it !! The fifth steam locomotive worked into the station on a passenger train.
Scattered around the station area were three of the old electrics. Outside the station is a small railway
museum that had 2 private steam locomotives on display, numbers 1 and 1275.
Now back to Kanaya to change for our train to Tokyo where we had about 3 hours free time before
heading to the airport. I still had not seen as many locomotives as I would have liked and when I was
here 5 years ago I visited a depot at Shin Kawzsaki, about 20 minutes out of Tokyo so I decided to go
there and 5 of the group came with me. This is quite good as there are a lot of locomotives stabled in
the station area with a road on both sides of the tracks joined by an overbridge, all of which are good
vantage points. The depot itself was about a quarter of a mile from the station so we walked to it and
saw more from a footbridge. We did not attempt to enter, so happy with that, we returned to Tokyo to
catch the train to our hotel.
on the whole tour the best selection of
locomotives together was at Shin Kawzsaki
depot (Tokyo) where EF64 1003 is seen
Saturday 28 th May 2011:
All that is left is a mid morning flight back to London. It was sad to leave such a wonderful country
where the trains run on time. The flight was once again only half full and this time I got a front seat
with plenty of legroom. Arriving at Heathrow I used the Piccadilly line to King’s Cross (its just as quick
as the Heathrow express taking into account the time changing at Paddington). Almost home! Not
quite, I am back in the UK and the wires are down between Peterborough and Grantham. Severe
delays! I finally arrived back in Newcastle at 23.30. I was home but there were busses waiting for the
Edinburgh and Glasgow passengers. Goodness knows what time they got home.
Light Rail, Metro & Tram News
Birmingham Midland Metro: The extension through the centre of Birmingham is unlikely to open
before 2015 due to problems diverting the numerous buses that use Corporation Street.
London Tramlink: Further to the report in Sep 2011 issue (page 5) the first of the 6 new Stadler built
Variotrams has been out on test in Eastern Germany on the Chemnitz system. No. 2554 is already in
Tramlink corporate colours.
Nottingham Express Transit: Following the agreement by the government to Phase 2 it is hoped two
further extensions to the system will begin in January 2012, coming into operation in late 2014. The
two lines will serve Clifton via Wilford and Chilwell via Beeston.
Dutch Class 600 Shunters in the UK
by Trevor Roots
The Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) Cl.600 were built for shunting duties in the Netherlands and are of
a similar design to BR Cl.11. Sixty-five of the locomotives were built, numbered 601-665 by English
Electric between 1950-1957 at either Dick Kerr & Co. Works, Preston (601-610) or Vulcan Foundry
Works, Newton-le-Willows (611-663). Twenty-three locomotives were later fitted with radio remotecontrol,
and renumbered in the range 671-693.
Specs: English Electric 6KT engines, 143kn tractive effort, 47t weight and a top speed of 19mph.
Once NS stopped using the shunters in the early 2000s seven of them have been repatriated to the
UK. Of the seven four are of the later radio controlled version. Several of the locos are privately owned
by BARs (see below) and are hired out to various industrial sites. The others are preserved or stored
at preserved sites. It is not clear exactly which are fully preserved though the doyen of the class 601
does fall into that category and is currently out of service in the museum at the Ribble Steam Railway.
British American Railway Services Limited (BARS) is a British railway rolling stock hire, maintenance
company, and railway owner in the United Kingdom. It was formed to acquire the assets of ECT Rail
Holdings in 2008. Subsidiaries of British American include RMS Locotec, Weardale Railway, Dartmoor
Railway, and Devon and Cornwall Railway. British American was formed by Iowa Pacific Holdings, an
American shortline railroad holding company.
ICRS Publications
Two new 2012 editions are now out and selling like hot cakes, UK Wagons and UK Name Directory. The latter has
been reworked to be even more comprehensive than before and is the only such book currently on the market. It is
also a small print run as are the current 2011 editions of UK Locomotives, Diesel Units, Electric Units and Irish
Railways, so if you don’t want to miss out, order yours now. The individual books have additional carriage number to
unit number cross ref tables, not found in the Combine and are very useful. As for future titles, an eagerly awaited
updated Ultimate Sighting File is in preparation for release during 2012 and will combine all locos into one book
rather than the 3 previously published.
Books can be ordered online via PayPal at www.icrs.org.uk or by post from Carl Watson, ICRS Publications,
14, Partridge Gardens, Waterlooville, Hampshire PO8 9XG (please made cheque / PO payable to ICRS).
