Challenges and Opportunities
Welcome Messages
“There is a country in the world situated right in the sun’s path, a
native of the night”.
Pedro Mir
Cooperativa Nacional de Seguros, Coop-Seguros Inc., extends
the warmest welcome to you for the Annual Meeting of the
Latin American Reinsurance Group – LARG 2013 hosted on this
occasion in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the
city of the first Spanish Government in the New World and the
city with the largest population in the Caribbean.
We are honoured to welcome you as part of this international
event that flies the flag for the Cooperative movement and
its unquestionable contribution to the world economy. The
Dominican Republic offers over 500 years of history bathed by
the incomparable turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea; from
the hieroglyphics of the Taino Indians, passing through the
monuments of the Colonial era to modern buildings just a few
steps from the beach. The warmth of our people with a
never-ending smile, will make you feel that the time flies.
“The content
of this year’s
meeting will more
than meet your
expectations...”
We are confident that the content of this year’s meeting will
more than meet your expectations as we have developed a
comprehensive agenda that includes issues related to insurance
and reinsurance, delivered by top-level speakers.
Thank you for honouring us with your visit to our humble “half
island”, we will do everything possible to make you feel at home!
Arlene Sabaris de León
General Manager, Coop-Seguros Inc.
The International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation
(ICMIF) welcomes all delegates to the 2013 Annual Meeting of
the Latin American Reinsurance Group (LARG).
The Annual Meeting brings together LARG members, reinsurers,
the group’s broker and other supporting organisations and this
event is your opportunity to network, share, learn and teach with
other members of the group.
The agenda for the LARG Annual Meeting evolves every year
and this year, for the first time, we have included a Discussion
Panel session to address the future challenges and opportunities
for the LARG group. This is in addition to the important regular
elements such as strategic planning, product knowledge,
technical training and reinsurance treaty negotiations.
The LARG group of members has always been a shining example
of the success which can be achieved when ICMIF members
work together towards common goals. In 2013 LARG has grown
once again, both in terms of membership (now 16 members)
and in premium income. This growth is also reflected across the
wider cooperative and mutual insurance sector both in Latin
America and globally.
In statistics recently published by ICMIF in the Global Mutual
Market Share 2011, there was an impressive 20% growth
reported in the total mutual and cooperative market share in
Latin America, up from 8.7% in 2007 to 10.4% in 2011. In fact, on
a global level, mutual and cooperative insurers are significantly
outperforming the total insurance market and indeed are the
fastest-growing part of the global insurance market since the
financial crisis of 2007-2008.
“The LARG group of
members has always
been a shining example
of the success which
can be achieved when
ICMIF members work
together...”
The future success and achievements of the LARG is dependent
on your continued collaboration as a group. I encourage you to
make the most of the next few days together in Santo Domingo;
talking with other delegates and making contacts that will be
beneficial to you and your companies in the future.
I wish you all a pleasant stay in the beautiful country of the
Dominican Republic and an enriching and rewarding time at the
2013 LARG Annual Meeting.
de Campo before ending our evening at the Neptune
Restaurant, where you can enjoy the beach and dancing
to the rhythm of merengue.
Cueva de las Maravillas
Along trails and through special entrances you will
learn about these spectacular rock formations and the
stunning pictorial gallery of mythological gods, horses,
dragons and angels in the Cueva de las Maravillas or the
“Cave of Wonders”. The mirror of water, the large panel,
the area of the castle, the throne, and the gallery of the
shadows are among the attractions of this tour of about
45 minutes.
Rock formations dating back hundreds of thousands of
years have acquired whimsical figures over time which
allow your imagination to wander as to who or what they
could be.
At the back of the room, in a prominent place and yet
completely isolated from the rest of the paintings in the
cave you will be amazed by the sight of a “mural” of about
three meters long and two meters high which depicts a
funeral rite, one of the masterpieces of the Taino Indian
cave paintings.
Altos de Chavón
Altos de Chavón is an ancient Mediterranean village built
above the Chavón River and is home to a Cultural Centre,
the national Archaeological Museum, an amphitheater
and the so-called “City of Artists”.
Its construction began in 1976 when the opening of a
road had to be blasted through a mountain of stone.
Charles Bludhorn, former Chairman of Paramount
Pictures, had the idea of using the stones to build a
sixteenth century Mediterranean village. The construction
was entrusted to a former Paramount Pictures set
designer, Roberto Copa who constructed his vision of a
medieval Italian town. The Chavón River has been the
location for a number of famous movies.
Altos de Chavón houses a school of design which is
affiliated with the Parsons School of Design in New York
and also with other design schools which are located in
France and Japan.
Since its inception Altos de Chavón has always been
open to the public, allowing Dominicans and tourists
alike to enjoy its streets, sights and restaurants.
