Samples Scholarships Awarded
The first-ever J.K. Samples Scholarships were awarded by the Hanover Education Foundation
this spring. Twelve deserving seniors were awarded $3,000 each for a total of $36,000.
These scholarships were a result of a $707,291.18 bequest to the school district by J. K.
Samples and his wife, Vada. Mr. Samples served as the Superintendent of Hanover County
Public Schools from 1965-1980. Mr. and Mrs. Samples desired that the funds be invested to earn
interest income that would provide scholarship awards to graduating seniors to assist with post-high
school education (but not limited to) apprenticeships, technical college, community colleges, and
universities.
From the President…
It has been an honor to serve as President of the Foundation for the
past year. Working with a distinguished Board of Directors, we strive to
provide more opportunities and reach more students and teachers each
year. During the 2005-2006 school year, we met these goals.
The Foundation was asked to manage the generous gift received
from the Samples estate and provide funding for post secondary educational
opportunities. As the school year closed, we presented 12 scholarships of $3,000 each. These
scholarships, totaling $36,000, were evenly distributed with three scholarships going to students in each
of our four high schools.
The Foundation also funded 17 Creative Instructional Grants totaling $38,500 during this school
year. Compared to ten grants totaling $5,000 in 1999, I think you will agree that we have made great
progress in this area. We also gave $4,589 to support the three OM teams, two from Rural Point
Elementary School and one from Liberty Middle School. Again we met our goal of providing increased
opportunities for our students and teachers.
Hanover County residents and businesses continue to be generous with their contributions in supporting
the Foundation. Highlights from this year include a $20,000 donation from Grayson Johnson to
support Beaverdam and South Anna Elementary schools; the Bowl-A-Thon, in which all schools participated,
raising $18,000; and the Alumni Phone-A-Thon which raised over $21,000. In total, due to this
generosity, the Foundation was able to provide over $238,000 in funding for students and teachers.
The Foundation’s annual Celebration of Excellence in Education dinner was a resounding success.
This event allows Hanover County to provide an appropriate level of recognition to the “Teacher of the
Year” from each of our schools. Additionally, this event enables us to express our gratitude to these
educators who play an important role in shaping the future of Hanover County.
I would be remiss if I did not thank the four Directors who completed their terms with the
Foundation. These four members have served since the Foundation’s inception and are strong advocates
for education in Hanover County. Buddy Klotz, Bill Loughridge, Kara Majewski, and Ginger Stanley
thank you for your commitment and six years of service to the Foundation.
In closing, I will share a quote from the Irish poet William Butler Yeats. Mr. Yeats once said,
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” Thank you for supporting the Hanover
Education Foundation and allowing us to assist in the “lighting of fires” within the Hanover County
Public School system.
HEF Professional Development
Scholarship Recipient
The Hanover Education Foundation awarded
the 2006 Superintendent’s Professional Development
Scholarship to Teri Donnelly, a Math teacher
at John M. Gandy Elementary School. The presentation
was made on January 10 at the Hanover County
School Board meeting.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a
promising classroom teacher to support a significant
professional development opportunity. Teri Donnelly
has taught math in Hanover County Public Schools
for 24 years.
With the funds Ms. Donnelly is receiving from
the Superintendent’s Scholarship, she plans on
purchasing audio equipment needed to collect
qualitative data--conversations between teachers and
students, students and students, and teachers and
teachers in her role as math specialist/coach. The
data will be used by many teachers to direct math
instruction. Ms. Donnelly plans to write an article
to be published about the effectiveness of the math
specialist/coaching model of staff development.
The Superintendent’s Professional Development
Scholarship was initiated by the HEF in 1999 to
honor Dr. Stewart Roberson’s achievement as
Superintendent of the Year.
On December 11, 2005 Jason Mraz
partnered with the Hanover Education
Foundation, to give a benefit concert
for his alma mater’s choral music program.
Jason returned to his hometown of
Mechanicsville and Lee-Davis High School
for a day of rehearsal and one show,
dubbed “An Evening with Jason Mraz”.
Featured at the concert was a performance
of “Song for a Friend” that included students
from the Lee-Davis choral music
program. In May of 2005 Jason had visited
Lee-Davis to record “Song for A Friend”
with the students and it is included in the
singer-songwriters latest CD, Mr. A-Z.
HEF Alumni Phone-a-thon
Graduates, retired teachers and friends
of Hanover County Public Schools made calls
from the School Board office. Beginning April
24th and ending April 27th, these volunteers
really showed their school spirit and support as
they called their classmates and their students
from years gone by with friendly competition
between schools. Thanks to some of these
calls, class reunions are in the works and long
lost classmates were found.
The HEF would like to thank everyone for
their time in making these calls, and thanks
to them over $21,000 in pledges were raised.
Many thanks goes out to Hilda Kelly, the ongoing
HEF Marketing Committee Chairman, for all
her work on this project for the last six years.
As an alumni of Patrick Henry High School and
a retired school teacher, Mrs. Kelly has a strong
passion and commitment to all the students
and the teachers of Hanover. This has certainly
been reflected in her desire to make the alumni
phone-a-thon the best it can be and she has
done that again this year.
The HEF is also grateful to John Helm and
Mark Marino of Verizon Wireless for providing
the cell phones for this year's campaign. There
is no way that we could have done a phonea-thon
event without this support. Thanks
also to Dick Corrada with Paramount's Kings
Dominion who provided all the food and drinks
to the callers every night.
Beaverdam and South Anna Elementary Schools Benefit
On February 15, a ceremony was held to recognize and thank Grayson
Johnson, owner of Johnson Construction Company, for his generosity.
Mr. Johnson, a 1995 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, gave a
portion of the proceeds from the sale of a house in the Carrington Glen subdivision
to South Anna Elementary and Beaverdam Elementary through the Hanover Education
Foundation (HEF). Each school received $10,000 to be used for classroom grants
and activities.
Representatives from the Hanover County Board of Supervisors and the
Hanover County School Board joined Superintendent of Schools Stewart Roberson,
HEF president Ken Hein, other HEF directors, students, school leaders, parents
and friends at the celebration. Third grade students from Beaverdam Elementary
and kindergarten students from South Anna
Elementary entertained the group as they sang
the national anthem and “I Love My Country.”
The Patrick Henry High School Naval JROTC
Color Guard led the Pledge of Allegiance. As
a token of appreciation, the students and the
principals presented Mr. Johnson with clay
planters hand painted by the students and
“spirit” apparel from each school.
“We are very fortunate to have alumni in
Hanover that come back, maintain their
businesses here, and continue to support their school system in many ways,” said Margaret Hill, Hanover Education
Foundation Executive Director. “We sincerely appreciate this generous gift and Mr. Johnson’s commitment to and support
of Hanover County Public Schools.”
