Charger Coaching Staff
2
Underneath the sly smile and casual demeanor lies the
heart of a champion and competitor in Hillsdale College volleyball
coach Chris Gravel. Those are traits he wants his players
to approach each day with, even if they aren’t easily visible
on the surface with the coach.
Now entering his 13th season as the head coach of the
program, Gravel has guided the Chargers into the upper echelon
of Division II volleyball programs nationwide. He has
led Hillsdale to an overall record of 55-10 and 32-2 in the
GLIAC over the past two seasons.
“Anyone who is in coaching understands that success gets
traced back to the players you have,” Gravel said. “I’ve been
extremely fortunate to have great players who are also great
people throughout my time here at Hillsdale.”
Gravel is the volleyball program’s all-time winningest
coach, and won a milestone 200th match of his career on Sept.
30, 2006 vs. Northern Michigan. He has been named GLIAC
Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2006.
With the success came plenty of national attention last year,
both for Gravel and the program at large. But through it all, he
maintained the humble and lighthearted personality that make
him the kind of coach players love to play for.
Gravel has guided the Chargers into the GLIAC postseason
tournament in 10 of his first 11 seasons as coach. His teams
have also qualified for the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament
four years in a row, an accomplishment only matched
only by Ashland and Grand Valley State in the conference.
Prior to taking over the Charger program, Gravel served
as an assistant coach at fellow GLIAC schools Grand Valley
and Wayne State. A 1990 graduate of Grand Valley, Gravel has
also coached at the club and high school level in Jenison and
Kalamazoo.
Gravel doesn’t have to look far for great support from his
coaching staff. His wife of 11 years, associate head coach
Stephanie Gravel is also in her 13th year on the Charger volleyball
coaching staff. Stephanie played collegiately at Schoolcraft
College in Livonia, later transferring to Grand Valley where
she was a two-year captain for the Lakers. Stephanie’s teams at
Schoolcraft qualified for the national tournament twice during
her career there. Stephanie does extensive traveling, recruiting
and fundraising for the volleyball program. She works
closely with players on technique, training and teamwork concepts.
She is also in charge of countless behind-the-scenes tasks,
including player counseling, travel accommodations, camp
promotions and recruiting year-round. Stephanie also has
experience as head coach at Grandville and Reading High
Schools. Later in her playing career, Stephanie played for the
MPVA (Michigan Professional Volleyball Association), where
she achieved a No. 13 personal ranking as a player on tour. In
high school, she was an All-State and All-Conference player
at Brighton High School.
Volleyball has played a big part in Stephanie’s life, but also
the lives of her family members. Stephanie’s brother David
Jandasek, was an All-American setter for the men’s volleyball
team at Ohio State University and played professionally overseas.
Her father Joe still competes in open events around the
country, and has won many individual and team awards past
his 60 th birthday. Chris and Steph are the proud parents of
seven-year-old Brooklynn.
Rick Langston is entering his seventh season as assistant
coach of the Chargers. Langston is a day-to-day presence at
Charger matches and practices. He works diligently on keeping
drills on task in practice. When it comes to match times,
Langston sets up and organizes unique stat-keeping and video
programs that assist Chris and Stephanie with evaluating players’
performances. Langston played golf at Olivet College,
where he was a Division III All-American. He resides in
Jonesville with his wife Johncie and children Drew, 9, and
Lauren, 5.
Chris Gravel presided over the two most successful seasons in Charger
volleyball history in 2006 and 2007. Assisting him on the sidelines are his
wife, associate coach Stephanie Gravel (above right) and assistant coach
Rick Langston (below, left).
Claudette Charney enters her seventh season carrying several important
roles on the Hillsdale College athletic department staff.
Charney is the school’s women’s basketball
coach and also serves as associate athletic director
and senior woman administrator. In addition to
Charney has coached women’s college basketball
in Michigan for more than 20 years, and in
2006-07, won her 400th game as head coach. She is
the Chargers’ all-time winningest women’s basketball
coach, and in 2007-08, guided the team to its
best season ever, finishing with a 23-5 mark and an appearance at the
NCAA Division II regionals.
The only two All-American players in Hillsdale College women’s basketball
history have earned those honors while Charney was the head coach.
Stephanie Heid was named All-American following the 2002-03 season,
and still holds many career records for the Chargers.
