populations as needed.
Discourage dumping <strong>of</strong> garden waste and cuttings. Many tropical species can reproduce
vegetatively and dumping <strong>of</strong> garden waste can spread <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> new areas.
Infrequent mowing or slashing may just spread weed species that reproduce vegetatively,
including Dissotis rotundifolia, Tradescantia spathacea, Tradescantia zebrina and Wedelia
trilobata.
Limit burning and extinguish wildfires promptly. Fire destroys many native species, which are
not well adapted <strong>to</strong> fire, and favors invasive species, many <strong>of</strong> which are fire-resistant, firepromoting
or are pioneer species that do well on burned sites. Burning favors invasive species
by reducing competition, exposing mineral soil and destroying organic matter, making it difficult
for native species <strong>to</strong> become re-established. Fire can promote <strong>the</strong> reproduction <strong>of</strong> fire-adapted
species, such as Acacia auriculiformis (earleaf acacia), Arundo donax (giant reed), Chromolaena
odorata (ngesngesil, chromolaena, Siam weed), Imperata cylindrica (kasoring, cogon grass),
Melaleuca quinquenervia (cajeput, paper bark tree), Melinis minutiflora (molasses grass),
Panicum maximum (Guinea grass) and Pennisetum polystachion (desum, mission grass).
Establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se species (and extirpation <strong>of</strong> native species) can fuel additional fires,
leading <strong>to</strong> a destructive fire cycle.
Disturbance, removal <strong>of</strong> competition and <strong>the</strong> exposure <strong>of</strong> mineral soil favor many invasive
species. Undisturbed ecosystems are much more resistant <strong>to</strong> invasion. Limiting roadbuilding,
