UV lamp business
UV Curing
Introduction
Source: phoseon
• UV working principle:
– UV are used to produce a chemical reaction that polymerizes a combination of chemical components (typically
monomers, oligomers and photoinitiators). These materials may be under the form of a coating, adhesive, ink or
some other product.
• UV curing applications :
– Market segmentation: a lot of different applications with various UV light requirements
• Printing (sheet-fed offset, flexo, inkjet printing…) : about xx to xx % of the market. Inkjet represent about xx % of the total
market.
• Industrial coating (wood, plastic, metal and other) : xx to xx %
• Adhesives that include the spot curing market : xx to xx % of the market
– Global CAGR 2011-2015 : + xx %
• LED introduction: 2002 for adhesives and coatings, 2007 for inkjet.
• LED application status:
– Strong growth phase (CAGR 2011-2016 > xx %). With the UV LED power increase, the technology is now used in a
wide range of applications
• Current LED applications:
– Inkjet : this is the main market for UV LED thanks to the following advantages : short distance between the UV
source and the substrate, the need for cold UV source, the dynamic inkjet market with new products every two
years. It is expected that in 5 years 90 % of the curing systems will use UV LED.
– Others are low speed coating and adhesive applications (specially spot curing applications).
– In 2011, it is expected that almost xx % of UV curing will be accessible to UV LEDs thanks to the availability of high
power (8 to 16 W/cm2) and wide source (up to 2m).
– New portable applications in the field where lightweight and compactness is a key feature : wood or automotive
coating repair.
– UV LED curing systems vary from x to xx k$ with an average price at xx k$