In 2007-08, Katie Cezat was named First-Team All-American by
Daktronics as well as the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Cezat
shattered 10 single-game and single-season records under Charney’s
tuteledge.
One of the most experienced coaches and administrators in the entire
conference, Charney has coached women’s basketball in the GLIAC for
more than 20 years, also serving as head coach at Saginaw Valley State and
Grand Valley State.
Charney and her husband, Dr. Mark Kosciuszko, reside in Hillsdale
with their beloved dog Maggie.
2008 Season Preview
Chargers intent on staying in the
nation’s elite with young team in 2008
4
The past two years have seen unprecedented success for the Hillsdale College
volleyball team. Back-to-back GLIAC South Division titles. A combined wonloss
record of 55-10. Two GLIAC Players of the Year. Two First-Team All-
Americans. Continued success in the classroom. Back-to-back appearances in
the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.
Time to sit back, relax and enjoy the success, right? Not for head coach Chris
Gravel, who continues to strive for the ultimate goal, a national championship.
“I want to bring a national title to this program,” Gravel states. “We’ve been
taking some very positive steps towards that goal with the success we’ve had the
past few years. But we aren’t there yet, and I feel like the roster we have coming
into this season can take that next step forward.”
The 2007 Charger volleyball team finished 26-8, once again winning the
GLIAC South Division title while advancing to the GLIAC Tournament
Championship Match for the first time in school history. That team graduated
four players, including all-time digs leader Megan Howard, and First-Team All-
American Melissa Bartlett. But the 2008 squad has the talent and drive to live up
to the achievements of the teams that preceded them.
The Chargers return four primary starters from last year’s team, led by twotime
First-Team All-GLIAC setter Stephanie Booms. With around 700 assists
this season, Booms will become Hillsdale’s all-time leader in assists, but that only
begins to describe the role she will play with a relatively young team.
Booms, along with OH Elisse Shank and DS Jamie Murray, are the team’s
only seniors. Booms was a co-captain of last year’s team, and is a natural leader
on and off the court. She is a technically brilliant player who has grown into her
leadership role she’ll carry this season.
Murray has shown continuous improvement in her game since joining the
team before the 2005 season, culminating in her being named honorable mention
All-GLIAC in 2007. She improved her passing and court coverage last season,
and saw significant time as a setter. She’s also one of the team’s most efficient
servers.
Shank improved greatly in the second half of last season at the right-side
and outside hitter. She is a versatile player who can play in both the front and
back rows.
Junior OH Kittrick Smith was named Second-Team All-GLIAC last season
after carrying a much bigger offensive load for the team. Her 365 kills were
ninth-most in a single season in school history, and her game showed more
maturity in all areas. Smith figures to carry more leadership responsbilities with
this team as well.
Junior middle hitters Emily Bennett and Hannah Barrett are also on a
fast-improvement track. After hardly playing at all as a freshman in 2006,
Bennett was a pleasant surprise in 2007, leading the team in hitting percentage.
Barrett enjoyed an excellent spring season, using her length and athleticism to
become a more effective middle.
Last year’s freshman class holds plenty of promise for Hillsdale as those four
players mature into sophomores this season. Amanda Geelhoed emerged as the
team’s strongest middle hitter in spring practice, and could make the biggest leap
on the team this season. She has excellent court awareness and is technically
sound.
Sophomore Amanda Bigney sent notice at the end of last season that she’s
going to be a player to be reckoned with this season. She had a career-high 24 kills
in the team’s regional loss to Indianapolis, and showed signs of being an unstoppable
force from her outside hitter position. She has great leaping ability and raw
power. With more experience, Bigney could take her place among the GLIAC’s
most lethal offensive players this season.
Right-side hitter Rachel VanderWall brings a multitude of skills to the
team, and her versatility will be very valuable this season. VanderWall is one of
five players on the team to have been a part of a state championship team in high
school, and that winning pedigree has played a big part in the Chargers’ success
in recent years.
Defensive specialist Sydney Dow jumped into the playing rotation right
2008 GLIAC Preseason Poll
Coaches Pick Grand Valley State, Hillsdale to
Win 2008 GLIAC Volleyball Divisional Titles
Bay City, Mich. -- The head volleyball coaches of the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) chose Grand Valley
State University to win the North Division and Hillsdale College to
win the South Division in preseason balloting.
Grand Valley State, the 2007 North Division and GLIAC
Tournament champion, received 24 points, including four of the five
first-place votes it was eligible for. The Lakers edged out Northern
Michigan University, who received 18 points and the only other two
first-place votes. Ferris State University and Michigan Technological
University both ended up with 16 points in a tie for the third slot.
Saginaw Valley State University finished with 11 points in
the five spot, followed by Lake Superior State University in sixth
place with five points.
Hillsdale College, after winning the South Division last season,
received 23 points along with three first-place votes for the top
spot in this year’s preseason poll. Ashland University finished just
one point behind Hillsdale with 22 points for the second-place slot,
including three first-place votes as well.
Northwood University finished in third-place with 17 points,
followed by the University of Findlay with 13 points in fourth-place,
Wayne State University in fifth-place with 10 points, and Tiffin University
rounding out the South Division in sixth place with five points.
Each of the GLIAC’s 12 coaches voted for the division in
which they play, but were not allowed to vote for their own team.
First-place votes were worth five points, second-place were worth
four, etc.
GLIAC play opens-up on Sept. 10 with Tiffin University
playing at the University of Findlay in a 7:30pm contest. The GLIAC
Tournament quarterfinals will begin Nov. 12 at campus sites, with
the semifinals and finals taking place Nov. 15-16 at the campus of
the highest remaining seed.
away as a true freshman in 2007, giving the team
a steady back-row presence.. But Dow gave the
team excellent defensive play, energy and serving
ability all season.
Coach Gravel said he is extremely excited to
begin working with the incoming freshman class,
a group of five players he calls as good a class as
he’s recruited here. It’s a class that provides depth
and considerable talent at every position on the
court.
One player who didn’t have to travel far to
join the program is middle hitter Clara
Leutheuser. She played her prep volleyball at
Hillsdale Academy, and has excellent height,
leaping ability and toughness. She led her high
school team to back-to-back regional titles.
The player coming to Hillsdale from the
furthest distance away is also one of the most
highly decorated players to join the program in
recent years. Setter Apryl Schmucker is a twotime
Kansas 1A Player of the Year, and was
regarded as one of the top setting prospects in the
entire Midwest. Like Booms, Schmucker is also a
capable right-side hitter.
Howard was regarded as the best libero in
school history, but has now graduated. Taking up
her position and jersey number (4) is Morgan
Podkul, who hails from Mishawaka, Indiana.
Podkul has the ability to challenge for a starting
spot right away this season.
Two Michigan-born players come to the team
fresh off state championships at the high school
level. Middle hitter Ashlee Crowder was a finalist
for Miss Volleyball before leading Jenison High
School to a Class A title last fall. The addition of
Crowder makes middle hitter one of the deepest
and most talent-laden positions
on the team.
Brogan Wells also finished
her high school career on the
highest of notes, leading
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep to
its first-ever state volleyball
title. Wells brings heart, hustle,
desire and a winning attitude
to the team, and is capable of
playing several positions,
including libero, setter and
defensive specialist.
Welcome to Hillsdale College Volleyball
The players on the Hillsdale College volleyball team
know when it’s time to have fun, and when it’s time to
work. The team carries itself with discipline and a
high-end work ethic on the court, led by head coach
Chris Gravel (above). Coach Gravel demands nothing
less from the players during games and practices.
But this is a group that works hard and can have a
good time away from the court (pictures below and
above right). Freshman Apryl Schmucker (far right,
picture below) made fast friends with teammates
Stephanie Booms (left) and Amanda Geelhoed
(middle) during her official visit last year. Despite the
intense practice and game schedule, the girls always
find time for things like “The Raptor” (top right).
Even at the team’s youth camp, Hannah Barrett (bottom
right, at left) and Booms set aside time for fun.
2008 Hillsdale College Volleyball Golf Outing
Friday, June 6, 2008
Grande Golf Course - Jackson, Mich.
Above, the baseball program demonstrates
their support for the volleyball
program. Head baseball
coach Paul Noce (left) was joined in
this group by assistant coach, and
2006 Hillsdale College graduate,
Andy Lovell. Below, freshman Brogan
Wells (left) learns the technique
of “The Raptor” from teammates
Rachel VanderWall (center) and
Amanda Geelhoed (right).
At left, parents Dan
Geelhoed (red shirt) and
Bret VanderWal (blue shirt)
are part of this foursome
that played at the golf outing.
Below center, senior
Jamie Murray (gray shirt)
is joined by Sydney Dow,
More than 50 golfers turned
out to this year’s golf outing
to enjoy a round under a hot
June sun in Jackson, Michigan.
2006 Brazil Trip
In the spring of 2006, players and coaches on the Hillsdale College volleyball team took a trip they will never
forget. For eight days, they played in, and toured through, the country of Brazil. Along the way, the team played
some tough competition, saw once-in-a-lifetime sites, and sampled food and culture unlike any they had ever
experienced before. Below is a photo tour of the team’s trip.
Charger All-Americans
In each of the past two seasons, Hillsdale College’s volleyball team has been blessed with some incredible individual
performances, along with a 55-10 overall record. In 2006, Taryn Rudland became the first player in the program’s history to
be named First-Team All-American. It took exactly one year for another player to achieve that honor, which Melissa Bartlett
did in 2007. Both players were named GLIAC Player of the Year, and each were named First-Team All-Region.
Volleyball officials’ signals

2006 Postseason in Review
During the month of November 2006, Hillsdale College was host to two postseason volleyball tournaments for the
first time. On November 3-4, Hillsdale hosted the 2006 GLIAC Volleyball Tournament for the first time. The Chargers
hosted the tournament by virtue of their 17-0 GLIAC record, and a first-round 3-0 victory over Northern Michigan
University. The following weekend, Hillsdale hosted the 2006 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Volleyball
Tournament. Hillsdale finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region. It was the first time in school
history that Hillsdale hosted an NCAA Division II regional event in a team sport.
Hillsdale made it to the semifinals of both tournaments, losing each time to a red-hot Ashland team that went on
to win both the GLIAC championship and the regional championship.
Both tournaments were a rousing success. Crowds regularly exceeded 600, peaking at nearly 1,000 for the Chargers’
regional semifinal match vs. Ashland on Friday, November 10. It was the largest crowd to ever watch a Hillsdale College
volleyball match at home. The crowds were deafening, and lines to get into the sports complex extended out onto Oak
Street before the Chargers played.
Although the results of that last match didn’t go the way the Charger players and coaches planned, it was a grand
way to wrap up an unforgettable season.
2004: The arrival
Anytime a sports program “breaks through” to a new level of
success, it often happens as the result of just one game. That can
accurately describe what happened to the Hillsdale College volleyball
team very early in the 2004 season.
During the team’s first tournament of the season, it knocked
off North Alabama, the 2003 Division II national champions. That
win set the stage for the first-ever NCAA Division II volleyball
regional tournament appearance for the program later that season.
On Sept. 28, Hillsdale entered the national rankings for the
first time in its program’s history. The accolade came at a point in
the schedule when the Chargers had won eight straight games and
were 12-2 overall, fresh off a 3-0 win over Tiffin University.
The Chargers went on to finish in second place in the GLIAC
South Division with a 12-5 conference mark. Another signature
win by the team during the regular season came on Oct. 9 when it
defeated 14th-ranked Northern Michigan 3-2 at home.
But no win was as dramatic for the team as the one it had in the
first round of the GLIAC Tournament. Facing arch-rival Findlay,
Hillsdale advanced to the tournament semifinals with a 3-0 sweep,
but the game score did not indicate the epic nature of the match.
The Chargers set a school record for points in a single game with
an incredible 40-38 triumph over the Oilers in the opening game
of the match. The next two games were just as close, with Hillsdale
winning by identical scores of 30-28.
After losing in the GLIAC semifinals, Hillsdale earned its first
bid to the NCAA tournament, where it lost to Northern Michigan,
3-0.
Sophomore right-side hitter Becky Grzegorski was named
First-Team All-GLIAC, while setter Karin Poschke and middle hitter
Taryn Rudland made the Second Team.

Hillsdale College’s NCAA Tournament Teams
2005: They’re baaack
With just two seniors and two freshmen, the 2005 Hillsdale
College volleyball team was one that grew and matured together
as the season progressed. It transitioned from a team learning
what success was, into learning what it took to be consistently
successful.
Some of the respect the team earned in 2004 paid off for this
2005 squad. The Chargers were consistently ranked in the top
eight in the region, and earned that kind of respect by playing
some outstanding teams in its non-league schedule. Three of the
team’s first four losses came to nationally ranked teams like Southern
Illinois-Edwardsville, Nebraska-Omaha and Minnesota-
Duluth. The team came back to post a perfect 4-0 mark at the
University of Findlay Tournament in early September.
Hillsdale ended the regular season with three straight wins,
then gutted out a 3-2 win over Findlay on the road in the first
round of the GLIAC Tournament. Playing without two key contributors,
the Chargers were down 2-1, but won game four, setting
up a fifth game that seemed inevitable from the start. That game
was tied 13-13 when Becky Grzegorski had a kill, followed by a
Findlay net violation that ended the match and sparked a big
Hillsdale celebration on the court.
Hillsdale would lose to eventual national champion Grand
Valley State in the GLIAC semifinals, and bowed out of the NCAA
tournament after a loss in Allendale to Rockhurst.
Junior Taryn Rudland was named First-Team All-GLIAC for
the second time in her career, while Katherine Jones (Second Team)
and freshman Stephanie Booms (honorable mention) also netted
all-conference recognition. The awards for those players, as well
as the team’s success, would set the stage for an avalanche of success
that would follow in 2006.
2006: The winning streak
Hillsdale College has seen a lot of success among its sports
teams in the 100-plus year history of athletics. But few teams have
ever matched the excellence displayed by the 2006 Charger volleyball
team.
History was made on an almost weekly basis by this team,
which finished 29-2 overall and was ranked as high as No. 3 in the
nation. The team won the GLIAC South Division title, hosted the
GLIAC Tournament for the first time, and would go on to host the
NCAA Division II Regional Tournament for the first time.
The Chargers were a perfect blend of depth, talent and toughness,
a team in possession of no weaknesses. Hillsdale started the
season winning its first 28 consecutive matches, 20 of those by 3-0
sweeps.
Highlighting that perfect regular season was a visit to Allendale
on Saturday, Oct. 7. The home court of Grand Valley State had
been a house of horrors for the Chargers over the years, as was the
team calling that court its home. Hillsdale hadn’t beaten Grand
Valley since October 18, 1989, but that streak would come to a
screeching halt on this day, as the Chargers pounded the defending
national champions, 3-0. Hillsdale won the first two games by
a combined 21 points in the victory.
Nearly 1,000 fans packed the Jesse Philips Arena on Friday,
Nov. 10 when the Chargers hosted Ashland in the regional semifinals.
It was the largest crowd to ever watch a volleyball match in
the arena, and represented the deepest the team ever advanced in
the national tournament. A 3-0 loss to an Eagles team playing at
an unbelievably high level ended this most amazing of seasons.
Senior Taryn Rudland was named First-Team All-American,
becoming the first Charger volleyball player to ever earn such an
honor. She was also the GLIAC Player of the Year and shared First-
Team All-GLIAC honors with sophomore setter Stephanie Booms.

Hillsdale College’s NCAA Tournament Teams
2007: Division dominance
How does a team follow up a season like the Hillsdale College
volleyball squad had in 2006? By not dwelling on that season and
establishing a legacy of its own.
The 2007 Chargers repeated as GLIAC South Division champions
and made their fourth straight appearance in the NCAA
Division II regional tournament. Over the past two years, Hillsdale
is 55-10 overall and 32-2 in the GLIAC, both ranking first among
all conference teams in that span.
With rock-steady seniors like libero Megan Howard and outside
hitter Melissa Bartlett, the Chargers had two of the best players
at key positions in the GLIAC. Howard would become
Hillsdale’s all-time leader in career digs and was named Second-
Team All-GLIAC.
Bartlett was one of the most powerful hitters in the nation,
and finished fourth nationally in total kills with 635. She was named
First-Team All-American by both Daktronics and the AVCA, in
addition to being the second straight Hillsdale College player to
be named GLIAC Player of the Year.
Complementing the team’s older players was a precocious group
of underclassmen, highlighted by a diversely talented freshman
class. Outside hitter Amanda Bigney made a big statement in the
team’s regional loss to Indianapolis, leading the team with 24 kills
and proving to be completely unstoppable vs. a team that was the
GLVC regular season champions.
Sophomore Kittrick Smith stepped her game up to a new level
in her second year, finishing with the seventh-most kills in a single
season in school history and being named Second-Team All-
GLIAC.
This team also exorcised demons from 2006, when it defeated
Ashland three times, including the GLIAC tournament semifinals.
The Eagles were the only team to beat Hillsdale in 2006.
